  • I have 45 playing cards and they represent different countries.
  • I also have 4 kingdom boards which consist of two parts.
  • Lastly, I have 36 counters which represent farmers.

The Goal of the Game

I want to build a strong and prosperous kingdom. To do that, I need to expand my territories by acquiring more countries. However, the key to a successful kingdom lies in having well-maintained countries with dedicated farmers.

After playing 4 games, the player with the highest number of points will be declared the winner.

Setting Up

I will choose a dealer who will shuffle the country cards. Then, they will deal 10 cards to each player. The number of players can be 2, 3, or 4.

The remaining cards will not be used in the first game. Each player will receive a two-part kingdom board. They will need to connect the parts and place it on the table as shown:

Alright, let’s get this card game started! The player on the left of the dealer gets things rolling by playing the very first country card.

Your Turn

Now it’s your turn! Take a country card from your hand and play it. Remember, we’re going clockwise, so each player will play a card of the same color. If you don’t have a card in that color, you can play one of a different color, but only if you don’t have a card in the matching color.

The player who plays the highest card in the round gets to scoop up all the other cards. But here’s the catch: if there happens to be more than one card with the highest value, the player who followed suit wins. And if no one followed suit, then the player who played the highest value card first takes the win (check out examples C & D to see how it works).

Once a round is won, the winner gets to proudly display their cards face up on their kingdom board. Arrange them from left to right and sort them by color (just like example A). If you don’t have any cards on your kingdom board yet, you can sort your winning cards in any order you like.

Hint: When playing, make sure to prioritize placing the card with the highest value on top. However, if you already have cards on your kingdom board, you must place the new cards on top of the country cards of the same color. Once the cards are in their designated spots and the next round begins, you cannot move them anymore.

Remember: Only the cards on top of your kingdom board will earn you points at the end of the game. The winner of the previous round gets to start the next one.

Example A

Hey there! Let me tell you a cool story about a card game. So, there are four players – Richard, Susan, Frank, and Lucy. Richard starts the game by playing a red 3 card. Then, Susan, who doesn’t have any red cards, plays a blue 5. After that, Frank plays a red 6, and Lucy plays a red 4. Exciting, right?

Guess what? Frank wins the round! He’s the champion! He proudly places his cards on the kingdom board like this:

Farmers

Okay, now let’s talk about farmers. They’re really important because they make countries fertile and ensure there’s enough food for everyone. When a player wins a round, they receive a certain number of farmer counters based on the winning card.

In this case, Frank’s red 6 card shows one farmer symbol. So, he gets one farmer counter. But where does he put it? Well, on the kingdom board, of course! The first two spots on the board already have “free” farmers, so Frank has to place his in the first available spot from left to right. In this situation, that’s the first empty spot on the third place on his kingdom board.

Hey there! I want to make sure you know something important. If, by the end of the game, you have a country card on a spot on the kingdom board but there are no farmers there, that card won’t score any points for you. In fact, you’ll get 5 penalty points for each missing farmer. Take a look at examples B and F.

On the other hand, it’s possible that a spot on the kingdom board has the right number of farmers on it but no country cards. In that situation, you’ll score the number of points indicated on the spot on the kingdom board. You can see an example of this in G.

Country cards with values 1 and 2

Did you know that there are special cards in this game called “1” and “2”? These cards have some unique rules. Let me explain.

If you play a “1” card and lose the round, you can still win a farmer if the card you played matches the color of the winner’s card. Check out example B for a better understanding.

But here’s the interesting part: if you lose a round and played a “1” card that doesn’t match the color of the winner’s card, you actually get two farmers! Example C shows you how this works.

Now, there’s one important rule: always follow suit if you can. So, if you play a “2” card and end up losing the round, you’ll only get a farmer if the color of your “2” card doesn’t match the color of the winner’s card. Examples D and E demonstrate this rule.

Now, let’s talk about the country cards with a value of “o”.

I want to talk about a really important topic today – the future of some countries. It’s a fascinating subject that I think we should all take the time to consider. So let’s dive in and explore!

Now, I know it may seem strange to think that there are countries with no future, but it’s a sad reality. There are several factors that contribute to this situation, and it’s essential that we understand them.

One key factor is the lack of resources. Some countries have limited access to essential resources like water, food, and energy. Without these basic necessities, it becomes nearly impossible for a country to thrive and build a sustainable future.

Another factor is political instability. When a country is constantly plagued by conflicts and unrest, it becomes challenging to establish stability and create a prosperous future. It’s like trying to build a sandcastle while the waves keep crashing against it.

