Barony game rules – how to play barony

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to the World of Barony!

In the kingdom of Barony, I step into the role of a baron, venturing out to conquer new lands and expand my kingdom. With each move, I find myself engulfed in a thrilling quest to become the next king. How exciting!

Getting Started

Alright, here’s how we set up the game: each player is handed a set of nine tiles. These tiles will serve as the building blocks for our cities. Now, let’s get creative! We’ll randomly place these tiles on the board to construct our very own unique city. Any leftover tiles can safely be returned to the box. And oh, don’t forget about the resource tokens! We’ll place them next to the board to form our resource bank.

We each pick a color to represent ourselves in this exciting journey. Along with our chosen color, we’ll collect a reference sheet, 14 villages, 7 knights, 2 strongholds, and 5 cities, all in the same splendid color.

Once it’s your turn, you’ll get to place a city and a knight on the board. The order of play goes clockwise, so the first player will go first, followed by the next player, and so on.

If you’re the first player, you’ll place one city and one knight on the board. The next player will do the same, but the final player has a special rule. Instead of just one city and one knight, they get to place three cities and a knight in each city.

This continues in a clockwise fashion until every player has placed all their cities and knights on the board.

As for keeping score, start by placing the counters on the zero space of the scorepad. The youngest player gets to decide who goes first. The first player will collect the First Player token, and the youngest player can choose themselves if they want.

How to Play

When I play the game, we take turns going clockwise. During my turn, I have a few different things I can do: I can get a noble tile, go on an expedition, start a new city, build something, move my knights, or recruit more knights.

If I decide to recruit, I can put up to two knights in a city space of my choice. If the space is next to a lake, I can put three knights there instead. But if I don’t have any knights left, I can’t recruit. I can also choose to move my knights and transfer them to a space next to where they currently are.

When I play this game, I can construct things by replacing my knights on the board and using resource tokens to build. If I want to create a new city, I can replace one of my villages with a city from my reserve. This will earn me ten Victory Points.

To complete an expedition, I need to remove one of my knights and place it in a space on the edge of the board.

If I want to earn a noble title, I have to discard fifteen Resource tokens. It’s important to keep in mind that the game continues until one player becomes a Duke. During each turn, every player chooses an action.

END OF GAME

The game ends when a player becomes a Duke. The current round continues until it ends, so that each player gets the same number of turns. When the game is over, we tally up our points. The player with the most Victory Points becomes the King and wins the game!
