Hey there! Let me walk you through some important info about playing the Tutorial. We’ll cover special abilities, taking damage, and more.
Abilities
Abilities can be found on a variety of cards and mission rules, like Hero sheets, Deployment cards, and Class cards.
Abilities are special skills that let you do things that go beyond the normal rules of the game. They give you extra powers and can help you in different situations. For example, an ability might let you attack one more time or let you do something that would normally be against the rules.
Some abilities have special symbols that mean different things. Here’s what they mean:
- : If you want to use this ability, you have to first lose some (called strain). The amount of strain you lose is written next to this symbol.
As an Imperial player, I need to spend a specific amount of threat before I can use an ability represented by the icon. Threat is a resource that I can use throughout the game to activate my powerful abilities. However, in the tutorial, we won’t be using threat. We’ll learn more about it later on.
Additionally, some abilities can be used as an action. This means that I can choose to activate them during my turn, giving me more control over when and how I use them. It’s important to remember these rules as they will shape my strategy and decision-making as an Imperial player.
When it comes to playing the game, it’s important to understand how certain abilities can be used. These abilities are known as “surge” abilities, and they can greatly impact your attacks. Surge abilities can be activated by spending surge results during an attack. The number of surges you can spend is equal to the number of surges rolled minus the number of evades rolled. It’s a double-edged sword, as using surge abilities can elevate your attacks, but you need to take into account the number of surges you have rolled.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that during an attack, you have the option to spend 1 surge to recover 1 endurance. This can be quite useful when you’re in need of some extra endurance.
Understanding surge and endurance is crucial when playing the game. By following these rules, you’ll have a better grasp of how to strategize your attacks and make the most out of your abilities. So, if you’re looking for an immersive gaming experience, remember to use surge abilities wisely and keep an eye on your endurance levels.
A Hero’s Endurance |
As a hero, I have the ability to push myself to the limit, but it comes at a cost. I can exhaust myself, taking on extra strain, to achieve extraordinary feats. This usually happens when I want to use my special abilities or move farther than usual.
Now, here’s the thing: I can choose to endure a certain amount of strain, but it can’t exceed my Endurance. It’s like a limit that I need to be aware of. If something happens in the game that would make me suffer more strain than my Endurance allows, I’ll still suffer that extra strain, but it will also hurt me. The amount of damage I’ll take is equal to the excess strain.
Going the Extra Mile
When you’re playing the game and controlling a hero character, you have the option to make a choice. At any time during your turn, you can choose to suffer in order to gain more movement. This means that your hero will take some damage, represented by the icon, but in return, you’ll be able to move your character further on the game board.
For each that you choose to suffer, you’ll gain one movement point. So, the more damage you take, the more movement points you’ll have to use. This can be a strategic decision that you’ll need to make based on the situation on the board and your overall strategy.
It’s important to note that only hero characters can suffer to gain movement points. This ability is unique to heroes and cannot be done by any other type of character in the game. And remember, you can only do this up to two times per turn.
Now, let’s talk about suffering and recovering. When you suffer , your hero takes damage, which can be a risky move. But don’t worry, there are ways for your hero to recover. You can use abilities, items, or other game mechanics to heal your hero and regain lost health. This will allow you to keep playing and continue on your mission.
So, the decision to suffer is a strategic one that you’ll need to consider carefully. It can give you the extra movement you need, but it comes with the risk of taking damage. And if you want to keep your hero in tip-top shape, you’ll need to find ways to recover and heal throughout the game.
Now that you understand the concept of suffering to gain movement points, you’ll be able to use this strategy to your advantage during the game. Good luck, and may the force be with you!
Suffering and Recovering
When a hero gets hurt (takes damage) or feels stressed (takes strain), they put the right number of tokens on their Hero sheet. For other characters, the tokens go on the map next to them.
Some game effects let a character get better (recover) from damage or strain.
When that happens, the character gets rid of some tokens. They can either take them off their Hero sheet or remove them from next to their base.
Note: If a hero recovers , and has more of these tokens than his strain, the hero recovers an amount equal to the excess .
Harm and Well-being
If I recover more than my strain tokens, I will gain that matches the excessive .
Have you ever wondered what happens when we take damage in a game? And how do we keep track of our health? Well, let’s dive in and see!
When I get too tired or overwhelmed, I collect strain tokens. These tokens represent the stress and weariness that I experience. When I recover, it’s important for me to pay attention to the number of strain tokens I have and how many I can actually recover. If I find that I have more strain tokens than my capacity to handle them, then something interesting happens.
In this case, the excess strain tokens don’t just disappear. They get translated into something positive – an equivalent amount of well-being! It’s like a bonus for pushing through the struggle!
Now, let’s break it down a bit. Imagine that I have 3 strain tokens, but I recover 5. Since 5 is greater than 3, I have excess strain tokens. According to the rule, I’ll regain well-being equal to the amount of excess strain tokens I have, which is 2 in this case.
