Marjapussi – learn to play with

Marjapussi: A Game of Strategy

Hey there! Have you ever heard of Marjapussi? It’s a really cool trick-taking card game that four people can play together. The main objective of the game is to score exactly 10 game points before the other team does. Exciting, isn’t it?

Before we start playing, it’s important for all the players to come together and have a discussion. We need to decide which scoring system and deck we want to use. There are two options available: the traditional game and the simplified game. So, which one are we going to choose?

Getting Started: The Setup

Now, let’s talk about the setup! If we decide to play the simplified game, we need to remove all the cards that are 6 and lower (or 7 and lower). This will leave us with either a 32-card deck or a 28-card deck. On the other hand, if we choose the traditional rules, we have to remove all the cards that are 5 and below. This will give us a 36-card deck.

Once we have sorted out the deck, it’s time to determine the first dealer. The dealer is chosen randomly, and then the dealer’s position moves to the left for every new deal. After shuffling the deck, the player sitting to the dealer’s right gets the chance to cut the deck. That’s how we get things started in Marjapussi!

When we play this card game, the dealer gives each player an equal number of cards. But here’s the fun part – the dealer gives out one card at a time! So, for a deck with 36 cards, each player gets 9 cards. If we have a deck with 32 cards, then it’s 8 cards per player. And finally, if we have a deck with 28 cards, each player receives 7 cards.

The Order of Cards and Their Values

Now, let me tell you about the order of the cards. In this game, the Ace is the highest-ranking card. Then comes the 10, followed by the King, Queen, Jack, 9, 8, 7, and finally, the 6. By the way, there’s no fixed trump suit when the game begins, but we can declare one during a round if we want!

Now, I have something interesting to share with you. Each of the cards in the deck has a value, and we use these values to score points. In the simplified version of the game, Aces are worth 10 points, and 10s are also worth 10 points. Kings, Queens, and Jacks, on the other hand, are each worth 5 points. As for the other cards, they don’t have any value at all. But if we follow the traditional rules, Aces are worth 11 points, 10s are worth 10 points, Kings are worth 4 points, Queens are worth 3 points, Jacks are worth 2 points, and again, all the other cards don’t hold any value.

Time to Play!

So here’s how the game starts. I’m sitting to the left of the dealer and it’s my turn to go first. I can pick any card from my hand to play. But here’s the catch: the other players have to play a card of the same suit as mine if they have one. If they don’t, they can play a trump card if they have one. And get this, even if my partner is currently winning the trick, I still have to play to win.

If, for some reason, I don’t have a card of the same suit or a trump card, I can play any card I want. But let’s talk about winning tricks. If someone plays a trump card, the highest-ranking trump wins the trick. If no one played a trump, then the highest-ranking card of the same suit as the card I led wins.

When someone wins a trick, they collect all the cards from that trick and keep them in a separate pile called the score pile. And guess what? The winner of the trick gets to lead the next one.

Now let’s talk about marriages and trumps.

When I win a trick, I have the option to declare a marriage. It’s a way to make a specific suit the trump suit for the rest of the round. There are three ways to declare a marriage, but I can only attempt it once after winning a trick. If I fail to declare a marriage, I have to wait until I win another trick. Oh, and I can only declare cards that I currently have in my hand, not the ones I have already played or won.

One way to declare a marriage is to have a complete marriage in my hand. This means I have a king and a queen of the same suit in my hand right now. And then I can announce it as a marriage.

If you want to declare a marriage in the game, there are three different ways you can do it. Let me break them down for you.

The first way is straightforward – you simply declare a full marriage from your own hand. But there’s a catch! Once you declare a full marriage, you can no longer ask your partner for marriages, and they can’t ask you either. It’s like a one-time deal.

The second way is to ask your partner if they have any marriages ready to go. If they do, they can declare it and choose which one to declare if they have multiple options. However, if you ask your partner for marriages, you lose the ability to declare full marriages from your own hand, and they can’t ask you for marriages either. It’s a trade-off, but you can still help out with half marriages.

The third way is a bit more hopeful – you can ask your partner for a half marriage. This means you have half of a marriage and you’re hoping your partner has the other half. If they do, they can respond with a yes, and the marriage is declared. If you go this route, you and your partner can no longer declare or ask each other for marriages. But you can still declare half marriages.

SCORING

Once I finish playing all my tricks and win the points, I can score game points. There are a few actions that can earn me game points during the game. If I declare the trump’s marriage, my team gets 2 game points. For any other marriage declarations, we receive 1 game point. Winning the final trick also earns me 1 point, and the team that has the majority of the card value gets 1 game point as well.

To win the game, my team needs to score exactly 10 points. If we score more than 10 points, our score is reduced to 7 points. But if we lose all the tricks in a round and end up with no tricks won, our score is reduced to 0.

END OF GAME

The game comes to an end when a team reaches 10 game points. That team becomes the winners.
