When I’m trying to figure something out in a game, there’s often a test that I need to pass. The test is resolved by rolling dice, which determines whether I succeed or fail. Passing a test usually helps me, while failing can have some negative consequences.

To resolve a test, I roll a number of dice based on my skill level in that particular area. I also need to consider any additional effects that might affect my skill. At the very least, I always get to roll one die.

If I roll a 5 or a 6 on at least one of the dice, I pass the test. But if I don’t roll any 5s or 6s, I fail. The number of successes I roll is called the test result.

When I pass or fail a test, I follow the instructions that come with the effect or consequence that matches my result.

Hey there! Let’s talk about Asset cards and how they work in the game. I’d like to give you an example so that you can understand it better.

Meet Lily Chen, she has an “Arcane Tome” Asset card. This card lets her do something special when she performs a Rest action. She can test her Lore skill to try and gain a Spell.

Now, when Lily decides to rest, she needs to see if she can pass this test. She uses her Lore skill, which has a value of 2. To see if she passes, she rolls 2 dice.

In this particular rest, Lily rolls the dice and gets a “1” and a “3”. Unfortunately, neither of these numbers are a “5” or a “6”, which means she fails the test. Because she didn’t roll a “5” or a “6”, she doesn’t gain a Spell.

There you have it, a simple example of how an Asset card works in the game. It’s all about testing your skills and seeing if you can succeed. Keep playing, and you’ll get the hang of it in no time!

When it comes to investigating, I can only use one card effect that boosts my skills for each test. For example, if I have an Asset that says “Gain +1,” that’s the bonus I’ll use. It’s important to keep in mind that if I have multiple effects that give me bonuses, I’ll only use the highest one.

Tests are often mentioned on cards with a skill icon in parentheses and a short description. Whenever I come across an effect that includes a skill icon, I have to immediately test that skill. Sometimes, the test declaration might also have a modifier like “-1,” which affects the number of dice I roll for the test.

It’s worth noting that most of the terms used in gameplay are capitalized on the cards to distinguish them from the narrative text.

Now, let’s talk about rerolling dice.

When you roll dice during a test, you have the option to spend a Clue token to reroll one die. You can do this multiple times, but each time you reroll, you need to spend a Clue token. It’s important to note that you determine whether you passed or failed the test after resolving all rerolls.

What are Skills?

On the bottom of your Investigator sheet, you’ll find five different skills listed. Each skill has a number below it, which represents the number of dice you roll when you need to resolve a test.

Improvement Tokens

When it comes to my training, I have these tokens that represent my skills. They help me become better at certain things. If I have a chance to improve a skill, I get an Improvement token with a matching icon. I place it beneath my Investigator sheet with the “+1” side facing up.

If I improve that skill again, I flip the token to the “+2” side. My skill level is determined by the number printed on my sheet plus the value of the matching Improvement token.

Challenging Adventures

There are these cards called Expedition Encounters, Other World Encounters, and Special Encounters. They offer rewarding but risky adventures known as complex encounters. Each card has three effects. To deal with these encounters, I first tackle the initial effect found at the top of the card. Depending on what happens, I then address one of the other two effects.

When I take a test, I have to decide what to do based on the result. If I pass the test, I do one thing. If I fail the test, I do something else. Whatever the result, I have to follow the instructions on the card. Sometimes, there may be more tests to complete before I can finish the effect. Finally, once I’m done, I have to get rid of the card.

You know when you come across an Other World Encounter card and it tells you to “close this Gate”? Well, what that means is that you get rid of the Gate token from where you are. Pretty straightforward, right? And hey, here’s something interesting. After you finish dealing with an Expedition Encounter, you move the Active Expedition token to the space that matches the card you just revealed from the top of the Expedition Encounter deck. Simple as that!
