MITAINE

Hey there! Ever heard of Mitaine? It’s a cool game from Canada, or as some folks call it, Mittens. The game is all about scoring points by playing cards. But not just any cards – two cards that have the same value. The cards go into a discard pile, and if you match the top card, you might just capture some cards and earn points. The goal? Be the first player or team to reach five hundred points. So, let’s get those points piling up!

SETUP

So, let’s start setting up the game. Shuffle the cards real good, and then deal them out based on how many players are in the game. If there are two or four players, each player gets three cards, making sure everyone has six cards in total. Oh, and don’t forget to give the discard pile four cards to start with. Easy peasy!

If there are three players, things are a bit different. Each player gets a little more – eight cards, to be precise. And the discard pile? Well, it gets four cards too. Once all the cards are dealt, you’re good to go!

GAMEPLAY

When we sit down to play the game, it’s important to remember that the one sitting to the left of the dealer is the first player to start. And as we play, we’ll take turns going clockwise around the group. So, it’s my turn, then it’s your turn, then the person next to you, and so on.

Now, here’s something interesting – if you happen to have two or more cards that have the same rank, then you can call a group. And let me tell you, there are some pretty cool names for these groups!

So, if you have two cards of the same rank, you can call it a Mitten. Now, that’s a fun name, isn’t it? But wait, there’s more! If you manage to have three cards of the same rank, you can call it a Glove. And finally, if you really luck out and have four cards of the same rank, you can call it a Sock. How cool is that?

Now, here’s how it works – when you call a group, you have to take one of the cards from that group and put it on the discard pile. That card will no longer be in your hand. But don’t worry, you still get to play the rest of the cards from that group on your turn, one card at a time.

Here’s something interesting – if you call a Mitten, it will take you two turns to play all the cards from that group. A Glove will take you three turns to finish, and a Sock will take you four whole turns to complete. So, you’ll need some patience and strategy if you want to finish your groups!

When we capture a whole group, we get to take the entire discard pile. If I complete a Mitten, I take one card from the Mitten and put it next to me, faceup. I discard the rest of the cards. If I complete a Glove, I keep two of the cards and discard the rest. If I have Socks, I can keep three cards and discard the rest.

My opponents have a chance to steal my groups if they have a group that is higher-ranked than the group I called. When I complete a group first, I get to steal the pile, along with any groups that were in it.

If there are two cards on top of the discard pile that match and no one has called them yet, I can add a card of the same rank and call the group. We keep playing until someone reaches five hundred points.

Scoring

When you play the card game Mitten, you earn points based on the combinations of cards you have. Let me explain:

  • If you have two cards of the same rank, like two Jacks or two Aces, you get 10 points. This is called a Mitten.
  • If you have three cards of the same rank, like three Queens or three Kings, you get 100 points. This is called a Glove.
  • If you have four cards of the same rank, like four Tens or four Nines, you get 200 points. This is called a Sock.
  • If you have two Jacks, you get 50 points. This is called a Jack Mitten.
  • If you have three Jacks, you get 150 points. This is called a Jack Glove.
  • If you have four Jacks, you get 300 points. This is called a Jack Sock.
  • If you have the Ten of Diamonds twice, you get 50 points. This is called a Ten of Diamonds.

END OF GAME

The game ends when a player or team reaches a score of five hundred points. When this happens, they are declared the winners! So start playing, aim for those high-scoring combinations, and may the best player win!
