BUDDHA’S FOLLY

Hey there! Welcome to Buddha’s Folly, a super fun card game where the goal is to create the best hand possible by accepting or rejecting cards. It’s a game that’s perfect for 2 to 8 players, so gather your friends and get ready for some excitement!

Now, before we dive into the game, let me give you some important details. We’ll be using a standard deck of 52 cards, and the ranks are as follows: A is the highest, followed by K, Q, J, and so on, all the way down to 2.

Just a heads up, Buddha’s Folly falls under the casino/gambling category, so it’s intended for adult players. Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty!

INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHA’S FOLLY

Are you ready for some strategic poker action? Buddha’s Folly is a really cool poker variant that’s popular in homes and gambling venues all across the United States. It’s a game that requires patience and experience, so be prepared to show off your skills!

In Buddha’s Folly, we use a match pot betting system, just like in the game called Guts. This means that things can get pretty intense, so buckle up for an exciting ride!

THE PLAY

When we play this game, we all chip in a certain amount of money, which we call the ante, before we even start.

Then the dealer gives each of us five cards. We get to look at our own cards, but we have to keep them a secret from everyone else. Now, here’s the interesting part. The dealer starts by flipping over the top card of the deck and showing it to everyone. Then, the dealer offers the card to the person sitting on their left or right. This person has two choices:

  • If they like the card, they can take it and add it to their hand. In order to do that, though, they have to give up one of their other cards. The dealer then takes that discarded card and offers it to the next person.
  • If they don’t want the card, they can pass it to the next person on their left or right.

When it’s my turn, I have a choice. I can either accept or reject the card that’s being offered to me. And the same goes for the next player in line. We keep going around the table, taking turns and making our decisions, until every player has rejected a card.

Showdown

Now comes the moment of truth. It’s time for all of us to decide if we’re staying “in” or if we’re “out”. We can do this all at once or in a specific order that the dealer chooses at the beginning of the game. Once we’ve made our choices, it’s time to reveal our hands. The player with the best hand, according to the rankings we learned about here, wins the pot. But if we stayed in the game and didn’t win, we still have to contribute to the pot for the next round.

It’s worth noting that if all the players try to drop out at the same time, the player with the highest ranking hand will have to pay for everyone in the next round.
