Let’s Play Mangrovia: A Guide to the Game
Welcome to Mangrovia, a unique and exciting board game that will take you on a thrilling journey through a tropical mangrove forest! In this guide, I’ll walk you through the game rules and help you understand how to play like a pro.
Objective
The goal of Mangrovia is to become the most successful explorer by collecting valuable treasures and expanding your influence in the mangrove forest. The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner!
Setting Up the Game
Before we dive into the gameplay, let’s set up the game board. Place the main game board in the center of the table, and give each player their own player board, colored markers, and a set of explorer tokens.
Gameplay
On your turn, you can perform up to four actions. These actions include:
- Explore: Place one of your explorer tokens on an unoccupied space of the main game board.
- Build: Use resources to construct buildings, which will give you special abilities and points.
- Harvest: Collect resources from your buildings and the main game board.
- Upgrade: Spend resources to upgrade your buildings, increasing their abilities and point values.
Throughout the game, you will need to carefully manage your resources, as they are essential for building and upgrading. Use your actions wisely to maximize your opportunities and gain an edge over your opponents.
Game End and Scoring
The game ends when either all the buildings have been constructed or all the explorer tokens have been placed on the main game board. At this point, it’s time to tally up your points!
You’ll score points for various achievements, including the number and types of buildings you’ve constructed, your influence in different areas of the mangrove forest, and the treasures you’ve collected. The player with the highest score wins the game and becomes the ultimate explorer!
Now that you know the rules, it’s time to gather your fellow adventurers and embark on an amazing journey through Mangrovia. Get ready for a thrilling and strategic gaming experience like no other. Good luck!

If you want to earn chief’s points, you need to gather amulets and construct huts:
- on the eight divine paths
- in the stone area
- in the pole area
There are four vertical and four horizontal divine paths. Each path starts next to or below a statue of a God and includes all the spaces in one column or row of the landscape.

Did you know that amulets can actually earn you extra points in the game? It’s true! When you have amulets in your possession, you’ll receive valuable chief’s points at the end of the game. But that’s not all – amulets also play a crucial role in building huts in specific locations.

If you manage to accumulate more chief’s points than any other player, you will emerge victorious and claim the title of the new chief.
Setting Up

- In the game with five players, each player will receive 8 huts and 1 bowl.
- In the game with four players, each player will receive 9 huts and 1 bowl.
- In the game with two or three players, each player will receive 10 huts and 2 bowls.
- In the three-player game, you will need to place a hut of an unused color on each of the 3 landscape spaces with a gray hut symbol
. In the two-player game, you will need to place such a hut on each space with a gray hut symbol
(3) as well as on each space with a white hut symbol
(7).
Let’s talk about how to play the game. It’s a two-player game where we start by putting a tile with the value 2 under the neutral hut in the pole area. This means that a tile with the value 3 will be on top of the pile.
Another important rule is that we need to block the last ritual site, which is landings 6 and 7, with a neutral bowl. This means that those landings will be completely ignored throughout the game.
1. Huts, Bowls, and Chief’s Pillars
To start the game, you place your chief’s pillar on space 0 of the chief’s track and you also receive huts and bowls in your color. You can see the details in the text box at the bottom left of the board.
Keep in mind that you won’t need the remaining huts, bowls, and chief’s pillars.

2. Game Cards and Starting Player Talisman
Alright, let’s get this game started! First things first, we need to pick a starting player. That lucky person gets to hold the talisman – a special item that gives them a little boost.
Now, it’s time to distribute the starting cards. The starting player receives two cards with the number 1 – those go into their hand. The player to their left gets the cards with the number 2. Then, clockwise around the table, the other players receive the cards with the numbers 3, 4, and 5. Any leftover starting cards go back in the box.
Before we dive into the game, we need to shuffle up the rest of the cards and create a draw pile. Place this pile facedown next to the gameboard. Now, let’s reveal four valuables and arrange them next to each other.
These are the valuables we’ll be aiming for! |
Alright, here’s the deal. First things first, we need to shuffle those landscape cards. Give each player two of them and hold onto them tight. As for the rest, we’ll keep them face-down in a pile near the gameboard. Now, let’s get to the good part.

