Rules for Playing Double Ditto

Double Ditto is a super fun game that can be played with as few as four players or as many as ten. The goal of the game is to come up with answers that match with other players. The more matches you get, the more points you earn!

Here’s how you play: everyone gathers around and one person becomes the “Ditto Master”. The Ditto Master picks a card and reads the topic out loud, like “Things you do at the beach”. Then, everyone secretly writes down two answers that they think will match with other players’ answers.

Once everyone has written down their answers, the Ditto Master says “Double Ditto” and the players take turns reading their answers out loud. If your answer matches with someone else’s answer, you get a point!

For example, if the topic is “Famous Disney characters” and both you and your friend wrote down “Mickey Mouse”, you would get a point for that match. You can even get multiple points if your answer matches with more than one player!

The game continues with new topics and new rounds. At the end, the player with the most points wins the game!

When we play this game, we try to come up with answers that we think other players will also write down. It’s fun to see how many matches we can get!

We score points by writing down the same answers as other players. Sometimes, even obnoxious answers can match the answers of other obnoxious players!

How to Play

First, we each get a score sheet. Then, we take turns being the card reader, which we call the Ditto Master. The Ditto Master picks a category card from the stack and reads it out loud to everyone. After the card is read, the Ditto Master flips the 15-second timer.

Let’s say the first card is “Types of cheeses.”

Each of us, including the Ditto Master, has 15 seconds to quickly write down two answers that come to mind. For this card, “Types of cheeses,” we could write down: cheddar, brie, swiss, string, provolone, moldy, and so on.

So, here’s how it goes: the Ditto Master goes first. Then, it’s your turn to share your answers with the group. If someone else has the same answer as you, they should say “Ditto” and cross it off their list.

Imagine this: the answer read out loud is “cheddar”. If you wrote “cheddar” too, you’d say “Ditto” and cross it off. But if no one else wrote “cheddar”, you leave it alone.

Got it? Good. Keep going around the group, with each person taking turns to read their answers and cross off any matches. The remaining answers on each person’s list are the ones no one else wrote down.

Now, the player to the left of the Ditto Master gets a turn. They become the new Ditto Master and start the next round by reading a fresh card from the pile.

The Game Finale

Once all the answers have been read, it’s time to tally up your points!

If one of your answers gets crossed off, that’s a “Ditto” and you earn 1 point. But if both of your answers are crossed off, congratulations – you’ve got a “Double Ditto,” and that’s worth 3 points!

So here’s how it works: each player keeps their own score written down on their sheet. The game goes on until each player has had their turn as the Ditto Master four times if there are four to six players, or three times if there are seven to nine players. If there are ten or more players, you play one to two rounds.

At the end of the game, everyone adds up their scores and the player with the most points is declared the winner!
