Karuba Game Rules

Playing the game called Karuba can be a real adventure! I’ll guide you through the rules, so you can start having fun in no time.

First, let’s set up the game. You’ll need a game board and tiles, which represent different paths. Each player gets their own board and a set of temples. The goal is to connect pathways and reach the temples.

Now, it’s time to explore the jungle! Each turn, you’ll draw a tile and place it on your board. You can connect the paths to create a continuous network. Be careful, though! You can’t overlap or rotate the tiles.

As you lay down tiles, you’ll encounter treasures and adventurers. These will help you score points. But watch out for obstacles like mountains and water. They can block your path and make the game more challenging.

The game continues until all tiles are placed on the boards. Then, it’s time to tally up the points. You’ll score points for each adventurer that reaches a temple. The more adventurers you have on a temple, the more points you score.

Now that you know the rules, it’s time to start playing! Enjoy the excitement of Karuba and let your adventure unfold on the game board. Happy exploring!

Long ago, our boats set sail on a daring voyage to the island of Karuba. Now, we find ourselves here, ready to lead our own teams of adventurers through the thick jungle. Our goal? To reach the ancient temples and claim their treasures.

Don’t be fooled – this won’t be an easy task. The jungle is treacherous and full of secrets. We must be resourceful and clever to uncover hidden trails and navigate our way through. Time is of the essence, as only the fastest explorer will seize the most valuable treasures.

Be prepared for twisting paths and unexpected obstacles. Sometimes, the way forward may not be clear, and we’ll have to be patient and persistent to find the best route. But don’t lose hope – with determination, we will prevail.

A glimmer of gold catches our eye – a nugget to collect and cherish. And look, there are even shiny crystals scattered along the paths, waiting to be discovered. Each treasure we find brings us one step closer to victory.

What’s Inside

  • I have 4 islands.
  • There are 64 crystals worth 1 point each.
  • I found 12 gold nuggets worth 2 points each.
  • There are 16 temple treasures, each with varying point values (2, 3, 4, or 5 points) and colored brown, blue, purple, or yellow.
  • I have 16 adventurers, 4 each in the colors brown, blue, purple, and yellow.
  • I also have 16 temples, 4 each in the colors brown, blue, purple, and yellow.
  • I collected 144 jungle tiles, 36 of each color (red, gray, green, and light brown) and numbered from 1 to 36.

Here’s what the game is all about

Whoever has the most valuable treasures from the expedition wins!

Now let me explain how to set it up

You will need to choose an island and place it in front of you. Each player should have their own island. Additionally, each player will receive the following:

  • 4 adventurers, each in a different color
  • 4 temples, each in a different color
  • 36 jungle tiles with the same color on the other side (the colors don’t matter).

In front of each temple, you’ll find temple treasures equal to the number of players. Grab treasures based on the number of players with the following values:

  • For 2 players: You need treasures with values 5 and 3.
  • For 3 players: You need treasures with values 5, 3, and 2.
  • For 4 players: You need treasures with values 5, 4, 3, and 2.

To set up, make four face-up stacks for each color of treasure, with the highest value at the top. Place these stacks in the middle of the table. Put the remaining temple treasures away.

For a game with three players, use the treasure values 5, 3, and 2 for the brown, blue, yellow, and violet colors. Make four stacks, with the 2-point treasure at the bottom and the 5-point treasure at the top of each stack.

Put the crystals and gold nuggets in an accessible spot in the middle of the table.

Be an Adventurer and Explore the Temple

Before we start playing, let’s work together to decide where we want to put our adventurers and temples.

We need to make sure that every island has the adventurers and temples in the same spots. That means all the islands should look the same before we begin. You can place your adventurers on the numbers along the beach, and the temples on the numbers in the jungle.

Now it’s time for you to pick an adventurer and put it on any number along the beach. After that, you should place the temple of the same color on a number in the jungle. Just remember, there needs to be at least three numbers between your adventurer and the temple of the same color.

Once we’ve determined the starting player, we’re all ready to set up our adventurers and temples. We each choose our own color – in this case, blue – and place them on the corresponding numbered spaces. We do this simultaneously, so there’s an element of surprise and strategy.

I picked the blue color and decided to place my adventurer at 20 degrees on the beach. That seemed like a good spot to start exploring. My blue temple, on the other hand, found its place deep in the jungle, at 100 degrees. I wanted to make sure it was well-hidden and protected.

My fellow players, Miriam, Christina, and Luis, all chose blue as well. It was interesting to see their choices. Miriam and Christina also placed their adventurers on the beach at 20 degrees, just like me. Luis, however, had a different idea. He placed his adventurer at a different angle, adding a twist to the game.

We all placed our blue temples at 100 degrees in the jungle, just like I did. It’s fascinating how we all had different strategies but ended up in the same general area! Now that we’re all set up, it’s time to start exploring and see what secrets this island holds.

Hey there! Let me tell you a little story.

So, there were three of us: Miriam, Christina, and Luis. We all had our own adventurers and temples to place. Miriam had a yellow adventurer and a yellow temple. She put her adventurer at 90 degrees on the beach and her temple at 10 degrees in the jungle. And the rest of us did the same thing.

