Love Letter is an exciting card game that can be played by 2 to 4 people. The main objective of the game is to be the first player to collect enough tokens to win. You can achieve this by either being the last player remaining in a round or by holding the highest-ranked card when the round ends.
Here are the setup instructions for the original version of Love Letter:
1. To start the game, one player is chosen to be the dealer for each round.
2. The dealer shuffles the deck, which consists of 16 cards. The top card is placed facedown and not used in the game.
3. If you’re playing with only 2 players, remove 3 additional cards from the deck and place them face-up.
4. Each player is then dealt a single card from the deck. The remaining deck is put in the center of the playing area, facedown.
5. Players can look at their own cards but must keep them hidden from the other players.
Now that you know how to set up the game, let’s learn about the ranking of the cards.
There are a total of 16 cards in the game, numbered from 1 to 8. The higher the number on the card, the more powerful it is.
HOW TO PLAY
The game begins with the youngest player or the player who went on a date last.
On your turn, you will draw a card from the deck and add it to your hand. Then, you must choose a card from your hand to discard, following the instructions on the card. Be careful, because some cards may have negative effects. Always read your cards carefully.
Discarded cards are placed in front of the player who played them. After resolving all effects, you can pass your turn to the next player.
Your goal is to keep your card number a secret and try to guess the numbers of other players’ cards at the same time.
So, there are some cards that let you knock other players out of the game. When someone gets knocked out, they have to show their last card, but it doesn’t do anything. They’re out until the next round starts.
END OF ROUND
The round ends in one of two ways. Either everyone else gets knocked out and there’s only one player left, or when a player finishes their turn and there are no more cards in the draw deck.
If there’s only one player left, they get a token of affection and the next round begins.
If there are still multiple players when the deck runs out, everyone shows their last card. The player with the highest-ranked card gets the token. If there’s a tie, we compare the values of their discard piles, and the higher value wins the token.
Here’s how the game works: after we finish a round and no one has won yet, we gather up all the cards and start a new round.
GAME OVER
The game is over when a player collects the required number of affection tokens. In a game with two players, you’ll need 7 tokens. For a game with three players, you’ll need 5 tokens. And in a game with four players, you’ll need 4 tokens.
