Welcome to Teotihuacan: City of Gods Solo Rules!
In this guide, I will walk you through the solo variant of the wonderful board game Teotihuacan: City of Gods.
Teotihuacan: City of Gods is a game inspired by the ancient city of Teotihuacan in Mexico. It’s a game that combines strategy, resource management, and clever planning. The solo variant allows you to fully immerse yourself in the world of Teotihuacan and experience the game on your own. Are you ready to become the ruler of this ancient city?
Setting Up the Game
Before we dive into the rules, let’s first set up the game. Take the game board and place it in the center of your playing area. Make sure you have the player board, the pyramid tiles, the temple tiles, the Avenue tiles, the resource cubes, and the technology tiles nearby.
Next, shuffle the development tiles and place them face down in a stack. Draw three tiles and place them face up beside the stack. These will be the development tiles available for purchase. Also, shuffle the starting tiles and give one to each player including yourself. Each player will also receive a starting technology tile.
Finally, place the action cubes in a supply beside the board, and you’re ready to begin!
Playing the Game
The solo variant follows the same rules as the multiplayer version, with a few adjustments. The overall goal of the game remains the same: to collect resources, build temples and pyramids, and gain the favor of the gods. The main difference is that you will be controlling all the player characters.
At the beginning of each round, you will roll the action dice and distribute them as you wish among your player characters. Each action die represents a different action, such as moving, collecting resources, or building temples. Use your dice strategically to maximize your actions.
Throughout the game, you will need to manage your resources carefully. Resources such as jade, obsidian, and gold are needed to construct buildings and move up the Avenue track. Plan your actions wisely to ensure a steady supply of resources.
As you progress through the game, you will have the opportunity to advance on the technology track. Technology tiles provide valuable benefits and can give you an edge over your opponents. Choose your technology upgrades wisely to suit your play style.
Scoring and End Game
The game lasts for a set number of rounds, depending on the number of players. At the end of each round, you will calculate your score based on various factors, such as the number of buildings you have constructed, the level of your pyramid, and your progress on the Avenue track.
The player with the highest score at the end of the game is declared the winner. Can you achieve the highest score and become the ruler of Teotihuacan?
Conclusion
Playing Teotihuacan: City of Gods solo is a captivating experience that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the ancient world of the Teotihuacan civilization. By following the solo rules, you can challenge yourself and test your strategic skills as you navigate the city, gather resources, and build impressive structures. So, are you ready to embark on this solo adventure and become the ruler of Teotihuacan?

In the solo mode, you’ll be going up against a computer opponent called Teotibot, or “bot” for short. This bot will simulate a game with two players.
Now, here’s something to remember about the difficulty level: the rules, as they are, have been tested against experienced players, so they provide a challenge that you can beat. But if it’s your first game and you want a slightly easier time, you can make some adjustments to the difficulty. You’ll find a list of these adjustments at the end of the solo rules.
Let’s talk about some extra components you’ll need for the game. You’ll need 7 action tiles, like the ones shown in the picture below:

You’ll also need 2 direction tiles, like the ones shown in this picture:

When it comes to setting up the game, it’s pretty much the same as a regular 2-player game, with one small change. The bot starts with 2 gold, 2 stone, and 2 wood, but no cocoa.
I’m starting at the bottom of the Pyramid track, kinda like the beginning, but not quite. I’m also on the first step of the Avenue of the Dead track, not the lowest one though.
I kick things off by placing my marker on the top right Technology tile, you know, the one at the top of the green temple column. But here’s the twist, I don’t get an extra temple advancement.
Now, it’s time to put my workers on the Action Boards. Here’s where I’m gonna place them and what powers they have:
– Gold Deposits (4) Action Board (general area): power 2.
– Nobles (6) Action Board (general area): power 2.
– Construction (8) Action Board (general area): power 2.
– Decorations (7) Action Board (Worship space): power 1.
Next up, I grab 6 Action tiles randomly and use them to build my action pyramid. Oh, and don’t forget to keep the seventh tile nearby.
Hey there! Let me walk you through the setup for playing this game solo. First, let’s set up the Direction tiles. Take both of them and place them next to the action pyramid. Make sure to position them one below the other and randomly flip their sides.
Next, grab two dice in a color that wasn’t used during setup. These dice will be used by the bot to determine its actions during its turns. Place these dice near the bot’s action cards.
Now, it’s time to start the game! You will be the first player, which means you get 1 extra cocoa. Enjoy the advantage!
A Change to the General Rules
Here’s an important change for the solo mode of the game. If either you or the bot builds a Pyramid tile using the Construction (8) Action Board or a Decoration tile using the Decorations (7) Action Board, things work a bit differently. Instead of refilling the spot where the tile was placed, slide all the tiles to the left or up, and refill the rightmost or bottom space instead. It adds a twist to the game!
When you release the bot’s worker from a Worship space, instead of placing the worker on the general area of that Action Board, I’ll move it to the next empty Temple Worship space. We’ll skip the Palace (1) Action Board and go clockwise around the Action Board.
Don’t worry, the effect of the bot’s new placement won’t be carried out. But in the incredibly unlikely event that there are no empty Temple Worship spaces, I’ll immediately release your next (clockwise) worker that is locked onto a Temple Worship space.
Now, let’s talk about what happens on Teotibot’s turn:

First, I’ll roll the two neutral dice that haven’t been used yet. Then, I’ll add up the numbers on the dice. This will help me select a tile in the action pyramid. Here’s how it works:

Teotibot’s Actions
General Reminder
The bot doesn’t give me any money for doing things. It just collects cocoa, which I can exchange for victory points or masks.
If there are multiple workers to choose from, the bot will always power up the one with a higher power when a tile tells it to.
When a tile tells the bot to find its highest or lowest powered worker and there are workers with the same power, I can choose the one that is either furthest from or closest to the Palace on the Action Board, depending on what the tile says.
If a tile tells the bot to move a worker, it will move it clockwise to the next Action Board, but only if the worker has a power of 3 or less.
- If I have a power of 4 or 5, I will move clockwise to the second Action Board, skipping the nearest one.
- Regardless of my power, I will always skip the Palace (1) Action Board.
When a tile tells me to advance on a temple, I will move up on the temple where I am currently the highest. If there is a tie, I will choose the leftmost temple: blue, then red, then green.
After moving up on the blue temple, I will choose the resource that I have the least of as a reward. If there is a tie, I will prioritize taking gold before other resources, and taking stone before wood.
I will always select 5 Victory Points as the reward for Ascension, and I will advance on the Avenue of the Dead as usual.
Hey there! Have you ever wondered how the bot works in this game? Well, let me tell you! The bot doesn’t get any Discovery tiles like we do. It’s only interested in the printed rewards it can get when it reaches a major step on the temple. So, while we’re busy collecting those awesome Discovery tiles, the bot is focused on grabbing the main rewards.
Building

If I have two or more stones and at least one worker on the Construction (8) Action Board, I’ll spend two stones. Then, I’ll place a random pyramid tile, rotated in any direction, on the top left space available in the Pyramid grid of the Main Board. Here’s what happens next:
– I’ll score victory points for the level.
– I’ll move forward on the Pyramid track.
– I’ll score an extra two victory points and move forward by one on any temple. This represents the average points I would score by matching icons.
If the above step doesn’t work out, but I have at least one worker on the Stone Quarry (3) Action Board, I’ll gain two stones.
If I manage to perform either of the steps I mentioned earlier, the first thing I’ll do is power up a worker on the Action Board that is relevant to the task at hand. This might trigger an Ascension, which will be resolved just like any other Ascension. Once I’ve powered up the worker, I’ll advance them forward.
However, if neither of the previous steps are successful, things will go a little differently. In that case, the bot will gain 5 units of cocoa instead. Then, it will proceed to power up its lowest powered worker and advance them forward.
Let’s talk about decorations now. They play an important role in the game as well. When it comes to decorations, you should consider placing them in strategic locations on your board. They can provide you with various benefits, such as awarding you extra cocoa or allowing you to activate special abilities.
So, when you’re deciding where to place your decorations, keep in mind the advantages they offer. By strategically placing decorations, you can tailor your gameplay to your own unique style and reap the rewards.
Remember, the key to success in the game lies in making wise decisions and using your resources effectively. Good luck!

If I have 2 or more gold and one worker on the Decorations (7) Action Board, I’ll spend 2 gold to put the top Decoration tile on an available space in the Pyramid grid on the Main Board, starting from the top. After that, I:
– Get 5 Victory Points.
– Move forward on the Pyramid track.
– Move forward on any temple by one.
If the previous step didn’t work and I have a worker on the Gold Deposits (4) Action Board, I’ll gain 2 gold.
If either of the previous steps worked, I’ll power up a worker on the relevant Action Board. This might trigger an Ascension, which will be resolved normally. Then, I’ll move the powered-up worker (or the new worker if the old one triggered Ascension).
If I couldn’t complete either of the previous steps, I would gain 5 cocoa instead. I would then boost my weakest worker and move it forward. Convert the text into Alchemy.