Step 3: Boat and Birds of Paradise

Got it! Let me break down the instructions for you.
First, you need to place the boat on the designated boat space above the cluster of islands.
Next, take one bird of paradise and put it on the dark green mangrove space. Then, take the other bird of paradise and place it on the blue water space of the oracle rock.
Step 4: Amulets and Amulet Pillars
Now, stack the five amulets with a value of 1 and place them face up on the repository space below the amulet track. Keep the rest of the amulets in the amulet bag, which should be easily accessible next to the gameboard.
Each player needs to put their amulet pillar of their color in the left column next to space O of the amulet track. You won’t need the remaining amulet pillars.
Step 5: Pole Tiles
Lastly, sort the pole tiles based on their number values, from the lowest value of 2 to the highest value of 9. Put them in a face-up pile on the small island space next to the pole area.
(Remember, this is a two-player game. Don’t forget to read the text box to the left for specific instructions!)
How to Play
Playing the game involves following three phases, in a specific order:

- First, we need to place our bowls – that’s when we choose our actions.
- Next, we’ll move the boat and start carrying out those actions.
- Finally, we’ll prepare for the next round of the game.
Phase 1: Placing Bowls – Choosing Actions
I’ll start, and then we’ll take turns clockwise.
When it’s your turn, you can put your bowl on any empty ritual site in the archipelago. The symbols on the twelve landings tell us what actions we can take when the boat reaches that bowl.
When it’s my turn in the two- or three-player game, I can place my second bowl on any free ritual site. But I have to remember that I can’t place my first bowl on the first ritual site of the archipelago. That spot is off-limits for the starting player. However, if no one else has taken it, I can place my second bowl there. It’s like finding a hidden treasure!
Moving the Boat: Taking Action
I’m on a boat, sailing around the archipelago and making stops at landings 1 to 12. When I see a bowl at a ritual site, it’s time to take action! The person who owns the bowl gets to do something special at that landing.
Now, I can’t change the order of actions, but I do have a choice to skip or modify them if I want. If there’s no bowl at the ritual site, I can continue sailing to the next landing right away.
How to Take Action
Building Huts
![]() Check out Example 3: Right now, you can only build on water spaces and sand spaces. |
If I want to build a hut, I need to find an empty spot on the landscape. I’ll know it’s the right spot because there will be a bird of paradise on the oracle rock marking the landscape.
Placing birds of paradise:
So, here’s the deal: you need to put those birds of paradise in two spots on the oracle rock. But hey, if you want, you can let them stay where they currently are, no pressure.
Drawing cards:
Okay, listen up. When it comes to drawing cards, you can only take them from the draw piles or the face-up cards that are chillin’ next to them. Just so we’re clear, you can’t snag cards from other players, alright?

When it comes to drawing cards in this game, there are a few important rules to keep in mind. First off, you must follow the specified order in which the cards are drawn, whether they are face down or face up. As you draw each card, you have the freedom to choose whether it is a valuable card or a landscape card.
If you choose to draw two face-down cards, there is a twist. After you draw the first card, you are allowed to look at it before deciding whether to draw the next one. This gives you a chance to strategically plan your next move.
It’s worth noting that any face-up cards that you draw from either the valuables or landscapes displays are not immediately replaced. Instead, they are replaced in phase 3 of the game. This adds an element of surprise and keeps things interesting.
Now, let’s talk about how you can collect amulets:

When your amulet pillar is placed on the amulet track, you put a marker on the red-encircled spaces to show how many huts you have built there. The more huts you have on these spaces, the more amulets you can collect. Keep the amulets you collect facing downwards in front of you.

Constructing a Hut…
When a person sets out to build a home, they might consider creating a simple shelter. You might be wondering why anyone would choose to live in such a humble abode. Well, let me tell you, there are several reasons why constructing a hut can be appealing.
First and foremost, huts are known for their simplicity. They offer a basic structure that is easy to understand and build. You don’t need to be a master builder to put together a hut. With just a few materials and some basic tools, you can have a cozy space to call your own. It’s a straightforward process that doesn’t require a lot of fancy techniques or complicated equipment.
Another advantage of huts is their versatility. They can be built in various locations and climates. Whether you want to live in a tropical paradise or a snowy mountain range, a hut can be adapted to suit your needs. You can also customize the design to match your personal style and preferences. From rustic and charming to modern and sleek, the possibilities are endless.
But why choose a hut over a more traditional home? Well, there are a few reasons that might sway your decision. For one, huts can be more affordable to construct. The materials required are often readily available and inexpensive. This means you can save money on construction costs and put it towards other things, like furnishing your new living space.
Another reason to consider a hut is its environmental impact. Huts can be built using sustainable materials, such as bamboo or reclaimed wood. This reduces the demand for new resources and helps to minimize your carbon footprint. It’s a win-win situation for both you and the planet.
Lastly, huts offer a sense of freedom and independence. They can be easily relocated if you decide to move or explore new surroundings. You’re not tied down to a specific location or burdened with heavy mortgage payments. Instead, you have the flexibility to live wherever your heart desires.
So, if you’re looking for a simple and affordable housing option that allows you to live closer to nature and embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, maybe it’s time to consider building a hut. With a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can create a cozy and welcoming space that feels like home.

