Welcome to the Climate Change Game!
Our world is undergoing a major transformation. The climate is shifting, and the consequences are dire. The once lush and abundant land is now suffering, with resources dwindling and entire cities being swallowed by nature.
In response to this crisis, we, the Settlers of Catan, have made a bold decision. We will explore new territories and embark on a journey to colonize new lands.
Getting Started
The board is set up just like you see above.
In addition to the basic set, you’ll need enough chips (known as “desolation”) and two special victory points.
Foundation Phase
You’ll start by building two settlements, like usual, but this time you can only build them on the northern island, also known as the “home island.” And one of your settlements must be built on the coast.
Game Play
The Pirate isn’t involved in this game.
Whenever a hex loses its value (I’ll explain more about this later), the robber goes back to the desert.
When you build a settlement or a city, you’ll move the robber back to the desert and pick two hexes on the island. You’ll then lower the number chips on these hexes by one level (for example, you’d change a 6 to a 5, or a 9 to a 10).
When you’re choosing these hexes, you’ll need to follow these rules:
In the game, there are a few rules to keep in mind when it comes to hexes. Let me break it down for you:
1. It’s best to choose a hex where you already have a settlement or city. That way, you can make the most of it!
2. If possible, try to devalue hexes with settlements or cities. Only when all those fields are “abandoned” will the undeveloped hexes lose their value.
3. If a hex with a value of 2 or 12 needs to be devalued, it will become a desert. You’ll need to flip the hex over and remove the number chit.
4. Watch out for isolated areas! If all the hexes around a road, settlement, or city are desolate, those buildings are considered “isolated.” They will be removed from the board and given back to their owners for reuse. Keep in mind that roads, settlements, and cities in coastal areas won’t become isolated, but they will no longer generate resources.
That’s the lowdown on hexes in the game. Now, let’s move on to the exciting New World!
In the game, there’s a cool feature: if you’re the first person to construct two settlements in the “New World” (the southern island), you get a Special victory point. Pretty neat, right?
And guess what? You know that super cool feeling you get when you build a city? Well, if you’re the first one to build a city in the “New World,” you also get a Special victory point. It’s like icing on the cake!
It’s interesting to note that the world in the game is actually round! Can you believe it? Here’s a mind-blowing fact: the water on the hexes at the northern and southern edges of the board forms one hex when you put them together. That’s some clever design right there.
Now, Let’s Talk About the End of the Game
Now, this is where things get exciting. The first player who manages to rack up a total of 12 or more victory points during their turn wins the game. They’re the ultimate champion! So, who’s up for the challenge of reaching that magical number?
