Let me tell you, the trickiest part of this game is figuring out which industries to build and where to put them. Once you get the hang of that, everything else falls into place pretty easily. I’ll be honest with you, I wish there was a magic solution to make the rules crystal clear, but unfortunately, I haven’t found one yet. The real challenge is that you have a lot to consider when you’re deciding where to build.

When you’re playing the game, it’s important to choose the right card that will allow you to build where you want to. To do this, you need to make sure that the symbols on the card, the counter, and the space are all the same. Location cards are easier to use than Industry cards because you only need to connect to one of your other counters with your own canal or rail links. But here’s where things get really confusing – sometimes you need coal to build, and sometimes you don’t. Coal has to be shipped along canals or rails, so you have to plan ahead.

A good starting strategy is to build industries that don’t need coal, just to get the hang of how everything works. You don’t have to worry about needing iron to build, since it doesn’t require canals or rails to move it to the final destination.

When you start playing the game, don’t try to do too much at once. Keep things simple. Your first move should be to either build a cotton mill or a port. If you decide to build a cotton mill, try to build it close to Manchester. If you choose to build a port, Liverpool or Preston would be good places to start.

To build a cotton mill, you have two options. You can play a Location card and build in that location, or you can use an Industry card. If you use an Industry card, you can build in any location that has a cotton mill symbol, since you don’t have any other counters on the map yet.

Once you have a counter on the map, it’s a good idea to build a canal from it. Canals give you more flexibility in using your Industry cards. They also earn you a decent amount of victory points.

Once you get the hang of creating industries that don’t rely on coal, you can move on to building ones that do. But before you do that, you need to plan carefully and make sure you have access to a source of coal. Ideally, it would be great to have your own source, but it’s not a requirement. It’s always beneficial to be located near a port or some external location because this gives you the option to purchase coal from the Coal Demand track.

When it comes to cotton mills, it’s important to have a connection to a port. Having your own ports is the ideal situation because you can sell your cotton directly to them when you’re ready to sell.

The more cotton you can sell at one time, the better. It’s more efficient to use your limited actions to sell a larger quantity. But be careful not to wait too long to sell, or you may find that there’s no market for your cotton. It’s a good idea to start making money early on so that you have the option to take a loan without going into negative income.

Cotton mills are definitely more profitable than ports. Ports are cheap to build and don’t require coal or iron, but they are not the most crucial industry to focus on. It’s a good idea to have ports as part of your portfolio, but they shouldn’t be your main priority.

If you’re running a few cotton mills and ports, you might want to think about getting into the iron business. It’s a good idea to start building an iron works when you’ve already taken a few cubes from the Iron Demand track. This way, you can get some of the building costs back right away and get closer to flipping your iron works to its other side.

Coal isn’t in high demand during the Canal Period, but it becomes extremely important once the Rail Period begins. Make sure you end the Canal Period with at least one coal mine that already has coal on it (and make sure it won’t disappear at the end of the period). This mine will serve as the hub for expanding your rail network in the Rail Period.

When it comes to shipyards, they can be a real game-changer in terms of victory points. But boy, oh boy, are they expensive. They’ll cost you a pretty penny in both money and development actions. Now, don’t get me wrong, you can still win the game without them. It’s just that if nobody else is building shipyards, they can be a pretty sweet investment.

When you play the game, you’ll need to do some development. It’s important to make sure that when the Rail Period begins, you have the freedom to build without too many limitations. It’s a good idea to have a few Tech Level 2 industries on the board by the end of the Canal Period because these will serve as central points for expanding during the Rail Period. Remember, during this period, you’re allowed to have more than one counter in a single location. However, the main challenge you’ll face when it comes to building is obtaining coal. It would be beneficial to be near an external location or port so that you can access coal from the Coal Demand track.

Why are these cards even in the game if they only impact one of our possible actions? It’s a good question, and there’s no simple answer. I’ve found that the game just works better with them, rather than without them. Even though the cards restrict where we can build, we can still overcome those limitations with careful planning. It’s important to study our hand at the start of the game and see if we have a group of locations that are close together.

Having counters close to each other is generally beneficial because it makes it easier to create an efficient canal or rail network. We can use the cards as a strategic tool. However, we need to be cautious when using cards for other actions. We should try to use cards that have no impact on our overall strategy.
