Newton Tiles
Newton Tiles, also known as Newton’s Cradle, have a fascinating science behind them. Have you ever seen those desk toys with a series of metal balls suspended in a row? When you pull back and release one of the balls, it swings forward and hits the others, which then swing back and forth in a mesmerizing motion. This intriguing display of physics is called Newton Tiles, and it never fails to captivate onlookers.
The concept behind Newton Tiles is based on Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion. These fundamental laws describe the relationship between an object’s motion and the forces acting upon it. Newton Tiles demonstrate the principle of conservation of momentum and conservation of energy.
Let me break it down for you. When you pull back one of the balls and let it go, it gains potential energy. As it swings forward and strikes the next ball in line, some of its energy transfers to that ball. At the same time, the first ball loses energy as it slows down and swings back. This energy transfer continues throughout the row of balls, creating a mesmerizing back-and-forth motion that seems to go on forever.
One interesting thing to note about Newton Tiles is that the number of balls affects the motion. If you have five balls, for example, the middle ball acts as a sort of mediator, transferring energy to the outer balls. But if you have an odd number of balls, like three or seven, the outermost balls will swing freely, while the middle ball remains relatively motionless.
Newton Tiles serve as a visual representation of the laws of motion, and they offer a captivating way to explore and understand these principles. They also make for a great desk toy or gift for science enthusiasts of all ages.
So, if you’re looking for an engaging way to learn about physics or simply enjoy the mesmerizing motion of Newton Tiles, give them a try. You’ll be amazed by the elegance and beauty of this scientific phenomenon, all contained within a simple row of metal balls.
Specialization tiles offer you a unique advantage of either an Income tile or a Development tile. It’s like having a secret weapon in your arsenal!
So here’s the deal: if you’re on the Technology track and one of your students or your marker makes a move onto a Specialization tile, you can snag the matching Income or Development tile. Take that tile and place it on your Study board – and by the way, a tile with a “?” means you can pick any kind you want, but once you choose, you’re stuck with it. No do-overs!
Development Tiles
Development tiles are like little symbols that you add to the Basic Action shown on the tile. They’re important because they boost the value of that action every time you use it. So collect as many of these bad boys as you can!
So, when I get a Development tile as part of my Specialization, I can add it to one of the empty spaces in the second row of my desk. That’s where it goes.
But here’s the thing: if all five of my desk’s drawers are already full, no worries! I can just take out one of the Development tiles I placed earlier in the game and put the new one in its place.
Get Extra Benefits with Income and Medicine Tiles
With income tiles, you get a little something extra during each round’s income phase. It’s like a bonus that adds up over time. You get 2 victory points, 2 coins, and 1 potion token!
Now, let me tell you about the Medicine Income tile. This tile can earn you even more victory points! The number of cities you’ve visited with the medicine symbol determines how many points you’ll receive: either 1 or 3 victory points. It’s a sweet deal!
Hey there! Let me explain how the Income tiles work when you play the game. When you receive an Income tile, which happens when you choose a Specialization tile, you need to find a free space on your bookshelf and place it there. Your bookshelf has five spaces specifically for income tiles. However, if all five spaces are already filled, no worries! You can simply replace one of the Income tiles you already placed earlier in the game. It’s as simple as that!

City Tiles
City tiles are where the magic happens! When you put a Travel cube on a city tile (after your Scientist moves or because of a Master Card, check out page 16), you get a special bonus right away.
Remember, you only get the bonus if you put a Travel cube on a city tile after your Scientist moves or because of a Master Card. So make sure to grab those bonuses whenever you can!

Welcome to the City of Medicine: If this is your first time visiting the City of Medicine, grab the Medicine Income tile from the Map and place it in one of the income slots on your bookshelf with the 1 VP side facing up. It’s your first step to earning Victory Points!
If this is your second visit to the City of Medicine, flip over the Medicine Income tile on your bookshelf so that the 3 PV side is facing up. It means you’re making progress and getting closer to more Victory Points!
Objective Tiles
Objective tiles are special tiles that allow you to earn Victory Points at the end of the game. You can earn them by meeting certain conditions. You’ll find Objective tiles on the Map, at the end of the Work track, and at the end of each of the 4 paths on the Technology track.
To activate an Objective space on the Map or at the end of a track, you need to have the 4 Volumes required next to the space. Once you meet the requirement, you can unlock the space and start earning more Victory Points!
When you reach a tile with an Objective and you have one of your own pieces on it, whether it’s a Travel cube, a Marker, or a Student, you trigger that Objective. This means that at the end of the game, you will earn Victory Points based on the requirements specified on the tile.
When the game is over, you will earn one victory point (VP) for every coin that remains in your supply. It’s essential to keep in mind that the maximum number of VPs you can receive is 14, even if you have more than 14 coins.
At the end of the game, you will earn 2 victory points for every Potion token you have remaining in your supply. You can earn a maximum of 14 victory points this way, even if you have more than 7 Potion tokens.
Did you know that at the end of the game, you can earn Victory Points (VPs) based on the number of Bonus tokens you have left? It’s true! For each Bonus token in your supply, you receive 2 VPs. But here’s the catch – the maximum number of VPs you can earn is 14, even if you have more than 7 Bonus tokens.
When you play the game, you earn 3 VPs (victory points) for each University you visit. These are the University tiles that have one of your travel cubes on them. The most VPs you can earn from this is 15, even if you manage to visit more than 5 universities.
During the game, I earn Victory Points by visiting Ancient Land. Each time I place one of my Travel cubes on an Ancient Land tile, I earn 5 VPs. The more Ancient Lands I visit, the more VPs I earn.
If your Students reach the end of the Technology track during the game, you’ll earn 4 Victory Points for each of them. Just imagine – all that hard work paying off! It’s like a little victory parade right in your classroom. So, keep an eye on those little tech enthusiasts and guide them to the finish line. The final spaces on the track, which you can find on page 6, are the ones you should aim for. Once your Students conquer those spaces, the Victory Points will be yours. You’ll be one step closer to victory yourself.
If you played any Master cards during the game, you will receive 4 VPs for each one.

If you placed Bookshelf tiles on your bookshelf during the game, you’ll earn 4 VPs for every 3 tiles. It’s a simple way to score points and showcase your impressive book collection.
If you have 3 different Volumes on your Action cards and Master cards at the end of the game, you’ll get 5 Victory Points. This includes the cards in your hand and the ones you played on your desk. However, the Volumes you placed under your desk don’t count. You can earn a maximum of 15 Victory Points, even if you have more than 3 sets of 3 different Volumes. Just remember that Potion tokens can’t replace the Volumes needed for this Objective.
When the game is over, you’ll earn 3 VPs for each pair of Action cards you have. That includes the ones you have in your hand and the ones you played on your desk, as long as it’s not a Starting Action card. However, any Action cards placed under your desk won’t count. You can earn a maximum of 15 VPs from this, even if you have more than 5 pairs of Action cards.