This system works as a balancing act, a give and take. The more strain I accumulate, the more well-being I can potentially gain. It’s a double-edged sword, but it adds depth and strategy to the game.
So, whenever you find yourself in a similar situation, remember that exceeding your limits might have its perks – you’ll end up more rejuvenated than before! Embrace the challenge, and savor the rewards of perseverance.
And there you have it – a simple and effective way to interpret damage and well-being in your game. By understanding this concept, you’ll have a deeper grasp of the game mechanics and be better equipped to make strategic decisions. Happy gaming!
When you’re playing a game, attacks and abilities can be really powerful. They can hurt your characters and make them suffer damage. Just imagine, every time you get attacked, you lose some health points. It’s like getting a boo-boo, but a lot more serious!
Each character has a certain amount of health. When the damage you’ve suffered becomes equal to your health, that’s it, you’re defeated. It’s like losing all your energy and not being able to keep going. But here’s the thing, you can’t suffer more damage than you have health. So, let’s say you have 5 health points and you get hit for 7, you’ll only take 5 damage and ignore the extra 2. Kind of like a shield that protects you.
Damage Token |
Defeated
If your character has suffered damage equal to its health points, well, that’s bad news. It means you’re defeated. If you’re a hero, you become wounded, which means you’re hurt, but you can still keep playing. But if you’re any other character, you’re out of the game. That means you’re removed from the map and can’t participate anymore.
So, here’s the deal. When you’re playing this game and you manage to defeat the last figure in a group, something special happens. The corresponding Deployment card is sent back to the Imperial player’s hand. Keep that in mind as you strategize your moves.
What Happens When You Get Wounded
Let’s talk about what happens when you, as a hero, get defeated for the first time during a mission. It’s not the end of the world, don’t worry. You just have to discard all the damage tokens from your Hero sheet and flip it to the wounded side. It’s a chance for you to regroup and come back stronger. Don’t let it get you down!
When a Hero gets injured, their sheet changes. Some abilities may disappear, and stats can be altered. If there are too many strain tokens on a Hero’s sheet, they have to discard the extra ones.
A wounded Hero still follows the rules and can still get hurt. If a wounded Hero is defeated, they leave.
Leaving the Battle
When a Hero leaves, they take their figure off the map. They can’t do anything else and are out of the mission.
Moving Around
Usually, a figure can move to an adjacent space with one movement point. But sometimes, movement is restricted by terrain or enemies.
Getting Around on Different Terrain
When I’m playing on the game map, I come across different types of terrain. The different colors of lines around each space tell us what kind of terrain it is, and each type has its own effect on how we play:
Walls
Walls are marked by a black line, usually found on the edge of map tiles. When I see a wall, I know that it separates two spaces and makes them not adjacent to each other. This means that figures cannot move through walls or see what’s on the other side.
Wall |
Impassable Terrain
Impassable terrain is indicated by a dotted red line between spaces on the map. When I see this kind of line, I know that figures can’t move through it. However, unlike walls, impassable terrain doesn’t separate spaces. Two spaces across impassable terrain are still adjacent, and figures can see what’s on the other side. So, while we can’t move through it, we can at least see through it!
Impassable Terrain |
Can’t Go Through
If a space is surrounded by a solid red border, I can’t move there or see across it.
Blocked Terrain |
Doors
Hard to Move Through
If a space has a solid blue border, I need to use an extra movement point to get through it.
Difficult Terrain |
Going Around Figures
When you play the game, moving your figure around the board is an important part of your strategy. There are some rules you need to keep in mind when it comes to moving your figure.
First, you can move your figure into a space that is already occupied by one of your friendly figures or a neutral figure without any extra cost. It’s like you’re joining forces and working together!
However, if you want to move your figure into a space that is occupied by an enemy figure, things get a bit trickier. You can still do it, but you will have to spend one extra movement point to make it happen. It’s a small price to pay to get into the enemy’s territory!
One thing you need to remember is that you can never end your movement in a space that already has another figure in it. You don’t want to accidentally bump into someone and cause a figure pile-up!
Now let’s talk about keywords, which can give your figure some special abilities.
Keywords are like shortcuts that represent certain abilities. In the game tutorial, you will come across some common keywords:
- Blast – This keyword allows your figure to deal damage to multiple enemies at once, kind of like an explosion!
- Cleave – With this keyword, your figure can slice through multiple enemies with a single strike, just like a mighty warrior!
- Pierce – This tricky keyword helps your figure to bypass the enemy’s armor and deal damage directly, like a sharp arrow!
- Recover – If your figure is injured, this keyword allows it to regain some health and get back into the fight!
- Reach – With this keyword, your figure can attack enemies that are further away, extending its reach like a long spear!
If you want more information about these keywords and their effects, you can check the Rules Reference Guide or the included Reference card. There are also other keywords like “Bleed,” “Stun,” and “Focus” that relate to special conditions. But for now, let’s focus on the basic abilities without getting too complicated.
Now that you have a good understanding of moving your figure and the power of keywords, you’re ready to jump into the game and experience the excitement for yourself!