To construct a hut, you need to pay the exact amount of valuables or amulets shown on the space. If you don’t have the exact amount, you can’t build a hut there. You can’t pay more than what’s required, and you can’t use amulets if the space asks for valuables, or vice versa.
Alternatively, you can give up a landscape card that matches the landscape of the space.
When you build a hut on a space with chief’s points, you immediately move your chief’s pillar on the chief’s track forward by the indicated number of spaces.

If you made a hut in the icy region, you put the highest pole tile from the pile under the hut. Then, your chief’s pillar moves forward the same number of spaces as the value of the pole tile on the chief’s track.
Hey there!
Did you know that there are some special rules when it comes to building in the game? Let me fill you in!
First things first, you need to remember that both the stone area and the pole area have a center square that you can’t build on. So, no huts on those squares, okay?
Now, let’s talk about the rest of the building spaces. When you’re looking to build, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
One of the key factors to consider is that certain squares provide different resources. You’ll want to choose the right spots to give yourself the best chance at success.
It’s also important to think about the double-edged sword of claiming more space. While it can be tempting to expand quickly, remember that each new building you create will cost you more resources.
Oh, and here’s an important tip: make sure to position your buildings strategically. The way you arrange them can have a big impact on how your civilization grows and develops.
So, now that you know the rules, it’s time to jump in and start building your own unique civilization. Good luck!
Please note: The center square of both the stone area and the pole area are not considered building spaces. That means you may not build huts on these squares.

Building Two Huts: A Puzzling Conundrum
Imagine this bizarre scenario: You have been stranded on a deserted island, left with just enough materials to construct two huts. You scratch your head in bewilderment, wondering how to go about this peculiar task. On one hand, building two huts seems like the obvious choice – after all, who wouldn’t want an extra shelter? But on the other hand, you have limited resources at your disposal. This conundrum presents an intriguing puzzle that will require some clever thinking to solve.
As I ponder this perplexing situation, I can’t help but consider the pros and cons of each option. Building two huts offers the advantage of extra space and flexibility. With two shelters, you have the freedom to spread out and utilize the space as you see fit. One hut could be used for sleeping and the other for storage, or perhaps one could serve as a kitchen while the other acts as a living area. The possibilities are endless!
However, it’s important to note that building two huts also comes with its share of drawbacks. The reality is that constructing two shelters requires more time, effort, and resources. You’ll need to gather additional materials, such as wood and leaves, to ensure both huts can withstand the elements. Additionally, you’ll need to divide your labor and focus between two separate projects, potentially slowing down the overall progress. It’s a double-edged sword of sorts – more space, but more work.
On the other hand, there is the alternative of building just one hut. By focusing all your attention and resources on a single shelter, you can expedite the construction process. With only one hut to build, you’ll be able to complete it more quickly and efficiently. This option also allows you to conserve your limited resources, making them go further. However, it means sacrificing the luxury of having two separate spaces. You’ll need to carefully consider and prioritize your needs, deciding what is most important to you in this peculiar predicament.
As I grapple with this conundrum, I can’t help but feel torn. Both options offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, leaving me in a state of perplexity. Ultimately, the decision will depend on what I value most – the extra space and flexibility of two huts or the efficiency and conservation gained from building just one.
It’s fascinating to explore the intricacies of this thought-provoking scenario. Building two huts or just one – the choice is mine. As I mull over the possibilities, I marvel at the ingenuity required to navigate this puzzling conundrum.

If you want to build two huts, you can do so starting from landing #10. You simply place each hut on a different space, one after the other. Remember, you have to pay for each hut separately and the same rules apply as described before in “Building one hut…”.

Building Double Huts: A Clever Strategy
If you want to make the most out of your game in Mangrovia, consider building double huts. This advanced technique allows you to create two huts at once, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind before you get started.
Firstly, you can only build double huts from landing #9 onwards. This means you’ll need to progress in the game before you can take advantage of this strategy.
When building a double hut, you’ll need to pay double the amount of valuables or amulets compared to a single hut. Additionally, you’ll also need two corresponding landscape cards. It may seem like a lot, but trust me, the rewards are worth it!
If the space where you build your double hut shows the chief’s points
, something special happens. You get to move your chief’s pillar double the number of steps forward, instantly giving you a major advantage in the game.
However, it’s essential to remember that double huts have their limitations. You cannot build them in certain areas, as shown in the image below:

Areas where double huts are off-limits include the entire stone area, the entire pole area, and all 10 amulet spaces. Make sure you plan your double hut placement accordingly to avoid any unnecessary setbacks.
Lastly, note that you cannot upgrade already-built huts into double huts. You’ll need to construct them from scratch.
Double-Landscape Spaces: A World of Possibilities

There are two spaces on the gameboard that have a unique double-landscape layout. Each of these spaces consists of two different landscapes. When you decide to construct a hut on one of these spaces, you must use a landscape card that matches one of the landscapes on that space. Additionally, the landscape you choose must be occupied by one of the birds on the oracle rock.
If you choose to build a double hut on a double-landscape space, you have the option to use landscape cards from one or both of the landscapes on that space.

However, it’s important to note that you cannot use landscape cards that correspond to a landscape type that doesn’t have a bird on the oracle rock. Be sure to choose wisely!
What Happens After I Build a Hut?
When you finish using valuable and landscape cards, you gather them together and place them in separate discard piles. Don’t forget to gather the starting cards and put them back in the game box. If you ever run out of cards to draw from, simply shuffle the discard pile of the same type and use it as the new draw pile.
Make sure to set aside any amulets you’ve used for building huts. Only when the bag is empty, you can return all the amulets you’ve set aside (up until now) back into the bag.

Phase 3: Getting Ready for the Next Game Round
- If I’m the player who has set up my bowl on the first sacred spot of the archipelago (somewhere between landings 1 and 12) during this round, I get to grab the talisman and become the starting player for the next game round.

Important:
The concept of self-identity is a fascinating and complex one. It’s something we grapple with throughout our lives, constantly seeking to understand who we are and how we fit into the world around us. Our identities are shaped by a multitude of factors, including our experiences, relationships, and personal traits. It’s a never-ending journey of self-discovery, with no definitive answer or destination.

If nobody is already at the first ritual site in the archipelago, then the person who just finished the last round gives the talisman to the person sitting on their right. That person will be the starting player for the next round. Now, it’s their job to place the birds of paradise on the two empty spaces on the oracle rock.

Take your bowls back from the special places and put the boat back where it started.
Fill up the display with 4 new valuable cards, using cards from the pile.
Fill up the display with 3 new landscape cards, using cards from the pile.
Once a player builds their last hut, we finish the current round of the game. Then we score some bonus points.
Let’s see who has the most huts on each of the eight divine paths. Remember, double huts count as two huts.
Hey there! Did you know that the numbers in front of the statues tell you how many points you’ll get for having the most or second-most huts on each path? Pretty cool, right?
If two players have the same number of huts, the one whose hut is closer to the statue wins. But here’s the kicker: in the two- and three-player games, huts of a neutral color count too! So, if you’re behind in huts compared to the neutral player, you’ll be ranked lower in the scoring as well. Fair is fair!
Let’s Talk About the Stone Area
When it comes to calculating your chief’s points in the stone area, it’s pretty simple. Just multiply the number of huts you have in the stone area by the total number of huts in that area. Easy peasy!
What About the Pole Area?
If you’ve made the most huts in the pole area, you get 12 chief’s points. The player with the second most huts in that area gets 6 chief’s points.
If there’s a tie (the same number of huts), the winner is the player who built their first hut in the pole area before the others in the tie.
You can easily figure this out by checking the pole tiles under the huts: Huts on lower-value pole tiles were built first, while those on higher-value pole tiles were built later.
In a two-player game, the neutral hut is counted (to break a tie). So, if you have fewer huts in the pole area than the neutral player, you’ll be ranked below them in the scoring.
Remaining Amulets
For every amulet you have, you get chief’s points equal to the amulet’s value.
Example: Scoring is crucial. It tells me how well I did on something. It can show me where I excelled and where I need to improve. But what if I told you that scoring can sometimes be not so simple? What if I said that there are different methods and factors to consider when it comes to scoring? Would you believe me? Well, it’s true. Scoring can be a complicated beast, with many different facets to understand and navigate. It’s not just about getting a high score or a low score. There is so much more to it than that.

