Introducing Finnish Ristiklappi!
Hey there, have you heard about Finnish Ristiklappi? It’s a super cool card game that you can play with 4 people. You form two teams of 2 players each, and you sit opposite your partner. The goal of the game is to be the first team to earn 7 game points. Exciting, right?
Now, let’s talk about how you can earn those game points. Winning rounds is the key! To win a round, you have to score more points than the other team. And how do you score points? Well, you win valuable cards during tricks, and those cards give you points. Simple, huh?
Ready, Set, Setup!
First things first, we need to determine who the first dealer is. You can do this by choosing someone randomly, and then the dealer position will pass to the left for each new deal. It’s like a game of musical chairs!
Now, the dealer will shuffle the deck like a pro and deal 6 cards to each player. Nice and fair. The rest of the cards will go face down in the middle and become the stockpile. That’s where all the excitement lies!
Powerful Cards are the Key
In Finnish Ristiklappi, you don’t rank the cards like in other games. Instead, you just compare if one card has the same rank as another. However, each card has a specific value that determines how many points you can score. Aces are worth 11 points, kings are worth 4 points, queens are worth 3 points, jacks are worth 2 points, 10s are worth 10 points, and the rest of the cards have no value. In total, each round offers a maximum of 120 points for players to earn.
HOW TO PLAY
When we play this game, it all starts with the player to the left of the dealer. They make the first move, and then we go around the table in a clockwise direction. Each of us plays one card during a round. The cool thing is that we can play any card we want, no restrictions. It’s like we’re all free to choose! But here’s the catch: the trick is won by the last card played if it has the same rank as the first card. Let me give you an example so it’s crystal clear. Let’s say I play a 2, you play a 5, another player plays a 2, and then someone else plays a 4. In this scenario, the person who played the second 2 wins the trick. Got it? Awesome! The winner of a trick gets to lead the next one.
Now, here’s a little secret I’ll share with you: we all want to win tricks that have valuable cards! So when you’re playing your card, make sure to keep that in mind. It’s like a strategy game within a game, and it’s super exciting!
After each player plays their card, we get to refill our hands. We do this by drawing cards from the stock until we have 5 cards in our hand again. But here’s the thing – when the stock runs out, there are no more cards to draw. Don’t worry though, the fun doesn’t stop! We can still keep playing with the cards we have in our hands. It’s like we’re making the most of what we’ve got!
In the game of trick, there’s one rule that we must all follow: you can’t lead 4 tricks in a row with cards of the same rank.
While there are still cards left in the stock, you have a choice. You can lead with the top card of the stock, which means revealing it and playing it to the trick. Once you make this decision, you can’t change your mind. If you do, you won’t get to draw a card afterward, and you’ll still have 5 cards in your hand.
Cleaning Up
There’s another rule that comes into play and affects the game. If either team manages to win a queen before the stock of cards is empty, they’ll have to clean up with a trick after all the cards in the stock have been used up.
When it comes to cleaning in the game of cards, there’s a rule that says a player must win a king in a trick only after the stock of cards has run out. So it’s against the rules to play all four kings before the stock is emptied. If three kings have already been played and there’s still cards left in the stock, the player with the last remaining king must wait until the stock is depleted before they can play it. And here’s an interesting twist – if a trick is won by a queen, no king can be used to clean it. If someone plays a king to a trick led by a queen, it’s considered null and void. It’s important to note that after the stock is emptied, it’s possible for one, both, or neither of the teams to need to clean.
SCORING
Once all the tricks have been played and won, the players will tally up the scores of their tricks.
Scoring is just the beginning. Winning takes it to a whole new level. If my team scores 61 points or more and we play fair, we earn a game point. But if both teams score exactly 60 points and both are clean, then no game point is awarded.
Now, when it comes to losing, there are different levels of embarrassment at stake. If my team only scores 4 to 59 points in a clean game, it’s an honorable loss. But if we score more than 4 points and play dirty, it’s a shameful piss game loss. And if we have less than 4 points and no queens, we’ve lost a lappi game. But nothing beats losing all our tricks and having a score of 0 in a kortiton lappi game. That’s worse than a lappi. And if our only point card is a queen, we’ve hit rock bottom with a piss lappi loss. It’s the worst and most humiliating defeat.
The Game’s End
Everything comes to a close when a team accumulates 7 game points. The first team to achieve this wins the game.
