Spit/Speed

Hey there! If you love playing card games like Snap and Old Maid, then you’re in for a treat with Spit, also known as Speed. It’s a super exciting game that will definitely get your heart racing!

Here’s how to play: first, we need to shuffle the cards and make sure each player has an equal number – 26 cards each, to be exact.

Next, everyone sets up their stockpiles in a row. Each player has five piles, with the first pile having 1 card, the second pile having 2 cards, and so on, until the fifth pile has five cards. You can choose to place the cards face-down and flip them or deal them face-up. Your call!

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. You have 11 secret cards, called spit cards. Keep them hidden from everyone, even yourself! These will be your secret weapon during the game.

Here’s how the stockpiles are arranged:

  • Stack 1: 0 cards face down, 1 card face up
  • Stack 2: 1 card face down, 1 card face up
  • Stack 3: 2 cards face down, 1 card face up
  • Stack 4: 3 cards face down, 1 card face up
  • Stack 5: 4 cards face down, 1 card face up

THE PLAY

When I’m ready, I yell “spit!” and flip the top card in my spit pile. Both players do this simultaneously. The first cards we flip go side by side between our stockpiles and become our spit piles. We play as fast as possible, trying to empty all the cards from our stockpiles into our spit piles. With one hand, we can play one card at a time and:

I’ll walk you through how to play Spit! or Speed, a fast-paced card game for two players. The objective of the game is to get rid of all of your cards. Here’s how it works:

    1. Set up the game:

    – Each player starts with a stockpile of cards. You can use a standard deck of 52 playing cards.

    – Deal each player 15 cards, creating two stockpiles. These stockpiles will be the foundation for the game.

    2. Play the game:

    – The game is played simultaneously by both players.

    – The goal is to play your cards onto the spit pile in the middle of the playing area.

    – Each player takes the top card from their stockpile and places it face-up on the spit pile.

    – The card played must be one rank higher or lower than the top card on the spit pile. For example, if the top card is a 5, you can play a 4 or a 6.

    – Cards “turn corner,” meaning you can play an Ace on a King, or a 2 on an Ace.

    – Keep playing cards onto the spit pile as fast as you can, trying to create a sequence of cards.

    3. Stockpile management:

    – If one or more of your stockpiles has the top card face-down, you can turn it face-up and use it.

    – You can also move a face-up card from the top of a stockpile to an empty space. However, you cannot exceed five stockpiles.

    4. The race to play:

    – The game continues until one player runs out of cards in their stockpile.

    – Once you have played all your stockpile cards, you can start playing cards from your hand.

    – The player who runs out of cards first wins the game.

    5. What if you can’t play?

    – If both players reach a point where they can no longer play on their spit pile, they both shout “spit!”

    – Flip a spit card from the top of your stockpile and place it on top of your spit pile.

    – Play continues if possible. If both players are still unable to play, repeat the process until someone can play a card.

Remember, once you play a card, you cannot retract it. The game requires quick thinking and fast reflexes. Enjoy the excitement and try to outplay your opponent in this thrilling card game!

If there’s a deadlock and one player has run out of spit cards, they have to spit on only one pile. They can’t spit on any other pile anymore.

    Time for a New Layout

A new layout is required in the following situations:

    1. A player manages to get rid of all the cards in their stockpile
    2. There’s a deadlock and both players have run out of spit cards, but they still have stockpiles left.

So here’s what happens: if this thing goes down, we start smacking the cards like crazy. The smart ones among us aim for the pile with fewer cards. But if we both go for the same pile, the player whose hand is below gets it, and the other player grabs the rest. Then we add the cards we snagged to the pile, mix it up, and deal out a brand-new setup. Once we’re both set, we shout “spit!” and keep on playing.

Now, if one of us has less than 15 cards, things get a little simpler. We won’t have enough cards for a full load or an extra pile. There’ll just be one pile we’ll both go after.

    END

If you have only one pile of cards in the center, the player who plays all their stockpile cards first does not get any cards from the center. Instead, the other player collects the pile in the center along with all the unused stockpile cards. The player who plays all their cards from their pile and layout wins the game.

    VARIATIONS

    • In some games, only four stockpiles are used.
    • In some versions, the player who gets rid of all their cards in their layout gets to choose which pile in the center they want, and there is no slapping involved.
    • There is also a variation where the cards played on the center pile must alternate in colors.

    SPEED

In the game of Speed, each player keeps no more than five cards in their hand, which they keep secret from their opponent. They also have a stockpile from which they can draw cards. Players can play cards on the face-up piles in the center after a card has been played, and then draw a new one. To begin the game, place 10 cards face-down on each end and two cards in the middle. These cards should remain face-down until both players have received their cards and are ready to play. Each player is dealt 15 cards. In some versions, only 5 cards are used for the side piles, and each player receives 20 cards. After drawing five cards from your stockpile, both players flip over one of the single cards in the center of the layout. From the five cards in your hand, try to play them on the piles in the center. You can play a card if it is either one higher or one lower in rank than the card that was previously played. If you run out of plays to make and have fewer than five cards in your hand, draw cards from your stockpile and continue playing. If both players reach a point where they cannot make a play, even with five cards in hand, take one card from the side piles and place it face-up on the pile in the center. Keep doing this until one player is able to make a play. If the side piles run out, take the cards from the pile in the center (except for the top card), shuffle them, and create new side piles. Once a player has played all the cards in their hand and stockpile, they have won the game! If you decide to keep score, the winner receives one point for each card left in their opponent’s stockpile. Set a target score to determine when the game ends.
