Hey there! If you’re new to this super complex game, I totally recommend trying a few practice rounds first. It’s important to get the hang of the basics before diving into a full game. In my experience, it usually takes about 2 hours to complete a game, but for beginners, it might take a bit longer.

I gotta warn you, though, this game can be pretty ruthless. If your economy doesn’t grow fast enough, famine and pollution will start to pile up, and that can lead to a slow and painful defeat. Ouch!

Here’s a little tip to make things easier: when you’re starting out, you might wanna skip the Famine and Pollution phases in your first few games. This will make the game a lot more manageable (but still challenging) and give you a chance to learn all about the different buildings and strategies. It’s like a crash course in being awesome!

If you dive right into a full game without any practice, you and your entire crew might end up six feet under! Yikes!

Let’s Talk Strategy

Always make sure to have a woodcutter (or another way to get wood). Don’t you ever, ever, EVER run out of wood! You need one wood to build either a woodcutter or a market (which will let you trade for whatever you need, assuming you have other goods). If you do run out of wood and don’t have a woodcutter or a market, the only way to get wood is for another player with a manned market to take pity on you and trade you one.

You start the game with six wood. In my group, we usually spend the initial wood like this:

– Two wood for two cart shops (needed to build during the fields phase)

– One wood for a granary (to avoid starving for a turn or two)

– One wood for an explorer (if there are explorer chits within two hexes of your city)

4. Avoid mass starvation: Running out of food can be disastrous in Antiquity. While having a few graves is not the end of the world, it’s important to have enough food to prevent mass starvation. Consider building a granary and increasing your food producers to keep up with the rising famine level.

• Starting out, it’s important to have enough storage in your city. If you’re worshipping San Christofori or Santa Maria, you’re all set. But if not, you need to make sure you have enough room to store your goods. If you have extra space, it might be a good idea to build a building now, even if you don’t need it right away.
• On the other hand, don’t feel pressured to spend your resources just because you have them. It’s usually a good idea to keep your cart shops busy delivering wood to build producers in the fields, but there’s no rush to build a city building until you actually need it. You might find that you need the resource or the building space for something else in the near future.
• #image.jpgWhen you get stone on your first turn, it’s a great opportunity to build a cathedral on your second turn. This is especially useful if you plan to honor San Christofori or Santa Maria because they allow you to store unlimited goods in your cathedral. If you don’t need an explorer or a cathedral with storage, you can use the wood to build a storage unit. With just one piece of wood, you can build a storage unit of any size, as long as it’s a rectangle. We’ve found that a 6-square storage unit, which is made up of 3 storage pieces, is usually enough.
• During the city phase, it’s important to allocate resources for both the city and the fields. For example, when I place a worker on a cart shop, I also put the resources he’ll need on top of him. This way, I won’t accidentally use them to build something in the city.
• When you’re ready to start your first city, remember that you have flexibility in placing your workers. While meadow land is pleasant, it’s not as crucial as the other types of terrain, since your wood area will soon transform into meadow.

Well, it provides you with not only food (fish) without the need for a food seed, but also two different kinds of luxuries. Unlike mountains, water can be repurposed between uses, so the same pond can produce fish for one fisherman and pearls for the next.
• When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to get caught up in expanding your territory without thinking about how to actually win the game. It’s crucial to have a clear winning condition in mind and focus on achieving it. Don’t overextend yourself by producing too much. Instead, produce just enough to secure victory.

• Some Saints have proven to work particularly well with certain combinations of buildings. For instance, San Giorgio pairs nicely with Stables, San Nicolo goes hand in hand with the Faculty of Philosophy, and San Christofori complements the Faculty of Biology. Given the price of buildings, it’s crucial to carefully select which other structures to invest in!
