If you are the investigator or the witness, your goal is to identify the murderer before the game ends. It’s not just about guessing who the murderer is; you also need to figure out the murder weapon and any evidence left behind at the scene. As a witness, you need to be careful not to be killed by the murderer or their accomplice. In fact, it’s in your best interest to subtly divert attention towards the real murderer.
Deception in Hong Kong is a game of strategy and deduction. It challenges your ability to analyze clues and make informed decisions. Can you solve the mystery and catch the murderer? Take on the challenge and find out!
If you’re playing the part of the murderer or the accomplice, your goal is to avoid getting caught and prosecuted. If the murderer does get caught, there is still one chance for you to win if there’s a witness in the game. If you eliminate the witness, both the murderer and the accomplice go free. As the accomplice, your objective is to divert attention away from the murderer by any means necessary.
ROLES
Forensic Scientist (1): As the forensic scientist, I will guide the other players in the game and provide clues to catch the murderer. I win with the investigators, but I must remain unbiased. I know the identities of everyone else and the details of the murder, but I’m not allowed to hint at or reveal the answer through any gestures, verbal cues, or eye contact.
Hey there! Did you know that in this game called Murderer, there are two types of players? I’ll explain it to you!
First, let’s talk about the Murderer. This person is trying their hardest not to get caught. They choose how they commit the murder and also leave behind some clues. It’s their job to throw off the other players and make them think someone else is the guilty party. The Murderer can be pretty sneaky, and even if people start suspecting them, they won’t lose the game until the others figure out both their chosen method of murder and the specific evidence they left behind. So, it’s a real challenge to catch them!
Now, let’s move on to the Investigators. There are eight of them! The goal for the Investigators is to solve the mystery. They win if at least one of them can accurately guess both the method of murder and the evidence left behind by the killer. They receive clues from a forensic scientist, which should help them crack the case. But here’s the catch – the tricky thing is that the Murderer and their partner in crime, the Accomplice, are among the Investigators themselves! They’ll do everything they can to steer their fellow Investigators in the wrong direction.
Here’s another important thing to know: each Investigator only gets one chance to accuse someone of being the Murderer. So they need to carefully consider all the information they’ve gathered before they make their final call.
Isn’t this game intriguing? It’s a battle of wits, where the Murderer tries to outsmart the Investigators who are hot on their trail. Are you up for the challenge? I bet you are!
In this game called Deception, there are two crucial roles: the Accomplice and the Witness.
The Accomplice’s goal is to either prevent the murderer from being caught or help the murderer kill the Witness. They will do whatever it takes to divert the investigators’ attention away from the crime.
The Witness, on the other hand, aims to correctly identify the murderer, as well as gather evidence and find the means to prove their guilt. The Witness knows who the murderer and accomplice are, but not their specific roles. Their plan is to subtly guide the investigators towards the culprits, careful not to get caught and killed themselves, as that would allow the murderer to escape justice.
SETUP
The game setup involves three essential parts: the scene, the roles, and the badge tokens.
Scene
Alright, let’s get things rolling. First off, we gotta gather all those event scene tiles and put ’em back in the box. Those tiles with the blue text and paragraph info? Yeah, save those for later, we’ll use ’em in another round.
Now, time to shuffle the red clue cards and the blue means cards. Each player gets four of each stack. Place ’em face up in front of you, with the text side facing the other players.
Take a moment and check out everyone’s means and clue cards. Just ignore any fancy art on ’em, it’s all just for looks. Only the text should be guiding our thoughts and opinions as investigators.
Roles
Now, for the next step, we gotta deal with those role cards. How many investigators we got? Depends on the number of players.
If you’re playing with 5 to 4 people, you’ll need one forensic scientist, one murderer, and 2 to 3 investigators. If you have 6 to 12 players, you’ll need one forensic scientist, one murderer, and you can optionally have an Accomplice and a witness. The rest of the players will be investigators. Just remember, you can only have a witness if there’s an accomplice, but you can play the accomplice without the witness.
Once you have the right role cards for the game, shuffle them up and hand them out randomly to each player. It’s a good idea to start with the forensic scientist in the beginning. After the cards are dealt, the forensic scientist reveals themselves, but everyone else keeps their roles a secret.
So here’s what happens next: I, the forensic scientist, will get rid of my clue and means cards. Then, I’ll shuffle the evidence tiles but set aside the green and purple ones for now. The rest of the tiles will be face down in a pile next to me. Oh, and I’ll also have the rule book handy, just in case I need to refer to it.
Badge Tokens
Once everything else is ready, it’s time to hand out the badge tokens. Everyone, except me, the forensic scientist, gets a token. Make sure to place the tokens where everyone can see them, right in front of each player. These tokens let everyone know that a player hasn’t made an attempt to solve the crime yet.
GAMEPLAY
Let me walk you through how the game is played. It’s actually quite fascinating! There are different phases, each one adding to the suspense and excitement. First, we have the crime phase, where the murderer gets to choose the evidence against themselves. It’s like they’re leaving a trail of breadcrumbs, but only the keenest detectives will be able to follow it.
The real action begins in the investigation phase. This is where all investigators, including the witness if they’re available, put on their detective hats and start searching for clues. It’s like a puzzle, with each new piece of information bringing them closer to solving the mystery. The tension in the room is palpable as everyone tries to outsmart each other.
Once the investigation is in full swing, it’s time for the big reveal: solving the crime. This is the last chance for investigators to use their badge tokens and make an accusation. It’s the ultimate test of their deductive skills and instincts. Will they be able to point the finger at the right person and bring justice to the table? The pressure is on!
