Setting Up the Game
- To start the game, press the Start/Stop button.
- Make sure both team scores are set to 0. If they’re not, hold down both the Team 1 Score and Team 2 Score buttons together to reset the scores.
- Select a category by pressing the Category button. Keep pressing it to cycle through the 7 options: Entertainment, Food, Places, Sports & Games, Sci-Tech, The World, and Everything.
By default, the game starts with the “Everything” category, which covers pretty much everything!
Playing the Game
Choosing Your Teams
- Let’s start by dividing everyone into two teams. It’s important to make sure that players from each team are sitting next to someone from the opposite team. This way, we can pass the Catch Phrase game unit quickly and efficiently.
- Now, let’s choose a team to go first. This will be Team 1. The first player from Team 1 will be the one who gets to hold the Catch Phrase game unit.
A Turn in the Game
When it’s time to play the game, we go through multiple rounds. I start by hitting the Start/Stop button, and that begins the timer. Then, a word from the category we picked will show up on the screen.
Your job is to help your team figure out that word. You can use gestures and give all sorts of clues to guide them towards the answer. But there are a few things you can’t do:
- You can’t say a word that sounds like the word you want them to guess;
- You can’t give them the first letter of the word;
- You can’t use any part of the word in your clue (like saying “shoe” for “shoe horn”).
If the other team catches you doing any of these things, you need to hit the Stop/Start button right away. The other team automatically scores a point for that round. (I’ll explain how we score points later).
Hey there! Once my team has guessed the word, I’ll pass the game unit to someone from the other team. Then it’s their turn to press the Next button and reveal the next word. The round will only end when the buzzer sounds and the timer runs out.
Let’s Talk Scoring
How We Score Points
As soon as the buzzer sounds, time’s up! The team that’s NOT holding the game unit gets 1 point. That team also gets one shot at guessing the word that the losing team couldn’t figure out.
If they guess it right, they’ll score an awesome BONUS point (that’s 2 points in total for the round).
Entering the Points
Before you can enter any points, you need to wait until the timer has run out or is stopped.
The team that didn’t do so well (the ones left holding the game unit when the round ended) can give 1 point to the winning team. They just need to press either the Team 1 Score or Team 2 Score button once.
So here’s the deal: if my team guesses the word, we can score an extra point! All we have to do is hit either the Team 1 Score or Team 2 Score button one more time. And get this – it gets even better: if we accidentally enter too many points, we can fix it! All you have to do is hold down both the Team 1 Score and Team 2 Score buttons to clear the score. Then, just follow the scoring rules and enter the correct scores. Easy peasy! We can keep playing the game right from where we left off. How cool is that?
Starting a New Round
Once I’ve finished scoring the points for the last round, it’s time to start a fresh round. To do that, all I need to do is press the button on the Catch Phrase game unit.
End of the Game
The team that manages to accumulate 7 points will be declared the winner! When the final point is earned, the game will celebrate with a catchy tune and display the name of the winning team.
If I want to continue playing, all I have to do is press and hold the Start/Stop button, and the scores will reset back to 0, allowing me to enjoy more rounds of excitement.
Other Things to Know
- I can always see the scores on the screen, so I’ll always know where each team stands.
- If I need to clear the team scores while the timer is not running, I simply press and hold both the Team 1 Score and Team 2 Score buttons simultaneously until the scores disappear.
- If the game hasn’t been used for 5 minutes, it will go to sleep. To wake it up and get back to the action, all I have to do is press the Start/Stop button, and the game will display the current word.
