PINOCHLE (Dominos)
Hey there! Let me tell you about Pinochle, a really cool game played with dominos that involves tricks and strategy. It’s designed for three players, and the goal is to be the first one to score 250 points.
SETUP
So, at the beginning of each game, we need to decide who will be the dealer. It’s usually done randomly, and then the dealer will change with each new round. The dealer then shuffles the tiles and deals nine dominos to each player, three tiles at a time. After that, there will be one tile left, and we call that the widow.
Tile Rankings and Melds
Now, here’s where things get interesting. The tiles’ rank can change depending on whether we’re in the melding or trick-taking phase of the game. During the melding phase, the doubles of each suit can either be separated into their own suit or ranked within their suit in numerical order. If they’re in their own suit, they are ranked from [6,6] as the highest to [0,0] as the lowest.
When it comes to playing the game, the ranking system is pretty straightforward. Doubles are the highest-ranked tiles of their suit. To determine the suit of a tile, you look at the highest number on it. The other number tells you where that tile stands within the rank of the suit. Higher numbers mean higher ranks, with the double being the highest and the 0 being the lowest.
How the Game Works
The game is divided into two main phases: the melding phase and the trick-taking phase.
Melding Phase
When it’s time to combine our cards, the dealer will turn over and reveal the “widow.” They’ll let us know which suits are in the widow. If it’s a double tile, they’ll tell us which of the two suits it belongs to. Then, we’ll take turns showing our melds. To do this, we’ll put any melds we have face-up on the table. But remember, it’s up to each player to decide if they want to show all, some, or none of their melds. If you don’t have any melds or don’t want to show them, just say “no melds” when it’s your turn.
The widow is a set of cards that anyone can use to make melds with the cards in their hand. There are two types of melds we can make.
The first type is when we have three consecutive tiles of the same suit. They can be in order or we can use the widow as the third tile.
So, there’s this other way you can combine your tiles, it’s called a “meld”. See, a meld happens when you have three tiles that are all consecutive numbers and doubles. Pretty cool, huh? Now, if the widow (which is, you know, the extra tile in the middle) happens to be a double, you can use it as part of your meld. That means you only need two tiles from your hand to complete the meld. But if the widow isn’t a double, well, then you’ll need three tiles from your hand to make the meld.
Once everyone has played their melds, it’s time for some scoring. The dealer will pay each player based on the melds they made. How much they pay depends on the specific rules you’re playing with, but we’ll get into that later.
After the scoring, all the melds stay on the table for the next phase of the game. They kinda just hang out there, waiting for the next part to begin.
Now for the trick-taking part.
It’s time for the next phase of the game. The player to the left of the dealer goes first. They can lead with any tile they want to start the trick. After that, the next player has to play a tile of the same suit if they have one. The highest-ranked tile of the suit that was led wins the trick, and that player gets to lead the next one. It’s all about strategy and thinking ahead.
Oh, and the player who wins the very last trick? They also get a little something extra. They get to keep the widow and use it to score some points later on. Pretty neat, right?
Now let’s talk about scoring.
Once we’re done with the melding phase, the dealer hands out chips to each player based on the melds they made. It’s like a reward for their strategic moves and clever combinations.
Now, let’s talk about sequence melds. If a player manages to meld two tiles from their own hand along with a tile from the widow, they receive two chips. It’s a small victory that shows their skill and agility in the game.
But if a player goes one step further and melds three tiles from their hand, they are rewarded with three chips. It’s a recognition of their ability to identify and play multiple tiles that fit together perfectly.
However, if the three-tile meld also happens to be of the same suit as the widow, then the player is granted four chips. It’s like hitting the jackpot, as they’ve not only created a sequence but also matched it with the widow’s suit.
And if the meld consists of three tiles that not only match the widow’s suit but also continue the sequence, the player receives the ultimate reward – five chips. It’s a testament to their exceptional talent and shrewdness in building the sequence to its full potential.
When it comes to double melds, you have a few options. If you make a meld with two doubles from your hand and the widow, you’ll earn two chips. But if your meld is made up of three doubles from your hand, you’ll receive three chips. Now, if your meld consists of three doubles from your hand and one of them matches the suit of the widow, then you’ll get four chips. Finally, if your meld is made up of three doubles and the widow is also a double, you’ll earn five chips. It can be tricky, but the rewards are worth it!
In trick-taking, each trick you win earns you a chip. Additionally, you’ll earn five chips for every tile you win that adds up to five pips, such as [0,5], [4,1], or [2,3]. If you manage to win a tile that adds up to 10 pips, like [4,6] or [5,5], you’ll receive a whopping ten chips!
And that’s the end of the game!
When it comes to winning the game, the first person to reach 250 points is declared the winner. Here’s the thing – you can actually win during the melding phase! But what happens if two or more players tie during the melding phase? Well, then we move on to the trick-taking phase. And if you find yourself in a tie during the trick-taking phase, don’t worry! We just play an additional round to determine the ultimate winner.
