Here’s how it goes:

1. First things first, we need to separate the female cards from the male cards. Give each pile a good shuffle and put them next to the game board. Both teams pick a game piece and place it on the starting space.

I’m going to show you how to play a fun game called Women vs. Men Alias. Here’s how it works:

1. The first team takes turns deciding who will be the explainer and who will be the guessers. The explainer will pick up a stack of word cards that belong to their team.

2. The explainer’s job is to give clues to their teammates without saying the actual word on the card. They can use words that are related or similar to clue their team in.

3. The rest of the team, the guessers, will try to figure out what word the explainer is describing based on the clues given. They can ask questions to help narrow down their guesses.

4. Once the guessers think they know the word, they can make a guess. If they’re correct, they earn a point for their team. If they’re incorrect, the other team gets a chance to steal the point.

5. The game continues with each team taking turns as the explainer while the other team guesses. The team with the most points at the end wins the game.

When we play the game, men use the “male cards” and women use the “female cards”. Each card has a number from 1 to 8. You should check the number on the space where your game piece is standing, and then explain the word on the card with the same number. Start the sand timer and begin explaining (see Explaining). Every time our team guesses a word correctly, you, as the explainer, will place the card on the table and move on to explaining a new word with the same number from the next card.

Let’s talk about an exciting game called “Guess the Word”! It’s a game where you have to use your guessing skills and teamwork to win. Here are the rules:

• The game is played with a timer. One player from each team will take turns explaining words to their teammates within a certain timeframe.
• While the player is explaining, the other teams can also try to guess the word. The team that guesses correctly and the fastest gets to move their game piece ahead on the game board.
• When all the words have been guessed, it’s time to tally up the score. Count all the words the team guessed correctly, but also count the mistakes and skipped words. For each mistake or skipped card, the team will have to move a step backwards. These are known as “Minus Points.”
• Now it’s the next team’s turn to play. The player who explained the last word should place the used cards at the bottom of the deck so the game can continue.

The Game of Explanation

When my team plays this game, we find all kinds of words on the cards – nouns, verbs, adjectives, and more. It’s unpredictable which ones we’ll have to explain, and some are easier or harder depending on the number.

But here’s the thing: I can’t use any part of the word itself when I’m explaining it. I can’t even use a word that sounds similar. For example, if the word is “shoestring,” I can’t simply say “the stringy thing you put on your footwear.” No, instead, I have to get creative and say something like “the things you tie when you put on your footwear.”

It becomes even trickier with words like “banker.” I can’t just say “someone who works in a bank” because “bank” and “banker” have the same root. So, I have to think of something else that conveys the same idea.

Now, compounds are a little different. If the word I’m explaining is “dogcatcher,” the guesser might quickly catch onto the right track with “animal catcher.” See, sometimes it’s about finding those little hints that get you halfway there!

When I’m playing a word-guessing game, there’s a cool strategy I can use if I only know half of the compound word. Let’s say the word is “catcher” and I know the first part but not the second. I can use the first part as a clue to help me figure out the rest. And if I accidentally say any part of the compound while guessing, the other player can use it too.

These rules also apply to phrases made up of two or more words. I can use opposites to help explain a word. For example, if the word is “big,” I could say “the opposite of small” to give a hint.

But here’s an important thing to remember: we can’t use words from another language unless everyone playing agrees.

Minus Points

Here’s a tip to keep in mind: be careful! If the explaining player accidentally says any part of the word, their team has to go back a step on the game board.

If you spot a really hard word, you have the option to skip it. But keep in mind that skipping a word means you’ll move backwards on the game board. It might be worth it, though, especially if you’re stuck on a tricky one.

As you’re giving clues, keep the skipped cards in a separate pile. This will make scoring easier later. For example, if your team guessed seven words right but skipped two cards and made one mistake, you can move your game piece forward by four steps on the board (7-1-2=4).

But who would do such a thing? Who could possibly have an interest in stealing our words? Well, it turns out that there are actually quite a few culprits. Social media, for one, has played a significant role in the theft. With its relentless pursuit of brevity and convenience, social media has stripped our words down to their bare bones, reducing them to mere shadows of their former selves.

But it doesn’t stop there. Our fast-paced, technology-driven world also plays a part. We live in an age of instant gratification, where speed and efficiency are prized above all else. And unfortunately, it seems that our language has become a casualty of this need for speed.

So why should we care about the disappearance of our words? Well, for one, words have power. They have the ability to shape our thoughts, our beliefs, and our actions. They connect us to one another and help us understand the world around us.

Imagine a world without words like “kindness” or “compassion.” What would that look like? How would we express our emotions or convey our deepest thoughts? The loss of these words would leave a hole in our language, one that would be difficult to fill.

But perhaps even more concerning is the fact that the theft of our words represents a loss of individuality. When we lose our words, we lose a part of ourselves. We lose the ability to express our unique perspectives and experiences. We become a society that is homogenized and devoid of diversity.

So what can we do to reclaim our words? How can we prevent them from being stolen in the first place? The answer lies in awareness and intentionality. We must be mindful of the words we use and the impact they have. We must cultivate a love for language and a desire to preserve and protect it.

It won’t be easy, and we may never fully eradicate word theft. But by valuing and cherishing our words, we can protect them from disappearing. So next time you open your mouth to speak or sit down to write, remember the power of your words. They are yours and yours alone, and no one can take them away from you.

If a game piece lands on a special space, the team will need to take a “They’re stealing our words” turn on their next turn. This means that:

• The explainer will pick up 5 cards of the opposite color they’ve been using.
• No sand timer is used!
• The opposing team will attempt to guess the words first.
• Once either team guesses the word correctly, the explainer moves on to the next word.
• After the fifth word is correctly guessed, both teams will advance their pawns on the board.

This turn happens regardless of whether the pawn ended up on the stealing space. It’s the other team’s responsibility to make the most of the stealing opportunity.

At the end of each regular turn, the other teams also have the chance to steal the last word if it’s not guessed by the time the clock runs out.