Finally, we have the phase where the case is closed and the files are put away. This is the endgame, where everything comes together. Here, it’s a battle of wits between the investigators and witness, against the cunning murderer and their accomplice. The stakes couldn’t be higher as both sides vie for victory.
So, you see, the gameplay in this game is truly captivating. It’s a thrilling journey of mystery and deduction, where every decision counts. Are you ready to test your detective skills and crack the case?
The Crime Game
First things first, the crime takes place. I, the forensic scientist, will give you all a signal to close your eyes. Then, I’ll instruct the murderer and, if there’s one, the accomplice to open their eyes.
During this time, the murderer and accomplice will introduce themselves to each other. Once that’s done, the murderer will select one clue card and one means card from the set of eight cards in front of them. These cards will serve as evidence against them. As the forensic scientist, I’ll make a mental note of which cards they choose. After this, I will ask the murderer and accomplice to close their eyes.
Next, I’ll instruct the witness to open their eyes, if there is one. Without revealing their identities, I will point to both the murder and the accomplice. Then, I’ll ask the witness to close their eyes once again.
Once everyone is told to open their eyes, the investigation phase begins. This is when all players can start gathering clues and trying to solve the crime.
Making Accusations
During the investigation, you have the opportunity to make accusations using the badge token. If you need more information on how to do this, you can refer to the section called “Solving the Crime.”
The Investigation Process
The investigation is the most important part of the game and it is divided into three rounds. The Forensic Scientist controls the pace of the game, deciding how quickly to give out clues. Each round consists of two phases: evidence collection and presentation. While it is possible for the game to end early if an investigator correctly guesses all the necessary information, it will always end after the third round concludes.
Collecting Evidence
So, here’s the deal: when we’re trying to solve a murder mystery with a bunch of investigators, we start by collecting evidence. The forensic scientist takes the lead, and they begin by examining the purple evidence card. This card gives us crucial information about how the victim was murdered – it’s like a starting point for our investigation.
Next, the forensic scientist looks through a bunch of green evidence cards. These cards represent potential locations where the murder might have happened. The forensic scientist carefully chooses the one that seems to fit the murder best.
But wait, there’s more! We also need to bring in four brown evidence cards from a different pile, making sure they’re all nicely shuffled. These cards add further clues and details to our investigation.
Alright, now it’s time to spread out all these evidence cards in the center of our table. This is where things get interesting. The forensic scientist can start placing bullet markers on each tile, but there’s a catch – they can only place one marker per tile. Oh, and the marker has to go in one of the six designated spots on the tile.
So, with all these pieces of the puzzle in place, our investigation can truly begin. Let’s find that killer!
As a forensic scientist, I have the freedom to take as much time as I want to place the markers on the tiles. Once I place the first marker, all investigators can start discussing their thoughts about the evidence. However, once I place the sixth marker, this stage of the round ends. Investigators get a few more moments to discuss, and then the next stage begins.
The Presentation
After the sixth marker is placed and we finish discussing all the evidence, each player will have a chance to present their thoughts on specific clues or methods. We go in order, starting with the player to the left of the forensic scientist and ending with the person on their right. During someone else’s presentation, nobody can talk or defend themselves. These presentations usually last around 30 seconds, but the exact time depends on what we agree upon beforehand.
Once I’ve completed the initial investigation, there’s always a second round waiting for me. In this round, I get to dive deeper into the evidence. As a forensic scientist, my first task is to draw a new brown evidence tile. This tile will replace one of the existing tiles, but it can’t replace the purple or green ones. Once I’ve made the switch, I place a marker on the evidence I want to present to the investigators.
Now it’s time for the investigators to discuss the new evidence. They’ll share their thoughts on what it could mean for the murder and the clues we have on the table. It’s an important moment, as this new evidence could hold the key to solving the case.
Once we finish the second presentation, we’ll move on to the next phase. Just like before, we’ll follow the same instructions. After everyone has presented their evidence, the game will come to an end.
Cracking the Case
While we’re investigating, you have the option to try and solve the murder at any time. All you have to do is exchange your badge token for the chance to accuse a player, choose a murder method, and provide an evidence clue. If you get everything right, the forensic scientist will confirm it, and the game will be over.
In this game, the detectives and the witness are engaged in a high-stakes battle. The detectives will emerge as winners if they can successfully identify the witness. However, it’s not an easy task. The forensic scientist will only confirm or deny if the evidence presented is correct. And here’s the catch – if the detectives make an incorrect accusation, they won’t receive any further clues.
What adds to the thrill is that each detective gets only one chance to make an accusation during the game. So they must choose wisely and seize the opportunity when they feel confident in their choice.
Remember, if any detective doesn’t make an accusation by the end of the third round of the investigation phase, they forfeit their chance to do so.
How the Game Ends
The game concludes after the third round of the investigation phase, regardless of whether or not the murderer has been identified. Here are the possible outcomes:
Closing the Case
So, here’s how it goes down in the game: by the end, either the investigators nab the murderer or the murderer slips away. If the murderer manages to evade the investigators, well, guess what? The murderer and their partner in crime win. But if the investigators crack the case and find the two key pieces of evidence, there’s a twist. The murderer gets one last chance to come out on top. They can consult with their partner and make a guess as to which character the witness might be. If they’re right, it’s game over, and the murderer and accomplice claim victory. But if the witness is still kicking, that means everyone – the investigators and the forensic scientist – wins the game.