Now, Christina had a purple adventurer and a purple temple. She decided to place her adventurer at 110 degrees on the beach and her temple at 60 degrees in the jungle. And guess what? The rest of us followed suit.

Finally, it was Luis’s turn. He had a brown adventurer, which he placed at 60 degrees on the beach. And his brown temple? Well, he put that at 70 degrees in the jungle. And of course, the rest of us did the exact same thing.

After all that, we needed to choose a leader for our expedition. We decided to draw straws to decide. Anyone who drew the short straw would be the leader. And you know what? Luis ended up being our lucky leader!

As the leader, Luis shuffled his 36 jungle tiles really well and placed them face down in front of his island. Meanwhile, the rest of us sorted our 36 tiles according to the numbers and placed them face up around our islands.

And just like that, we were all ready for our exciting adventure!

Game Play

When we play the game, each of us has our own island card. The goal is to find the most valuable temple treasures before the others do. We use tiles to create paths that the adventurers can follow to reach the temples of the same color.

As the adventurers make their way, they can collect crystals and gold nuggets, which are also counted as treasures at the end of the game.

The expedition leader shows everyone the top tile from their pile and says the number on it loudly. At the same time, all the players search for that tile in their own pile.

Once we find the tile, we have two options for what to do with it (Options A & B explained below). After each player has made their choice, the expedition leader reveals another tile, and we continue.

A. Put the tile on the island

When playing this game, there are a few important rules to keep in mind. First, you can only place tiles on empty spaces on the island grid. Make sure that the number on the tile is in the top left corner when you place it.

It’s not necessary to connect the tiles to each other. You can place them anywhere on the grid. However, keep in mind that you can create paths by placing tiles without paths next to each other. These paths can lead to dead ends. (Take a look at the image for clarification.)

If you uncover a tile with a crystal or a gold nugget, everyone can choose one item from the middle of the table and put it on the tile. At the end of the game, you’ll earn points for the crystals and gold nuggets collected by your adventurers.

Tip: Always remember to double-check if an adventurer or a temple is accidentally blocked, as it could leave them stranded in a dead end.

B. Get Rid of a Tile and Move Your Adventurer

When you discard a tile, you have the opportunity to move one of your adventurers. This is how you can collect gold and crystals, and ultimately, reach the temple of the same color.

For each tile you discard, you can move an adventurer as many steps as there are paths leading to the edge of the discarded tile. Depending on the discarded tile, you can move them 2, 3, or 4 steps.

A step always means moving one tile forward, along the paths. Remember, adventurers can only move along these paths and cannot leap over other adventurers or obstacles. At intersections, adventurers have the freedom to turn in any direction they choose.

Please note that movement points cannot be distributed among multiple adventurers. You either use all the movement points for one adventurer, or you forfeit the unused points.

Hey there, I’ve got something interesting to tell you! This tile right here has not one, not two, but three paths that go all the way to the edge. And guess what? If you decide to discard it, you can actually move one of your adventurers up to three steps along any of those paths. How cool is that, right?

Find Gold Nuggets and Crystals

To get gold nuggets or crystals, you have to end your turn on the tile with them and give up any extra moves you have.

Take the treasure from the tile and put it on the adventurer’s picture on the left side of the map.

The crystals and gold nuggets stay there until the game is over and count as points in the final score. You don’t have to collect them if you don’t want to.

Getting to a Temple

So, you’re exploring a temple, huh? Let me break it down for you. Once you enter a temple – I mean, really step inside – you get to take the most valuable treasure of that temple’s color from the middle of the table. Pretty sweet deal, right? Oh, and you gotta stay at that temple until the game is over. No hopping around, buddy.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. If a bunch of players make it to the same color temple in one turn, they all get points. Everybody wins! Well, sort of. The player who got there first gets the best treasure, naturally. But the others aren’t left empty-handed. They get the less valuable treasures from the same stack. And, you know, they can make up for it by grabbing some crystals from the crystal stockpile.

Let me give you an example to make it crystal-clear. Let’s say our friend Luis makes it to the brown temple. He snags the brown treasure, which is worth a cool 5 points. Now, later on, Miriam and Christina also make it to the brown temple. They each get a piece of the action too, but it’s not as valuable. Don’t worry, though – they can make up for it with crystals.

I have just witnessed a thrilling turn of events in the game. Miriam, with her keen eyes and steady hand, has managed to snatch the treasure worth four points. Christina, not to be outdone, claims a valuable prize worth three points and, to add insult to injury, also takes an extra crystal from the stockpile. As a result of their successful ventures, both Miriam and Christina each earn four victory points for reaching the coveted brown temple.

End of the Game

Now, let me tell you how this exhilarating game comes to a close:

  • The expedition leader uncovers the last of the 36 jungle tiles, or
  • one player’s four adventurers have all reached their respective temples, whichever occurs first.

Now, pay close attention because here comes the moment of truth! The player with the most points, as you can see below, will emerge victorious and claim the ultimate triumph:

When you’re playing the game, it’s important to remember that any gold nuggets or crystals that are still on your island tiles don’t count towards victory points. So, if you want to win, you need to focus on other ways to score points.

If there’s a tie between players at the end of the game, the winner will be the one with the most jungle tiles on their island. It’s like a tiebreaker. But if there’s still a tie after that, then those players will be joint winners, sharing the victory.
