Keep Trying: Never Give Up!
In this exciting card game, the objective is simple: Win Rounds!
Keep Trying can be played by 3-7 players, making it perfect for a fun gathering.
Grab a standard 52-card deck and get ready for an engaging gambling session!
Before we dive into the game, let’s talk about the rank of the cards. The highest card is the Ace, followed by the King, Queen, Jack, and so on, all the way down to the lowly 2.
Now, let’s get into the details of how to play Keep Trying!
How to Deal:
To get started, the first dealer is chosen randomly – you can use any method you like for this! Once the dealer is selected, they will distribute 5 cards to each player. Make sure to deal the cards face-down, one at a time, to add a little mystery to the game.
After everyone has their hand, the dealer will place a row of cards, face-down, in the center of the table. The number of cards in this row should be one less than the number of players. This will create anticipation and excitement as the game unfolds!
When the deal is done, you can get rid of up to 3 cards from your hand and get new ones from the dealer.
Everyone agrees on an ante. After the deal, each player puts their ante on each card on the table. The last player puts their ante on the table without a card.
THE GAME
Once the antes are in, the game starts. Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player takes turns and can choose to do any or all of the following:
-
Here’s how you can play the card game:
- Put a card or a set of cards of the same value on the table, face-up. When someone does this, anyone else who wants to play must beat the previous play. You can do this by playing more cards or by playing the same number of cards, but with a higher value. The cards are ranked with A being the highest, then K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, and 4 as the lowest. Twos are wild and can be any card from A to 4.
- Put a three on the table. Threes are ranked by their suits: hearts are the highest, followed by diamonds, spades, and clubs.
- Get rid of 1 to 3 cards. You will get new cards to replace them after the round is over.
- Pass your turn and wait for the next round to start.
Once it’s your turn and I’ve had mine, we determine the winner for that round. If we need more cards, we get dealt them to replace the ones we played.
We start a new round. The next round always starts with the player on the left of the person who started the previous round. The number of rounds we play is the same as the number of people in the game. Each of us gets a chance to start a round.
THE WINNING ROUNDS
If no threes are played, the person who plays the highest set of cards wins the round. They take some chips from the table and the card that’s under them.
If someone plays a three, we split the reward between the winner (the person who played the highest set of cards) and the person who played the highest three of the same suit. The winner gets to choose whether they want the chips or the card, and the person who played the three gets whatever is left.
If the winner and the player with the highest suited three are the same person, they get both the ante and the card.
Once the winnings are collected and/or divided, the dealer deals replacement cards as needed. Each player should have at least 5 cards, but they can have more from their winnings.
If the deck runs out while replenishing hands, the dealer collects all the discarded cards – except threes – shuffles them, and deals them out.
The player who wins the most rounds is the winner of the game.
