Hang Ten: Create the Lowest Value Card Layout
Welcome to Hang Ten! I’m here to introduce you to a fun variation of the classic card game Golf called Hang Ten. In this version, we add an exciting twist to the gameplay. Instead of discarding all the cards into one single pile, each player gets their very own discard pile. Plus, you can even take the top card from your opponent’s discard pile. How cool is that?
The objective of Hang Ten is simple: you need to make a card layout with the lowest possible score. Ideally, you want a negative score. Each card has a point value, which we’ll go over in a bit.
Let’s take a closer look at the rules:
Number of Players:
Hang Ten is designed for 4 to 6 players. Gather your friends and get ready to have some fun!
Number of Cards:
In this game, you’ll need four standard 52-card decks. That’s a whole lot of cards to play with!
Rank of Cards:
Now, let’s talk about the point values of each card:
- Ace: Worth 1 point
- Numbered Cards: Worth their face value (e.g., a 2 of diamonds is worth 2 points)
- Jack, Queen, and King: Each worth 10 points
But wait, there’s more! There are a few exceptions to these rules, so listen up:
If you happen to have a set of three cards with the same rank, such as three 6s, they cancel each other out and have a value of zero. Isn’t that neat?
Additionally, if you manage to collect three cards of the same suit in a row, like the 3, 4, and 5 of hearts, they also cancel each other out and have a value of zero. So keep an eye out for those special combinations!
Are you ready to dive into the exciting world of Hang Ten? Put your card skills to the test and see if you can create the lowest value card layout. I guarantee you’ll have a blast!
- A pair of cards, like two Queens, scores 0 points.
- A group of four cards with the same rank scores -10 points.
THE DEAL
First, we randomly choose a dealer. Then, the decks are shuffled and the dealer hands out 10 cards to each player. But here’s the twist: you can’t look at your cards! Instead, you place them face-down in two rows of five, creating a 5×2 layout in front of you. After that, the dealer takes the remaining cards, places them face-down in a pile, and flips over the top card, putting it next to the deck. Now it’s time to reveal some cards. Each player turns over two cards from their layout, but there’s a catch – you can’t choose cards that are next to each other vertically or in the same row.
THE PLAY
When we play this game, I’ll go first because I’m sitting to the left of the dealer. To start my turn, I need to draw a card from the deck that’s face-down. After I look at the card I drew, I can choose to use it to replace one of the cards in my own layout. It doesn’t matter if the cards I’m replacing are face-down or face-up – I can replace both.
When I replace a card, I put the one I took out in my discard pile, which is above my layout. Once I finish replacing cards, my turn is done, and it’s the next player’s turn – the one sitting to my left.
This process keeps going, moving in a clockwise direction. Each player takes their turn by drawing a card, replacing cards in their layout, and discarding. If I want, I can take the top card from my opponent’s discard pile, but only if it’s the top card. The card in the center, however, can’t be replaced until the next time we deal.
When you play the game, your goal is to create the lowest possible value layout using the card values listed above.
The Endgame and Scoring
The game continues until one player has all 10 cards facing up in their layout. Once this happens, each player gets one final turn and then the game ends. At this point, all players reveal the remaining cards in their layout and calculate their total score.
After scoring, the cards are shuffled and dealt again, with the deal moving to the left. A complete game consists of 10 deals, and the player with the lowest overall score after 10 deals is the winner!
Once this is done, cards are shuffled and re-dealt, and the deal moves to the left. A full game has 10 deals and the player with the lowest cumulative score after 10 deals wins the game!
