Amazons – learn to play with

AMAZONS

Amazons is a board game created in Argentina in 1988 by Walter Zamkauskaus. It’s a game that you can play easily with things you already have at home. Even though mathematicians have studied Amazons, it’s a strategy game that anyone can enjoy, even if you’re not an expert.

In Amazons, you control a group of fierce Amazon warriors and your goal is to trap all your opponent’s pieces. To do this, you’ll move your warriors and shoot flaming arrows. But be careful! As more spots on the board catch fire, it becomes harder to move your warriors without getting trapped yourself. If your Amazons get trapped, you lose the game.

MATERIALS

When playing this game, you can choose to use different sizes of checkered grids. The larger the grid, the more challenging the game becomes as it requires incorporating more pieces.

Typically, a standard game is played on an 8×8 chess board. Each player will have three pawns, with one player using white pawns and the other using black pawns. As the game progresses, certain squares on the board will be considered “burnt” and cannot be moved through. To mark these squares, you can use checkers of any color.

SET UP

To set up the board, each player should place their pawns in their respective starting positions. For an 8×8 board, White’s starting pawns are placed on squares a3, d1, and h3. Black’s starting pawns are placed on squares a6, e8, and h6.

Alright, let’s get this game started! Once the board is all set up, we’re ready for action. Usually, white gets the first move, but there are other ways to decide who goes first.

THE PLAY

Each turn consists of two parts: moving and firing.

MOVEMENT

When it’s your turn, you’ve got to move one of your game pieces. They can go in a straight line in any direction across the board. You can move them as far as you want, but you can’t go through other game pieces or burnt spaces.

When I finish moving a piece to its new spot, I can then move on to the second part of my turn.

SHOOTING

Once I’ve moved a piece, it’s time to shoot a flaming arrow. I can shoot the arrow in a straight line, in any direction, for as many spaces as I want. But I can’t shoot through an opponent or a space that’s already burnt. I’ll need to mark the burnt space with a checker.

After I make my move and take my shot, my turn is finished. Now it’s your turn to play. We keep going like this until the game comes to an end.

VICTORY

I win when you can no longer move any of your pieces. Just like in this example, the white player wins because the black pieces can’t make any more moves.

I want to tell you about a game that people have been playing for a long time. It’s called checkers. Maybe you’ve heard of it before. Checkers is a fun and exciting game that you can play with a friend or family member. I’ll explain how it works.

Checkers is usually played on a square board that has 10 rows and 10 columns. That means there are 100 squares in total. Each player gets 4 game pieces, and they take turns moving their pieces on the board.

The goal of checkers is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them so they can’t move. You do this by “jumping” over your opponent’s piece to remove it from the board. But be careful, because your opponent can do the same thing to you!

Checkers is a game of strategy and thinking ahead. You have to plan your moves and anticipate what your opponent will do. It’s not just about luck – you have to use your brain to win!

Checkers is a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It’s a great way to spend time with friends and family, and it’s also a good way to keep your mind sharp.

So if you’re looking for a fun and challenging game to play, why not give checkers a try? I think you’ll enjoy it!
