Octo – learn to play with

OCTO

Hey there! I want to tell you about Octo, a really cool dice game invented by Reiner Knizia. In this game, you’ve got to know when to stop rolling the dice so you can score points. It’s super fun and a bit of a gamble!

Here’s how you play Octo: you’ll need eight six-sided dice and something to keep score. The number of rounds you play depends on the number of players. If there are four players, you play four rounds. The person with the most points at the end of the final round becomes the winner!

To decide who goes first, each player rolls a single die. The player with the highest roll gets to go first, while the player with the lowest roll keeps score. After that, the game continues clockwise around the table.

Let’s Play!

When it’s my turn in the game, I start by rolling all eight dice. Then comes the big decision: Which number should I set aside? I have to choose at least one, but I can’t choose more than one. Let’s say I roll 1-2-2-3-4-5-5-5. In this case, I have a few options. I could set aside the 1, or one or more of the 2’s, or the 3, or the 4, or one or more of the 5’s. Once I’ve made up my mind, I also need to decide if I want to keep going or stop right there. It’s a tough call, but I think I’m ready to take the chance!

If you decide to keep going on your turn, you can keep rolling and putting aside dice as long as there are new numbers to put aside. For example, if you have already put aside some 5’s, you can’t put aside any more 5’s. If you roll and can’t put aside any dice, your turn is over right away. You don’t get any points for that round.

If you decide to stop your turn, you get points equal to the total value of the dice you put aside.

We keep playing like this around the table until we finish all the rounds.
