Welcome to the BuyWord Game!
I’m here to guide you through the rules and help you understand how to play this exciting word game. So let’s get started!
Objective:
The objective of BuyWord is to earn the most points by creating high-scoring words with the limited funds you have.
Game Components:
To play the game, you’ll need:
- A deck of letter cards
- Money cards with different denominations
- Timer
Gameplay:
The game consists of several rounds. In each round, you have a certain amount of money to spend on letter cards. The cost of each letter card is determined by its rank in the alphabet.
During your turn, you can either:
- Buy a letter card from the deck using your money
- Use the money cards you’ve earned to purchase letter cards
- Sell one of your existing words to gain funds
When buying a letter card, you need to consider its cost and its potential value in constructing high-scoring words.
When using money cards, each card has a specific value and can be combined to reach the price of a desired letter card.
You can also choose to sell one of your existing words for funds. However, the longer the word, the less money it will bring you.
The round ends when all letter cards are bought or there are no more legal words that can be formed. Then, players calculate their scores based on the words they’ve created and the money cards they have.
Scoring:
Your score is calculated by adding the points earned from your words and the value of your remaining money cards.
Each letter card has a point value based on its rank in the alphabet, and longer words earn bonus points. The value of the money cards is their face value.
Conclusion:
Now that you know the rules, you’re ready to start playing the BuyWord Game! Have fun strategizing and out-wording your opponents to become the ultimate word-wealthy champion!

So here’s how it goes: You need to spend money to buy some letters. Once you have them, try to form a word that you can sell and make a profit. The amount of money you make depends on how many letters there are and how good they are.
What You Need

When you’re ready to play the game, here’s what you’ll find inside the box:
– 108 Letter Tiles
– 9 Wild Tiles
– 4 Price Lists
– 1 Special Die
– Play Money
– Rules Manual
– Handy Carry Bag
– Instructions
I’ll explain how to set it up.
Alright, let’s get started. Take all the money out of the box and put it in a tidy stack in the middle of the table. Each of us will begin with $200 in different types of bills: 2 fifty-dollar bills, 3 twenty-dollar bills, 2 ten-dollar bills, 3 five-dollar bills, and 5 one-dollar bills. The rest of the bills will stay on the table and act as “the bank”.

Hey there! Let’s dive into the exciting world of Scrabble and learn how to play this fantastic game!
I’ll explain the first step to get you started. When you play Scrabble, you first need to take all the tiles out of the bag. Then, you’ll notice that there are some special tiles called “Wild” tiles, which can replace any letter in a word you want to create.

- So, if you’re playing BuyWord alone, you can take 8 of those letter tiles.
- If there are two players, each of you will take 4 wild tiles to start.
- In a three-player game, everyone takes 3 tiles, and if there are 4 players, each takes only 2.
Once you have all the letter tiles, put them back in the bag.
Now, let’s figure out who will be the Leader for the first round. You can decide this together.
Once that’s settled, it’s time to play the first round!
How to Play

Let’s get started! I’m the Leader for this round, so I’ll throw the die. By the way, the die will stay in front of me until the end of the round. At that point, I’ll pass it to the player on my left, and they’ll be the new Leader for the next round.
The number I roll on the die will determine how many tiles each player gets this round. If I roll “choice,” I’ll have to pick a number between 2 and 5.
First, I’ll take my turn and draw the number of tiles indicated by the roll. Then, we’ll go around the table, starting with me and moving left (clockwise), and each player will draw their tiles one by one.
We’ll keep selecting tiles like this until everyone has the number of tiles that the Leader rolled. It’s important to keep these tiles separate from any tiles you already have from previous rounds.
Just a heads up: If we run out of letter tiles before everyone gets the right number, we can’t buy any more, and those tiles are out of the game (Check out Buying Tiles, below!).
Get Your Tiles
Now it’s time to take a look at the letter tiles we each have.
Starting with me (the Leader), and going around in a circle, each of us has the chance to buy our letter tiles. The cost is based on how many spots, or pips, are on the tiles. We add up all the spots, and then multiply that total by itself. That gives us the price to pay.

I’ve got a handy price list here for those of you who are still getting the hang of your multiplication tables. If you decide to buy some letters, just let me know and pay the right amount to the bank. We don’t need to bother the other players with money transactions.
Now, if you don’t want to buy any letters or you simply don’t have enough money, no worries! Just put those tiles back in the box, and they won’t be in play anymore. But hey, there are some exceptions to this rule, so make sure to check out the Variations section!
When you do buy the letters, you can add them to any other letters you’ve already gathered in the previous rounds. So don’t worry about arranging them right away.
Example: I rolled a four on the special die. Now it’s time for us players to pick our tiles, starting with the leader and going left. I drew the letters E, E, J, and D.
Do you want to buy these letters? They’ll cost you $64 because there are 8 spots in total, and when you square that, you get 64. If you don’t want them, we’ll put them back in the box.

Selling Words: Unleashing the Power of Language
Hey there! Let’s talk about selling words – it’s like using magic to harness the power of language. But first, remember that no words are sold until all the tiles drawn this round have either been purchased or placed out of play. So, let’s dive in and explore the fascinating world of selling words.
Now, there are some rules we need to follow when it comes to the types of words that are acceptable. Generally, we don’t accept capitalized, hyphenated, or foreign words. It’s like having a secret code that only includes ordinary words. We want to keep things fair and square.
Once the purchasing phase ends, it’s your time to shine! You get to form a word or words to sell back to the bank. You can use any and all of the tiles you possess to create your masterpiece. And here’s the fun part – you can even use a single “Wild” tile as any letter you need! It’s like having a wildcard in your pocket.
Just remember, you can only use one “Wild” tile in a word. We don’t want to go overboard with the wildness. So, choose wisely and create something amazing.
Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty – how much are these words worth? Well, the value of a word is determined by counting the total number of spots (pips) on its letter tiles. Then, we take that value and square it, just like a math magician. The result is the amount of money you’ll receive from the bank when you sell your word.
All you have to do is simply declare that you’re selling a word, and voila – the money is yours! It’s like a treasure chest filled with gold waiting to be claimed.
So, my friend, go ahead and unleash the power of language. Form your words, sell them, and watch as the bank fills your pockets with riches. It’s time to put your word wizardry to the test!
I play a game called Scrabble, where I use letter tiles to create words. Once I use a tile, it goes back in the box and I can’t use it again. But there’s a rule that if I want to challenge someone’s word and I lose, I have to pay a $20 penalty.
Let me give you an example. The word “ENJOYED” has a total of 13 pips. To find out the value of this word, you just need to multiply the number of pips by itself. So in this case, 13 multiplied by 13 equals 169. You can also find the word values in the game’s price lists.

End of the Round
Let’s talk about what happens at the end of a round in the game. It’s important to keep track of how many tiles you have. You can’t have more than 8 tiles, not including “Wild” tiles. If you have more than 8, you have to get rid of some. You have a couple of choices: you can make another word and sell it to the bank, or you can just take the extra tiles and put them in the box.
Once everyone has made and sold their words, and all players have followed the 8 Tile limit, the round is over. The person to the left of the Leader gets the die and becomes the new Leader for the next round.
Game Over
Once the leader’s die has been rolled for the final round and all the remaining letter tiles have been drawn (which will typically be fewer in number), the game comes to a close.
At this point, all players can make use of any remaining words they’ve managed to form in order to earn some money. Any unused letter tiles can’t be carried forward and simply return to the box.
The player who has accumulated the most money emerges as the champion. In case you’re playing solo, an acceptable total of $800 indicates a fair game, reaching $900 is an achievement, while attaining $1000 is deemed exceptional.
