Harry Potter UNO Game Rules
Hey there! I’m here to guide you through the exciting world of the Harry Potter UNO game. Are you ready to learn how to play? Let’s go!
First things first, you’ll need a deck of Harry Potter UNO cards. These cards are special because they feature iconic characters, spells, and symbols from the beloved Harry Potter series. The goal of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
To start, each player is dealt seven cards. The remaining cards are placed facedown in the center, forming the draw pile. The top card of the draw pile is turned face-up next to it, creating the discard pile. This card kickstarts the game!
Now, I know you’re eager to play your cards, but there are some rules to follow. You can only play a card if it matches the symbol, color, or number of the card on top of the discard pile. For instance, if the card on top is red, you can only play a red card.
But, wait! The Harry Potter UNO cards come with a twist. There are special cards that can change the course of the game. For example, the Sorting Hat card allows you to choose a new color, while the Spell card forces the next player to draw two extra cards.
Now, let’s talk about strategy. Sometimes it’s wise to hold onto cards and wait for the perfect moment to play them. Remember, the key is to get rid of all your cards before your opponents do!
What happens if you only have one card left? Well, you need to shout “UNO!” to let the other players know. If you forget to do so and another player catches you, you’ll have to draw two penalty cards. So be alert!
The game continues until one player has no cards left. That player is the winner! Congratulations, my friend!
Now that you know the rules, gather your friends for an epic Harry Potter UNO game. May the magic be with you!

The Goal of the Game
The goal of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards in each round and score points for the cards your opponents have left. The points from each round accumulate and the first player to reach 500 points wins.
Getting Started

- First, we all pick a card, and the person who gets the highest number is the one who deals. Don’t forget to count any card with a symbol as zero!
- The dealer gives each of us seven cards. Make sure you shuffle them up first!
- Next, take the rest of the cards and put them face down to create the draw pile.
- Now, flip over the top card from the draw pile and put it face up as the starting card for the discard pile.
Playing the Game
The game starts with the person on the left of the dealer.
When it’s your turn, you have to find a card from your hand that matches the card on top of the DISCARD pile. You can match it by number, color, or symbol.
For example, let’s say the card on the discard pile is a blue 7. You can put down a blue card or any color 7. Another option is to play a Wild card.
If you don’t have a card that matches the one on the discard pile, you have to pick a card from the DRAW pile. If the card you picked up can be played, you can put it down right away. Otherwise, it’s the next person’s turn.
You can also choose not to play a card from your hand. In that case, you have to draw a card from the DRAW pile. If the card you draw can be played, you can put it down on the same turn. But you can’t play any other card from your hand after drawing.

The Power of Action Cards
Let’s talk about the amazing game-changer that is the Action Card. These cards have the ability to turn the tides in any game of cards. They come in different forms, each with its own unique function. So, are you ready to dive into the world of Action Cards with me? Let’s go!
Draw Two Card
This card is a real game-changer. When you play it, the next player has to face the consequences – drawing not one, but TWO cards! On top of that, they miss their turn. Ouch! This card is a force to be reckoned with and can only be played on a matching color card or another Draw Two card. Its power is so immense that if it happens to be the first card turned over at the start of the game, the same rule applies. Double ouch!

Reverse Card: When you play this card, the game takes an unexpected turn. The direction of play, which usually goes from left to right, reverses. So, if the play was going to the left, it starts to go to the right, and vice versa. It’s like a surprising twist that keeps everyone on their toes.
You can only play the Reverse card if it matches the color of the previous card or if there is another Reverse card on the table. It’s a special card that requires a specific condition to be met before it can be played. If the Reverse card is the first card to be played, the dealer gets to go first, and then the play moves to the right instead of the left.
Skip Card: This card allows you to skip the next player’s turn. When you play it, the player next in line loses their chance to play. Just like the Reverse card, the Skip card can only be played if it matches the color of the previous card or if there is another Skip card already in play. If a Skip card is the first card to be played, the player to the left of the dealer is the one who gets skipped, and then the player to the left of that player starts the game.

Wild Card – When you play this card, you get to pick which color the game continues with (any color, even the one that was being played before the Wild card was played).
You can play a Wild card on your turn even if you have another card that you could play. If a Wild card is turned over at the start of the game, the person sitting to the left of the dealer chooses the color that the game continues with.

Wild Draw 4 Card – When you play this card, you get to choose the color that continues the game. Plus, the next player has to pick 4 cards from the draw pile and miss their turn.
But, here’s the catch! You can only play this card if you don’t have any other card in your hand that matches the color on the discard pile. However, it’s okay to play this card if you have a card with the same number or an Action Card.
If the Wild Draw 4 Card is revealed at the start of the game, put it back in the deck and choose another card.
Note: If you think someone played a Wild Draw 4 card on you when they actually had a matching card, you can question them about it. Here’s what happens if you decide to challenge them: The player you challenge must reveal their hand to you. If they are guilty, they have to draw the 4 cards instead of you. But if they are innocent, you have to draw the 4 cards and an additional 2 cards, making it a total of 6 cards for you!

Sorting Hat Wild Card – The Sorting Hat is a magical card that knows exactly where to put you – in Gryffindor! When you play this amazing card, pick one player and watch as they draw cards from the deck until they find a Gryffindor card.
But that’s not all – this card is also a wild card, which means the player who played it gets to choose the color that continues the game. If this card shows up at the very beginning, the person on the left of the dealer gets to select the starting color.
The Last Card
When you’re down to your second-to-last card, make sure to shout “UNO” (which means “one”) to let everyone know that you only have one card left. If you forget to say “UNO” and someone catches you before the next player takes a turn, you’ll have to draw two cards as a penalty.
Once a player gets rid of all their cards, the round ends. Points are tallied up (check out the scoring rules) and a new round begins.
When it’s the last round, and the card played is a Draw Two or a Wild Draw Four, the next player has to draw 2 or 4 cards respectively. Keep in mind that these cards count towards the final score.
If by the time the DRAW pile is empty, no player has gotten rid of all their cards, the DISCARD pile is shuffled, and the game continues.
Scoring
In each round, the first player to play all their cards earns points based on the cards left in their opponents’ hands:
- Number cards (0-9): Worth their face value
- Draw Two: 20 points
- Reverse: 20 points
- Skip: 20 points
- Wild: 50 points
- Wild Draw Four: 50 points
- Sorting Hat: 50 points
After tallying the points for the round, if no player has reached 500 points yet, reshuffle the cards and start a new round.