Furthermore, economic challenges play a significant role. If a country is unable to develop a strong and diverse economy, it will struggle to provide its citizens with opportunities and a decent standard of living. This can lead to a stagnation that inhibits growth and progress.

But it’s not all doom and gloom! There are steps that can be taken to address these issues and help countries with no future. Aid organizations, governments, and individuals can come together to provide assistance, resources, and support. By working together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for everyone.

In conclusion, it’s important to understand the challenges faced by countries with no future and to recognize that we can all play a part in finding solutions. Let’s keep this topic in mind and continue to learn and grow!

Remember, even small actions can have a big impact.

Let’s keep the game going! I’ll start because I won the last round. I play a blue 8. Lucy doesn’t have any blue cards, so she plays a green 6. Richard plays a blue 1. Susan is in the same boat as Lucy and plays a red 0. Looks like I’ve won again!

I stack the two blue cards on top of the previous one, which was a blue 5. Naturally, I place the 8 on top. I take the green 6 and put it in the third spot on my kingdom board. As for the red 0, I have to put it on top of the other red cards. Richard played a 1 of the same color as the winner, so he gets a farmer. Here’s how my kingdom board looks now.

Now I have a total of 3 points, calculated as follows: o + 8 – 5 = 3. If you want more details on this calculation, take a look at example F.

Now let’s talk about special rounds. Here’s an example of one:

Example C:

So, here’s what went down: Frank played a blue 3. Susan, on the other hand, didn’t have any blue cards, so she decided to go with a green 7. And guess what? Richard was in the same boat as Susan. No blues for him either, so he played a red 1.

Now, here comes Mary, swooping in with a blue 7. And let me tell you, Mary is our winner for this round. Why, you ask? Well, it’s because blue is the color we’re all following. So Mary proudly places her 2 blue cards, the green card, and the red card on her kingdom board. And as a bonus, since her winning card had a farmer on it, she gets 1 farmer for herself. Richard, on the other hand, didn’t match the color with his 1 card, so he ends up with 2 farmers.

Example D:

So, here’s what happened. Frank played a blue 2, Susan played a green 8, Richard played a red 2, and Mary played a red 8. We were all trying to get rid of our blue cards, but it was Susan who managed to play an 8 that didn’t match the starting player’s color. And that’s why she won!

After winning, Susan proudly placed her 2 red cards, green card, and blue card on her kingdom board. But Richard and Frank weren’t so lucky. Since they played cards that didn’t match the winner’s color, they each had to give up 1 farmer. Tough break, guys!

So here’s what happened: Frank played a blue 7, Susan played a green 2, and Richard played a green 8. Mary decided to join in and played a blue 2. Richard ended up winning because he played the card with the highest value, which was the green 8. He proudly added the 2 blue cards and the 2 green cards to his kingdom board.

But the game wasn’t just about winning. There were consequences for the other players. Mary played a blue 2 that didn’t match the color of the winner’s card, so she earned 1 farmer. Susan, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky. She played a green 2 that matched the color of the winner’s card, so she didn’t get any farmers.

Let’s Score!

Now, let’s talk about scoring. Once all the players have played their country cards, it’s time to tally up the points:

  • Each player adds up the values of the countries at the top of their kingdom board that have enough farmers. Sadly, any countries without enough farmers don’t count towards the score.
  • If you don’t have enough farmers in your kingdom board’s countries, you’ll be penalized 5 points for each missing farmer.
  • If you have no countries on your kingdom board but enough farmers, you can still earn points based on your kingdom board’s values. For example, if the fourth spot on your kingdom board has no countries but enough farmers, you can add 3 points to your score.
Here’s an example:

Let’s say I didn’t win any more rounds and didn’t receive any more farmers, ending up with the same result as Example B. I add up the points from my countries: 0+8=8 points.

However, I can’t include the 6 green points because the third spot on my kingdom board doesn’t have enough farmers. Since I’m missing one farmer to keep the country, I receive a penalty of 5 points. So my final score is 8 – 5 = 3 points.

Another example:

So I just finished playing this game, and let me tell you how it went:

First, I added up all the points on the top country cards. I had enough farmers on three of them, so that gave me 8+6+2=16 points. But here’s the interesting part: on my kingdom board, the fourth place had enough farmers but no countries. That meant I got an extra 3 points, as it said on that place. So my total score was 16 + 3 = 19 points. Not bad, right?

Now, let’s talk about the end of the game

After each game, we wrote down everyone’s scores and started a new one. We played a total of 4 games, and guess what? The player with the highest total score was the winner. So it’s all about getting as many points as you can!
