Briscola – learn to play with

BRISCOLA

Hey there! Let’s talk about Briscola, a fun card game where the goal is to beat your opponent and earn points. To win, you need to reach 61 points in a two-player game. You can do this by winning tricks during the game and adding up the values of the cards you’ve won.

SETUP

Before we start, if you’re not using an Italian deck, you’ll have to remove all the 10s, 9s, and 8s from the regular 52-card deck. Once that’s done, the dealer shuffles the deck and gives each player three cards. Then, they flip another card and place it face-up on the table. This card is called the Briscola, and it becomes the trump suit for the rest of the game. The remaining deck is placed face-down next to the Briscola card.

Card Ranking and Values

Now, let’s talk about the cards in the game. Each card has a value and a ranking.

When it comes to card games, it’s important to understand the rankings and values of the cards. Let me break it down for you:

The cards are ranked in the following order: Ace (the highest), 3, King, Queen, Jack, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2.

Now, let’s talk about the value of each card:

The Ace has a point value of 11.

The Three has a point value of 10.

The King has a point value of 4.

The Queen has a point value of 3.

The Jack has a point value of 2.

All the other cards don’t have any point value.

GAMEPLAY

Are you ready to play? Let’s get into the rules!

These rules are specifically for 2-player games. If you’re playing with more players, check out the VARIATIONS section for the specific rules.

When it’s time to play cards, the person to the right of the dealer goes first. They pick one of their cards and put it face-up on the table. Then it’s the next player’s turn to do the same. Since there are only two players, one of three things can happen. First, the second player might play a card of the same suit as the first player. In this case, the player with the higher-ranking card wins the round. Second, the second player might play a card of a different suit, and neither card is the special Briscola card. Even in this case, the first player still wins the round, no matter the rank of the second card. Third, the second player might play a card of a different suit than the first player, but one of the cards is the Briscola card. In this situation, the player who played the Briscola card wins the round.

Once the round is finished, the winner of the round gets to draw a card from the deck that hasn’t been used yet. Then the loser of the round also gets a chance to draw a card. The winner will also be the one to start the next round.

When I finish playing a round of Briscola, there’s a special rule that comes into play. Unlike other trick-taking games, the second player doesn’t have to follow the same suit as the first player. They can play any card they want, without any restrictions.

As the game goes on, eventually all the cards will be played and the deck will be empty. When it’s time to draw cards again, but there are no more cards in the deck, the loser will have to draw the face-up Briscola card.

Each player will continue playing until they have no more cards left in their hand. At the end of the game, the players will gather the cards they’ve won. The values assigned to each card will be used to determine the scores. The player with the higher score wins, unless both players have a total of 60 points, in which case the game ends in a draw.

Are you interested in variations of the Briscola game? There are different versions of the game that you can try out to add some excitement and variety to your gameplay.

When playing games with more than two players, we have to make some adjustments. If there are four or six players, we form teams. In a 4-player game, two teams of 2 are created, and the game is played as usual. In a 6-player game, two teams of 3 are formed, and the game remains the same.

When there are 4 players, teammates sit opposite each other. In a 6-player game, teams also sit across from each other.

For three-player games, the mechanics are almost the same, except that we remove one 2-card from the deck. This means we will be playing with a 39-card deck. Each player still aims to score the highest amount.

For five-player games, we have different rules. Please refer to the rules for Briscola Chiamata.