When I have 1 or more gold and at least one worker on the Alchemy (5) Action Board, I can spend 1 gold to gain the Technology of the lowest number that doesn’t have any markers, whether they’re mine or the Teotibot’s. The Technology will be mine to use as an advantage.
But if all the remaining tiles already have my marker on them, then the Teotibot gains the lowest numbered Technology that it doesn’t have yet. Meanwhile, I get to score the usual 3 Victory Points. So there’s still a chance for me to benefit.
No matter what happens, I move ahead on the temple that matches the Technology I gained. This also allows me to power up one of my workers on this Action Board. It’s possible that this could trigger an Ascension, and everything will be resolved as usual.
Oh, and by the way, the Teotibot doesn’t get any benefits from Technology tiles. It’s just me who gets to enjoy that advantage.
Nobles

If I have 2 wood and one worker on the Nobles (6) Action Board, I will spend 2 wood to build a Building.
Before the first Eclipse, I will place it in the first (top) row. After the first Eclipse (but before the second), I will place it in the second (center) row. After the second Eclipse, I will place it in the third (bottom) row.
If a row is full, I will place it into a space with the lowest printed Victory Point value of all three rows. I will score the Victory Points shown on the space just covered and advance myself on the Avenue of the Dead, just like an actual player would.
But if I don’t have enough resources for that step, and I have at least one worker on the Forest (2) Action Board, I will gain 2 wood instead.
If I successfully complete either of the previous steps, I’ll activate a worker on the Action Board that corresponds to my move. This may cause Ascension, which will be resolved as usual. After that, I’ll move the activated worker forward.
If I fail to complete either of the previous steps, I’ll gain 5 cocoa instead. Then, I’ll power up my least powered worker and move it forward.
Now let’s talk about Mastery.

- First, I’ll identify the most powerful die that the bot has unlocked.
- If possible, I’ll perform the action corresponding to that die on the Action Board. Let’s see what each die allows:
- If the bot has unlocked the Forest die (power level 2), refer to step 2 of the Nobles action tile.
- If the bot has unlocked the Stone Quarry die (power level 3), refer to step 2 of the Construction action tile.
- If the bot has unlocked the Gold Deposits die (power level 4), refer to step 2 of the Decorations action tile.
- If the bot has unlocked the Alchemy die (power level 5), refer to step 1 of the Alchemy action tile.
- If the bot has unlocked the Nobles die (power level 6), refer to step 1 of the Nobles action tile.
- If the bot has unlocked the Decorations die (power level 7), refer to step 1 of the Decorations action tile.
- If the bot has unlocked the Construction die (power level 8), refer to step 1 of the Construction action tile.
If I manage to pull off a successful action, I’ll make sure to give that worker a power-up. This could lead to Ascension, which we’ll handle as usual. After that, I’ll move the powered-up worker forward, unless we have a new worker as a result of Ascension.
Now, in the rare instance that none of the workers are able to perform an action, I’ll get 5 cocoa and give a boost to my weakest worker. Then I’ll move it forward.
Let’s move on to Worship now.

- Move your bot’s worker to the next Worship space on the temple sidebar in a clockwise direction. Teotibot always ignores the Palace (1) Action Board.
- If you have a worker on that space, unlock it.
- The bot moves forward 2 spaces on the corresponding temple, gaining rewards for both and receiving printed bonuses instead of Discovery tiles.
- If the activated space is on the Decorations (7) Action Board, the bot moves forward 3 spaces on any temple instead.
- Remove the Discovery tile from the activated space and immediately draw a new one to replace it.
Collecting Masks

If I don’t have one of the masks available by one of the Worship actions, I’ll check the Palace (1) Action Board and the 4 temple bands. If I have enough money, I’ll pay the cost and immediately get that mask. I’ll draw a replacement right away and won’t move any dice. If there are multiple masks I can choose from, I’ll take the one with the lowest number first. If there are multiple masks with the same rarity, I’ll pick the first one in a clockwise direction, starting from the Palace (1) Action Board.
If I couldn’t get any masks in Step 1, I’ll get 5 cocoa instead. I’ll use that cocoa to power up my lowest powered worker, and then move it forward.
In the Eclipse expansion, I won’t have to pay a cocoa salary. I’ll still get points for masks and the Pyramid and Avenue of the Dead tracks as usual.
During the third Eclipse, I can earn more points. If I have any resources or cocoa left, I’ll get 1 Victory Point for each one. If I have a marker on any Technology tile, I’ll earn 2 Victory Points for each one. In addition, I’ll get a flat 15 Victory Points for each Temple Bonus tile that I’ve reached, instead of the normal scoring method.
If I want to adjust the difficulty of Teotibot, I have a few options. I can make the bot easier to beat by decreasing its starting unlocked workers’ power by up to 3 points. I can also decrease the bot’s starting resources by 1 gold, 1 wood, and 1 stone. Another option is to decrease the number of Victory Points I earn when I cash in 10 cocoa by 1 or 2 points. Finally, I can also increase the number of steps I take on a temple when I perform a Worship action by 1 point.
When playing the game, there are a few ways you can adjust the Victory Points for different aspects of the game. One option is to change the number of Victory Points awarded for Temple Bonus tiles by either adding or subtracting 5 or 10 points. Another option is to adjust the points earned for each Technology tile by adding or subtracting 1 or 2 points. These adjustments can be made to customize the game to your liking and to create a different level of challenge.
