In the early 1950s, a director named Albert Lamorisse, who was known for his award-winning movie “The Red Balloon,” invented the board game Risk. Originally called “La Conqueste du Monde,” which means Conquest of the World, the game was later modified for simplicity by Jean-Rene Vernes, a game manufacturer in France.

After Lamorisse offered the game to Miro, a French game manufacturer, Parker Brothers, an American company with a good relationship with Miro, brought the game to the United States. Parker Brothers made some changes to the game, including modifying the appearance and adding cards to speed up gameplay. They also changed the name to Risk: the Continental Game.

The overall layout of the first version remained largely the same, but the playing pieces had a different appearance. Instead of wooden cubes, they were rectangular.
