Welcome to Petrone’s Black Mariah
Discovering Petrone’s Black Mariah
Hey there! I’m excited to tell you about Petrone’s Black Mariah, a fantastic trick-taking game created by Ren Petrone. This awesome game is actually based on the Black Maria variation of Hearts. But here’s the twist: Hearts become the trump suit and don’t cost you any points! The goal is pretty simple –capture as many clean tricks as you can. Just remember, stay away from the Ace, King, and Queen of Spades!
The Cards and Dealing Process
Okay, let’s talk about the cards and how the game begins. Petrone’s Black Mariah uses a regular deck of 52 cards. Before we start, be sure to give the deck a good shuffle. Once that’s done, it’s time to deal! Each player gets a hand of 13 cards, with one card being dealt to each player at a time. Once you’ve looked at your hand, the fun begins! Pick three cards that you want to get rid of and pass them to the player sitting on your right. Now, here’s the catch – you can’t peek at the cards they give you until you’ve passed your own three cards. And guess what? This passing to the right thing? It happens every single round!
Let’s Get Playing!
When we play this card game, the person to the left of the dealer starts the game by playing a card from their hand. Everyone else has to follow suit if they can, but if not, they can play any card they want. The highest card of the same suit as the one that started the round, or the highest Heart card, wins the trick. The person who wins the trick then leads the next one.
We keep playing like this until we have gone through all the tricks.
Now let’s talk about scoring. You earn points for capturing “clean tricks.” These are tricks that don’t have the Queen, King, or Ace of Spades. Each clean trick gives you 3 points.
But be careful! If you capture the Queen, King, or Ace of Spades, you will lose points. For capturing the Ace of Spades, you lose 7 points. For the King of Spades, you lose 10 points. And for the Queen of Spades, you lose a hefty 13 points.
The goal is to score as many points as possible and try to avoid those negative points from the Spades. Good luck!
Did you know that the game ends when a player reaches -50 points? It’s true! And if that happens, the player with the highest score actually wins. It’s a bit unusual, but that’s how it goes.
Now, let’s talk about winning the game. The first player to reach 50 points is the winner. Simple, right? But what if more than one player crosses 50 points at the same time? Well, in that case, the player with the higher score takes the victory. It’s all about who’s got the most points in the end.
But what if you’re still tied after all that? Don’t worry, you can continue playing to break the tie. Keep going until someone finally comes out on top. It’s all about that final push to secure the win.
So, remember, the game can end when someone reaches -50 points. And in that case, the player with the highest score is the one who takes home the victory. But if you’ve got a tie, don’t fret – keep playing until someone emerges as the ultimate winner. Good luck!
