Instead of playing with regular playing cards like we do today, they used “domino cards.” Moving ahead, card playing was also popular among the Egyptians in the 12th and 13th centuries. But if we were to trace back the ancient origins of poker, we would have to look towards Persia and a game called As-Nas.

As-Nas was believed to be created in the 16th century and had a significant influence on the development of poker. It consisted of 25 cards and involved placing bets during different rounds. The game also had a hierarchy of hand rankings, much like modern poker. This similarity was later documented in 1937 by R. F. Foster in his book “Foster’s Complete Hoyle,” where he states that Americans were definitely playing a version of As-Nas. However, there was a difference in the number of cards used. American poker at the time used 20 cards, which made it more closely resemble the ancient game.
