Hey there! Have you ever noticed the little word at the top right corner of each card? It’s called the “Buzzword,” and it holds the key to solving the clues. Let me show you with an example. Take a look at the clues and answers for the Buzzword “Tooth”:
Getting Started
Let’s set up and get ready to play! We’re going to divide into two teams. Each team gets to choose a cool name and write it in an oval on the Scoreboard. Make sure to keep the Scoreboard and Marker close by. We’ll need a damp tissue to wipe it off later.
Now, it’s time to shuffle the 5 scoring cards. Each team gets one card. The team with the highest number gets to go first. Don’t forget to put all the Scoring Cards faceup in a neat pile, starting with 1 on top.
Before we start the game, let’s place the card box nearby. The cards have different colors on each side. We’ll start with one color and then switch to the other to keep things interesting and avoid repeats.
Game Play
- Teams will take turns giving clues to the other team.
- When it’s your team’s turn, someone from the other team will choose a card from the box and tell you the Buzzword that’s written on it. This is your clue for the answers.
- The Timer is flipped, and the person with the card starts reading the clues in order from 1 to 5.
- You and your teammates all play together and say your answers out loud. If an answer is correct, the next clue is read.
- If your team can’t figure out the answer, you can skip to the next clue.
- Once you skip a clue, you won’t be able to go back to it.
- The game ends when the Timer runs out. Everyone on your team needs to be quiet, because the other team can steal any answers given after time is up.
The Other Team:
- While we’re guessing, your team has three important tasks: reading the clues, managing the Scoring Cards, and keeping an eye on the Timer.
- One of you will read the clues, just like I explained earlier.
- Another one of you will place all the Scoring Cards, with the numbers facing up, in a line on the table. Each card corresponds to a clue, starting with No. 1 for the first clue and so on. If we guess a clue correctly, the corresponding card is flipped over. But if we pass or run out of time, the card stays with the number facing up.
- One of you will keep track of the Timer and give a loud “Bzzzzzz!” when time runs out.
- Now it’s your turn! You have the opportunity to steal any clues that match the Scoring Cards that are still facing up with numbers.
- First, one player from a team draws a card and reads the category and word clues to the other players on their team.
- The same player from the opposing team now reads those clues to his or her teammates, who say their answers aloud.
Scoring
Each team scores 1 point for each correct answer given while either playing or stealing. Keep track on the Scoreboard.
End of the Game
The game ends when a team reaches 30 points and both teams have had an equal number of turns. The team with the highest score wins!
Alternate Game Play
For an easier version of the game, players may choose to turn the Timer over twice to double the amount of time available for answers.
For the youngest players or beginning readers, the game also may be played without the Timer.
In that case, players should decide on a reasonable length of time for the team to guess.
