Teen do paanch – learn how to play with

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Teen Do Paanch!

Let’s kick off the game by selecting someone as the dealer for this round.

Here’s how we’ll do it: we’ll draw three cards (2, 3, and 5) from the deck, and place them face down on the table. Each player will then choose one card. The person who picks the card with the number 2 will be the dealer for the first round. The one with the card numbered 3 will become the second round dealer, and the player who gets the card numbered 5 will be the third round dealer.

In Teen Do Paanch, we play in a counter-clockwise direction. The dealer’s job is to win two tricks, the player on their right will try to win five tricks, and the player on their left will aim for three tricks.

Alright, here’s how we play Teen Do Paanch. First things first, the dealer doles out five cards to each player face down. And guess what? The player on the dealer’s right gets to peek at their cards and choose the trump suit for the round. Pretty sweet, huh?

Once that’s settled, the dealer gives everyone three more cards face down, and then two more cards face down. This brings the total to ten cards in each player’s hand. Got it so far? Great!

HOW TO PLAY TEEN DO PAANCH

Now that we’ve got our cards sorted out, it’s time to get this trick-taking party started. The player to the right of the dealer leads the way by laying down the first card to the trick. Then, we keep going in a counter-clockwise direction, with each player playing one card to the trick. Easy-peasy, right?

So here’s the deal: when it’s my turn to play a card, I have to play a card from the same suit as the one that started the trick. But if I don’t have any cards from that suit, no worries! I can play any card from my hand, including the trump suit.

Now, the player who plays the highest card of the same suit as the first card played, or the highest trump card, wins the trick. Then that winner gets to lead the first card of the next trick.

After we’ve played all 10 tricks, we need to figure out if we’ve won enough tricks to meet the game rules. It might be three, two, or even five tricks, depending on the rules.

We keep track of how many tricks each player has won.

If all of us have managed to win the required number of tricks, we move on to the next round like normal, with the dealer passing the cards to the player on their left.

But what happens if a player doesn’t win as many tricks as they were supposed to? Well, there’s a penalty in store for them in the next round.

Here’s how it works: in the next round, that player has to let the ones who won more tricks than they were supposed to pick random cards from their hand without looking. These cards are then added to the winner’s own hand, and the penalized player can choose another card to give to the person they drew the card from.

Let’s say player A was supposed to win 5 tricks, while players B and C were supposed to win 3 and 2 tricks, respectively. But, player A only manages to win 3 tricks, while players B and C win 4 and 3 tricks. In the next round, both players B and C will get to pick a random card from player A.

After this penalty, the round proceeds as usual, starting with the player on the right of the dealer playing the first trick.

The Game’s Conclusion

At the end of each round, the number of tricks made by each player is recorded. And at the end of the third game, the player who has won the most tricks overall becomes the winner of the whole game.
