In 31 BC, he takes full control. The Senate then grants him the title of Princeps senatus in 28 BC, making him the first member of the Senate to speak on a particular subject. In 27 BC, he receives the title of Augustus, which means his words are like prophecies.

At the age of 36, Augustus becomes the very first Roman Emperor and divides the Empire into different regions. You are now the legati Augusti, representatives of Augustus, and your duty is to maintain the current institutions in the Empire’s provinces.

Being really ambitious, you’ve got your heart set on becoming Consul. That’s the highest title in the land, and it’s awarded each year by the Senate. But here’s the tricky part – you’ve got to gain the support of the most influential senators and take control of provinces to build up your wealth. Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. When the game kicks off, you’ll have three objectives to conquer and seven legions at your disposal. Pay attention, because there are two types of objectives you need to focus on. First, you’ve got the provinces – these are key territories you’ll need to control. Second, there are the senators – these influential individuals can make or break your chances of success. Remember, you’ve got to play it smart and strike a balance between both.

Hey there! Let’s talk about town criers and mobilization tokens. So, here’s the deal: a town crier picks one of the 23 mobilization tokens from a bag. Once they’ve got it, they make sure everyone knows what it is by saying it out loud. Then, they place the token on the table.

• Legions in the game can be activated using tokens.
• There are six categories of legions, and each token can activate one of them.
• If you have a “joker” token, you can activate any legion you want.

4. Hey there! Depending on which tokens you draw, you can move your legions around to accomplish your goals.

Your goal: Try to get as many points as you can, and do it as fast as possible. The game ends when a player has control of seven objectives at the end of a turn.

5. And when you complete an objective, you proudly shout out AVE CESAR.

If multiple players complete an objective in the same round, each player says the number of their objective. The player with the lowest number goes first. You take your legions back, use any powers you gained from completing the objective, and put it to the side in your area of controlled objectives. I start with seven armies. The rest are set aside for now.

Goals

There are five goals placed in the center of the table. I randomly choose six and keep three in front of me, discarding the other three.

The remaining goals are placed face down to create a deck.

For the first game, I receive three random goals and place them in front of me.

Conquering an Objective

Alright, let’s get this game started! The oldest player will be the town crier. They grab the bag, pull out a token, and announce what it is to everyone. Then they place the token face up on the table.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. All the players, including the town crier, can put one of their legions on an objective. It has to be a spot that matches the category of the token that was drawn. You have two options:

• You can take a legion from your stash and place it on an objective.
• Or, if you already have a legion on the board, you can move it to a different objective. It doesn’t matter if it was on a different category or another objective. This can be really helpful if you want to complete an objective!

Remember, you can only place or move one legion for each token that’s drawn from the bag. So make your choices wisely!

How to finish an objective

An objective is finished when all of its spaces are filled with soldiers. You then shout “AVE CESAR”.

Here’s what you do next:

1. I take all my legions away from the objective and put them back into my collection.
2. I use as much power as I can from the objective.
3. I move the objective into my area so that it shows that I control it.
4. If I can and want to, I claim a reward. (Check out the rewards!) For example, I take the wheat reward and put it in front of me.
5. I pick a new objective from the five available and put it in front of me. I take the first objective from the deck to make sure there are still five available.

• Or, you can be patient and wait until you control more objectives. The downside? Someone else might snatch that reward you’re dreaming of. Decisions, decisions…

Note: You can’t lose a color or number of objectives reward. Even if you lose one of the objectives later, you still get to keep the reward.

C. Controlling Gold and Wheat Resources

When playing the game, the first person to control an objective that produces gold and/or wheat will automatically receive a reward. As long as they have more objectives producing these resources than anyone else, they get to keep the reward.

However, if another player manages to control the same number of resources, they have to give up one of their resources to that player.

Ending the Game

The game comes to an end when a player successfully controls seven objectives at the end of a round.

If multiple players complete an objective in the same round, they follow the same five steps as usual.

Afterwards, each player adds up their points using the scorepad in the following way:

1. Tally up the points earned from rewards.
2. Calculate the points shown on controlled objectives.
3. Add up the points earned from powers.
4. Combine all the points to get the final score.

When you play this game, the ultimate goal is to be the player with the most points. Whoever achieves this feat becomes the winner and earns the prestigious title of Consul.

However, there may be situations where two or more players end up with the same number of points. In such cases, the tiebreaker rule comes into play. The winner will then be determined by considering the number of senators controlled by each player. The player who has sway over the greatest number of senators will emerge victorious, breaking the tie and claiming the well-deserved victory.
