QIUQIU
QiuQiu is a game where 2 to 6 players bet and try to make the best hand using the dominoes they receive.
Although it can be played with 2 to 6 people, it’s more fun when everyone joins in. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the traditional dominoes used in this game are not made of tiles, but instead are thick card stock. Before starting the game, it’s important to set the minimum and maximum bets and antes. And of course, always remember to play responsibly.
SETUP AND BETTING
First, we choose a random player to be the dealer. The dealer position changes with each new round. Before shuffling the cards, each player who wants to play must pay an ante into the pot.
The dealer shuffles the deck, and if anyone else wants to shuffle, they can too. Then, the dealer gives each player a hand of 3 dominoes, facing them down, to start the game.
So here’s how it goes: we all get a look at our hand, and then it’s time to start betting. I’ll be the one to kick things off. Before you make a bet, you have a couple of choices: you can either check if you’re not ready to bet just yet, or you can go ahead and make a bet. Once a bet is made, you’ve got a few more options: you can fold if you’d rather back out, you can call to match the bet, or you can raise if you’re feeling confident. The betting keeps going until either one player is left standing without folding, or until everyone has had a chance to bet and we’ve all put the same amount in the pot.
Now, once the betting is all said and done, if more than one player is still in the game, we get to the good part. If there’s only one player left who hasn’t folded, then that lucky player takes home the entire pot, and we can start a fresh new round.
Now, let’s talk about those dominos and hand rankings.
These dominos we’re playing with have two sides, each with a number of dots ranging from 0 to 6. There’s a whole bunch of different combinations you can get with these two sides, from 0/0 all the way to 6/6. It’s pretty wild!
When it comes to ranking hands in dominoes, it all depends on how you pair your tiles. In each player’s hand, there will be 4 dominoes, and the goal is to create the strongest possible hand.
Each hand is made up of two pairs, and each pair has a value. To determine the value, you add up the total of the numbers on each tile, and then look at the one’s place. For example, let’s say your first pair consists of a 6/6 and a 2/4. The total would be (6+6) + (2+4), which equals 18. The value of your pair would then be 8.
Your final hand is made up of two values. When it comes to ranking, your best value is compared first. The values can range from 0, which is the lowest, to 9, which is the highest. So, the best ordinary hand you can have is 9,9.
SPECIAL HANDS
Hey, did you know that there are 4 super special hands in this game of tiles? They’re way more powerful than any regular hand you can get. We call them the Enam Dewa (High), Empat Balak, Murni Besar, and Murni Kecil (low).
Let’s start with Enam Dewa, which is also known as six gods. It’s a hand where all the tiles add up to 6. The tiles you need for this hand are the 3/3, 4/2, 5/1, and 6/0. This is the absolute best hand you can get. Talk about luck!
Next up is Empat Balak, also known as four doubles. It’s a hand where you have four pairs of the same tiles. So, for example, you could have 1/1, 3/3, 5/5, and 0/0. Pretty cool, right?
Now let’s move on to Murni Besar, also known as Pure Big. This is a hand with a total value of 39 or more. For example, you could have 6/6, 6/5, 6/4, and 6/3. This adds up to 42. It’s all about those big numbers!
Finally, we have Murni Kecil, also known as Pure Small. This is a hand with a value of 9 or less. For instance, you could have 0/0, 0/1, 0/2, and 0/3. The total value of this hand is 6. Sometimes, smaller is better!
GAMEPLAY
After everyone has finished betting and there are still multiple players in the game, that’s when things really get started. The dealer will go around the table in a clockwise direction and deal each remaining player a new set of dominoes. This marks the beginning of the second round of bidding.
If there’s only one player left after the bidding round and they end up winning the pot, then the game is over. However, if there are still multiple players remaining, it’s time to reveal everyone’s hands. The player with the highest-ranked specialty hand will win the pot. In the event that no one has a specialty hand, the player with the highest-ranked ordinary hand will take home the pot. And if there happens to be a tie, both players will split the pot evenly.
END OF GAME
The game will officially come to an end when a player decides they no longer want to continue playing and drops out of the game.
