Jig the card game – learn how to play with game rules

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Hey there, let’s talk about Jig!

In this game, the main goal is for me to be the first player to get rid of all my cards.

Here’s what you need to know:

There can be 2 to 5 players in a game. We’ll be using a standard deck of 52 cards. The cards are ranked from High to Low, with the King being the highest and the Ace being the lowest.

Before we start, let’s deal. The dealer (or one of the players) will give each player a card face-down. The dealer starts from their left and deals clockwise until everyone has a card.

Jig is a matching game. Now, let’s get into the gameplay.

I’ll be honest, this game is great for the whole family! It’s a super fun and engaging game that can be enjoyed by everyone.

So, let’s dive into how to play Jig:

Let’s begin with the player who is sitting on the dealer’s left. You can choose any card from your hand, but make sure to play it face up. The next player has to play a card of the same suit, but it must be higher in value than your card. For example, if you play the 2 of Hearts, the next player should play the 3 of Hearts.

The game always moves to the left, following a clockwise pattern.

When you’re playing a card game called “Snip, Snap, Snorum, Hicockalorum, Jig!” with your friends, here’s how it goes:

I’m the first player, so I get to choose the suit of the cards we’ll be playing. When I play my card, I say “Snip.”

Then it’s the second player’s turn. If they have a card of the same suit and a higher rank, they say “Snap” when they play it.

Next comes the third player, or if it’s just two of us, I start again. When this player plays their card, they say “Snorum.”

Now it’s the fourth player’s turn. When they play their card, they say “Hicockalorum.”

Finally, it’s the next person’s turn. They announce “Jig!” and their job is to turn down the sequence of five cards so we can start the next round.

If a player can’t play a card in the suit we’ve set, they have to pass their turn.

And here’s a fun twist: if someone plays a king, the next player says “Jig!” because there isn’t another card in the suit sequence for this game.

Remember, every player has to play a card if they have one to play.

HOW TO WIN

Alright, listen up! I’m gonna tell you how to win this game. It’s best if you have some counters handy. That way, when you run out of cards, you’ll get some counters from each player equal to the number of cards you still have. Keep in mind, this isn’t a quick game. You’ll need to play it a few times to determine a real winner.

Now, if you’re looking for a shorter game, you can skip the counters. Just declare the first person to run out of cards as the winner. Simple as that!

But here’s the deal: in order to win, all players must say a certain word on their turn. Pay attention, ’cause these are the magic words: “Snip”, “Snap”, “Snorum”, “Hicockalorum”, and “Jig!” Say the right word and victory is yours!

HISTORY OF JIG

Jig is a twist on the classic card game, Snip, Snap, Snorum, and Stops. I wanted to create a version that was a bit longer and more challenging. You see, in Jig, the odds of getting a specific card in the same suit are lower compared to getting a card with the same rank but a different suit. This adds more complexity to the game and creates more opportunities for different rounds. It also makes it harder for a clear winner to emerge quickly.

There are other variations of Snip Snap Snorum that resemble Jig, like Schnipp-Schnapp-Schnurr-Burr-Basilorum played in Germany. In this version, the round doesn’t end with Kings. Instead, players continue by playing the low Ace of the suit, followed by the 2 of the same suit, then the 3, and so on. The game goes on until a player is unable to continue the sequence.
