Well, in Toshi Ranbo, the Imperial City, Empress Iweko I wants to bring some joy back after a series of tragic events. So, she’s announcing the gempukku of her youngest child, Iweko Miaka. The goal of the game is to be the first player to successfully complete Iweko Miaka’s gempukku ceremony.

Imagine you’re a samurai in the Imperial City of Rokugan, vying for the attention of the prestigious Imperial princess, Miaka. Every samurai is desperate for a chance to win her hand in marriage, as it would be a great honor.

However, Miaka rarely leaves her private quarters in the Imperial Palace, and when she does appear in public, she is always accompanied by guards, handmaidens, and spiritual advisors. Having a face-to-face meeting with her is nearly impossible. So to make your intentions known, you must rely on your political influence to find someone who can deliver your love letter to her.

Each player in the game holds a secret card representing the person who is currently carrying their love letter for Miaka. Your goal is to ensure that this person is closest to Miaka at the end of the day, so your love letter will reach her first.

How to Play

In the game Love Letter, we get to experience the journey of wooing Iweko Miaka through a series of rounds that represent different days. At the end of each round, Iweko Miaka reads one player’s letter and becomes more intrigued.

As the game progresses, one lucky suitor will capture Iweko Miaka’s heart and win the game. In order to make this happen, each player takes turns and starts by drawing a card from the deck and adding it to their hand.

Once you have the new card in your hand, you must choose one of the two cards and discard it face up in front of you. Don’t worry, the discarded card still has an effect that you must apply, even if it doesn’t benefit you.

If you’re ever unsure about how a specific card works, simply refer to the instructions. They have all the information you need to navigate any special cases.

When you discard a card, make sure to keep it in front of you, arranging them in order to show which ones you discarded first. This way, everyone can keep track of what cards you might still have.

After you use a card’s effect, it’s time to pass the turn to the player on your left.

Being Out of the Round

If you’re knocked out of the round, you have to reveal the card in your hand by placing it face up. Don’t worry, its effect won’t be applied, and you won’t get any more turns until the next round starts.

A Word about Honesty

It’s possible for someone to cheat by not discarding the Sensei card when they have the Manipulator or Hatamoto in their hand. This kind of behavior isn’t fair and doesn’t belong in a fun and light game like this. So, it’s best to play with honest people who respect the rules.

End of the Round

When a turn ends and there are no more cards left in the deck, a round comes to a close. This happens at the same time the Imperial residence closes for the night, and the person closest to Iweko Miaka brings her a love letter. Then, Iweko Miaka retreats to her chambers to read it.

At the end of the round, all the players show the cards they have in their hands. The player with the highest-ranking person on their card wins the round. If there is a tie, the player who discarded cards with the highest total value emerges as the winner.

In addition, if all players except one have been eliminated from the round, then the remaining player automatically wins.

The winner of the round earns a token of affection. All 16 cards are shuffled together, and the next round begins, following the setup rules. The winner of the previous round goes first, as the princess speaks kindly of him or her during breakfast.

End of the game

Let’s talk about winning the game. You win by getting a certain number of tokens of affection. The number of tokens you need to win depends on how many people are playing. If there are two players, you need 7 tokens to win. If there are three players, you only need 5 tokens. And if there are four players, you need 4 tokens.

The People

Now, let me introduce you to the people you’ll encounter in the game. Here are some quick profiles of them.

8: Iweko Miaka, Princess

If you throw away the Princess, no matter how or why, even if it’s just to the Hatamoto, she tosses your letter into the fire. You’re out of the round.

7: Togashi Gozato, Sensei

I’m here to tell you about a unique card called Togashi Gozato, Sensei. Unlike other cards that do their thing when you throw them away, this one works its magic while it’s still in your hand. Yep, you heard that right.

Now, here’s a little twist. If you happen to have both the Manipulator and the Hatamoto cards in your hand along with the Sensei, you gotta get rid of the Sensei. No need to spill the beans about what the other card is. And hey, even if you don’t have the Manipulator or the Hatamoto, you can still toss the Sensei. He’s quite a tricky one, that Sensei.

6: Doji Takato, The Deceptive Mastermind

When I decide to get rid of Doji Takato, I’ll have a sneaky plan up my sleeve. I’ll swap the card I’m holding with another player’s card of my choice. But there are a few rules I need to follow.

First, I can only trade with a player who is still in the game. If someone has already been eliminated, they’re off-limits. There’s no point in making deals with a ghost, after all.

Second, I can’t trade with someone who is protected by the Shugenja. This mystical guardian shields certain players from my manipulations, so I’ll need to choose someone else.

But here’s the twist – if every other player left in the game is under the Shugenja’s protection, my plan doesn’t work. It’s as if they have an invisible shield, and my tricks won’t have any effect.

So, when I have Doji Takato in my hands, I have to strategize and choose the perfect target, someone who is vulnerable and open to my deceit. I can’t afford to make a mistake. It’s all about timing and finding the right opportunity to make my move.

Card Ability: Matsu Misato, Hatamoto

When I get rid of Matsu Misato, I get to choose one player who is still playing the game, and that includes me. The player I choose has to throw away their cards and pick new ones, but without using their special powers if they have any, except for the Princess. If there are no more cards left in the deck, that player gets the card that was taken out at the beginning of the game instead.

If all the other players are being protected by the Shugenja, then I have to choose myself.

4: Isawa Tenkawa, Shugenja

When I get rid of the Shugenja card, I become untouchable by the effects of other players’ cards until my next turn. It’s like I have a force field around me! But here’s the twist: if everyone else is also protected by a Shugenja, and it’s my turn to use a card with an effect, I have to choose myself if I can.

Kaiu Akemi, the Diplomat:

Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome card called Kaiu Akemi, the Diplomat. When you decide to get rid of this card, something interesting happens. You get to choose another player who is still in the game, and then you both secretly compare your hands. Here comes the exciting part – the player with the lower rank is knocked out! Pretty cool, right?

But what happens if you both have the same rank? Well, in that case, nothing happens. It’s like a draw. Now, here’s where things get really interesting. If all the other players who are still in the game are protected by the Shugenja, then this card does absolutely nothing. It’s like it loses all its power!

Card Spotlight: Shosuro Yamazaki, Courtier

When I discard Shosuro Yamazaki, the Courtier, I get a glimpse into another player’s hand. I don’t reveal this information to everyone, though. Watch out, because if all the remaining players in the round are protected by the Shugenja, this card won’t have any effect.

1: Seppun Tasuke, Guard

Hey there! Let’s talk about Seppun Tasuke, the Guard. When you play this card, you can choose another player and guess a card they might have. If your guess is correct and they do have that card, they’re out of the game. But here’s the catch: if the Shugenja is protecting all the other players, then this Guard card won’t do a thing. It’s like trying to sneak up on a ninja!