Game Over: The Final Moments
Have you ever found yourself at the end of a game, wondering how you got there and what it all means? I know I have. It’s a strange mix of emotions – excitement, disappointment, and a hint of sadness. But the ending of a game is more than just a conclusion; it’s a culmination of choices and actions that shape the entire journey.
When I immerse myself in a game, I become the protagonist – the hero or adventurer on a quest. Every decision I make has consequences and can determine the outcome of the story. It’s like being in control of a character’s fate, where my choices shape the world I’m exploring.
As I progress through the game, I face challenges and overcome obstacles. Each triumph reinforces my determination to reach the end, while each defeat pushes me to learn from my mistakes and try again. It’s a constant cycle of trial and error that propels me forward with a sense of purpose.
But the real magic lies in the final moments of the game, where everything converges and the story reaches its climax. It’s a moment filled with anticipation and uncertainty as I wonder how it will all unfold.
Will I defeat the final boss and save the day, or will I fall short and face defeat? The outcome hangs in the balance, and it all depends on my skills, strategy, and a little bit of luck. The pressure builds, and my heart races as I confront the ultimate challenge.
And then, the moment arrives. The battle ensues, and I give it everything I’ve got. Each move is calculated, each action deliberate. It’s a test of my abilities, and I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, it’s over. The dust settles, and I stand victorious or defeated. The ending plays out before me, revealing the consequences of my choices and actions throughout the game.
It’s an exhilarating and bittersweet moment. I may feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing that I’ve reached the end and overcome challenges. But there’s also a twinge of sadness, as I say goodbye to the world and characters that have become familiar companions on my virtual journey.
Yet, even though the game is over, its impact lingers. The lessons I’ve learned, the memories I’ve made, and the emotions I’ve experienced stay with me. They become a part of my gaming story, adding depth and richness to my overall gaming experience.
So, the ending of a game is not just a conclusion but a reflection of the journey itself. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the ability of games to evoke emotions and captivate players. And as I move on to the next adventure, I carry these experiences with me, ready to embark on new quests and uncover new worlds.

Once all the players have moved their chief’s pillars to mark their chief’s points on the chief’s track, it becomes clear who the Gods favor the most: you! The player with the most chief’s points will be declared the winner and the future tribe leader.
In the event of a tie, the player (among those tied) with the highest total value of amulets at the end of the game emerges victorious.
It’s even possible to have multiple winners.
A Different Game Twist – The Stowe Area Tiles
So here’s the deal. All the normal rules of the game still apply, but there are a few extra things to keep in mind. We’re introducing eight new tiles called stone area tiles. Take eight of them and randomly place them face-up on the corresponding spaces on the board. The remaining eight tiles go back in the box where they belong.
Now, if you’re playing with two or three players, things are a little different. You’re only going to place seven stone area tiles on the board. That’s because no tile goes on the space with the hut of a “neutral” color. Simple enough, right?
Alright, time for some special rules. If you happen to build a hut on a space that has a stone area tile, guess what? You get to keep that tile. It’s yours now. And hey, if you’re lucky enough to get a tile with a God’s statue on it, hold onto it tight. That tile stays with you for the rest of the game.
Oh, and here’s a neat trick. If you end up in a tie on a divine path and you have the tile with the corresponding God’s statue, well, that tie is automatically in your favor. Pretty sweet, huh?
So, here’s the thing. This game is a bit different from the regular version. You see, in this game, the distance between your huts and the God’s statue doesn’t matter. Yeah, I know, it’s kinda weird, but that’s how it is. Whether your huts are close to the statue or far away, it really doesn’t make a difference. It’s like that saying, “distance doesn’t matter when it comes to love.” Same idea applies here, but with huts and statues instead of people. So, you don’t have to worry about positioning your huts strategically or anything. It’s all about something else in this game. Pretty cool, right? It adds a whole new element of surprise and strategy. Makes you think, “what else is important in this game? What do I need to focus on?” It’s like a puzzle waiting to be solved. You’ll figure it out though, I know you will. Good luck!

When I play the game, I can use tiles with different designs on my turn. Here’s how it works: I simply select a tile with a specific motif that I want to use, and I use it for that turn. After I’m done using the tile, I discard it.

Hey there! Let’s talk about this super important stuff. So, you know, there’s this tile thing, right? Well, it’s really cool because it’s worth 3 points. Which is, like, a lot. I mean, who doesn’t love earning points, am I right?

Hey there! I’ve got some exciting news for you. This fancy tile is not just any ordinary tile – it’s actually an amulet! Cool, right? And guess what? It’s got a value of 2!

Let’s talk about a fun game called “Landscape wild card”. This game has a special tile called a “wild card”. When you have this tile, you have a unique power. You can choose to give up the tile and use it to build a hut on any landscape space you want, even if there are birds of paradise there.
Here’s another idea:
If you’d like, you can also try using only the stone area tiles that show God’s statues. It’s a challenging twist that can make the game more interesting. On the other hand, you can also remove these tiles and use the “godless” tiles instead. The choice is yours!
