Khanhoo game rules – how to play khanhoo

Welcome to Khanhoo!

Get ready to dive into the captivating world of Khanhoo, a game with a rich history dating all the way back to the 12th century. Over time, Sir William Henry Wilkinson introduced his own twist to the game, adapting it to the popular 52-card French deck that we know today. By combining and modifying two French decks, this timeless game has evolved to become an exciting modern-day version of Rummy.

The Cards and the Deal

Now, let’s set up the deck for a thrilling game of Khanhoo. All you need are two standard decks of cards and one Joker. To get started, remove the Spades Ace through 10 from both decks. Next, eliminate the Diamonds, Clubs, and Hearts 10’s through Kings from both decks as well.

After these steps, your customized Khanhoo deck will consist of two sets of Aces through 10’s in Diamonds, Clubs, and Hearts. Additionally, the deck will contain two sets of Jacks, Queens, and Kings in Spades. And don’t forget to add in the Joker, which serves as a wildcard and can represent any card you need in a meld.

To get started, let’s deal 15 cards to each player, making sure to distribute them one at a time and face down. The remaining cards will form a draw pile, which we’ll place in the center of the table.

Now, for each round, the dealing of the cards will alternate.

Here’s how the game is played:

THE FIRST TURN:

When it comes to the first turn, it’s the non-dealer who goes first. They will draw a card from the draw pile and then decide which card from their hand they want to discard, starting the discard pile.

CONTINUING PLAY:

After the first turn, things start to get more interesting. If a player decides to pick up the top card from the discard pile, they are required to play the meld to which that card belongs. On the other hand, if a player opts to draw the top card from the draw pile, they are not obligated to play any melds.

If we run out of cards in the draw pile, the next player will take the top card from the discard pile. Then, we’ll turn the rest of the discard pile face down to start a new draw pile. The card that was taken from the discard pile will be placed next to the draw pile. We will keep playing from there.

Now, let’s talk about ending the round. A round ends once a player has melded all the cards in their hand. This will be announced after the final discard. The player must discard their last card to complete the round.

Next, let’s discuss melds and scoring in Khanhoo. There are many types of melds in this game, and each has a specific point value. The first player to meld all their cards earns 5 points. Every player earns points based on the melds they have created.

Cards that are not part of a meld will be set aside during the scoring phase of the game.

Here is a table that shows the different types of melds and their respective point values:

| Meld Type | Description | Point Value |

|——————–|——————————————–|————-|

| Aces | Three Aces, two of the same suit | 1 point |

| Sequence | Three or more cards in the same suit in sequential order | 1 point |

| Triplet | Three cards of the same rank, all three different suits | 2 points |

| Double Triplet | Six cards of the same rank | 10 points |

| Courts | 1 Jack, 1 Queen, and 1 King of Spades | 3 points |

| Double Courts | 2 Jacks, 2 Queens, and 2 Kings of Spades | 10 points |

| Jacks Royal Group | Jack of Spades and both 7 of Diamonds | 4 points |

| Queen’s Royal Group| Queen of Spades and both 8 of Clubs | 4 points |

| King’s Royal Group | King of Spades and both 9 of Hearts | 4 points |

| Khanhoo | Ace of Hearts, 2 of Clubs, 3 of Diamonds | 5 points |

| Double Khanhoo | Both Ace of Hearts, both 2 of Clubs, and both 3 of Diamonds | 15 points |

These are the rules you need to know to play Khanhoo. Have fun and enjoy the game!
