  1. Let’s start by setting up our display. Place the 3 display sheets – reference sheet, time/monster tracker, and effort/resource tracker – in front of you.
  2. Now, let’s track our time and effort. Put a token on the “I” icon of your time tracker to show that we have 7 units of time. Place another token to indicate that we have 13 small efforts on our effort tracker. As for our resources, put tokens on “0” for each category (including Medium and Large Effort).
  3. Next, it’s time to choose a character. Select a character sheet and place it in your display. Don’t forget to put the other character sheets back in the box. To keep track of our character’s abilities, put a token on the leftmost space of their ability bar.
  4. We also need a weapon. Find the Bare Hands weapon sheet and place it in your display. The rest of the weapon sheets can be set aside in a face-up stack.

When it’s time to begin a game, we first need to set everything up. Here’s how:

  1. Shuffle the encounter cards and the skill cards separately, and place them face down with room next to each for a discard pile. The condition cards should be placed face-up in a deck without shuffling them.

The Travel Phase

During the Travel Phase, we’ll focus on getting ready for battle. We should take this time to search for supplies and rest up for the upcoming combat. However, we need to be careful not to take too long, or else we might get ambushed by a monster! Let’s follow these three steps:

Step 1: Preparation Step

How to play Unbroken Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! In this step, you have the freedom to take as many general actions as you’d like. Feel free to refer to your character sheet and skill cards for any additional actions you can take.

Each action you choose to take will require a certain amount of resources. If you don’t have enough resources, unfortunately, you won’t be able to carry out that action. However, don’t worry! You can still opt for travel actions or general actions, just not combat actions, at the moment.

General actions are super important! Scouting, in particular, provides you with valuable information about the upcoming fight, while weapon crafting is your best bet for dealing heavy damage to tougher monsters. It’s crucial to be well-prepared!

Discovering a monster through Scouting: If I use the Scout action during the preparation stage, I roll a six-sided die. Depending on the number rolled, I choose a monster from the corresponding level’s monster sheets.

I place the selected monster’s sheet in my play area. This reveals the monster, allowing me to see its strengths and weaknesses and prepare for the upcoming battle.

Once I have taken all the desired actions and have enough resources, I can move on to the next step. However, if taking an action depletes all my available time, I must proceed directly to the Ambush Step of the Battle Phase.

Step 2: Decision Step

In this step, it’s decision time: are you ready to face the monster? If you are, skip the rest of the Travel Phase and go straight to the Trickery Step of the Combat Phase. But if you feel like you need more time to get ready for the fight, then proceed to the Exploration Step.

Just a quick reminder: if you chose to “commit to next encounter” during a previous Exploration Step, you have to keep going with the Exploration Step.

Now let’s move on to Step 3: the Exploration Step. Here, you’ll reveal two cards from the encounter deck (although certain effects might change this number). Out of these two cards, you’ll choose one to deal with and put the others in the encounter discard pile. At this point, you have to decide whether you want to resolve the encounter or take a rest.

If you choose to resolve the encounter, be prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead. But if you’re not quite ready yet, you can take a break and gather your strength for the next round. It’s up to you to decide which path to take, but remember, the monster won’t wait forever.

When you find yourself in a situation, you can resolve it by using the effect on the card you choose. As you do this, you will spend and gain resources according to the instructions. This process is called the encounter effect.

Resting

To take a rest, you will receive a certain amount of small effort, which is equal to the time value on the card. Look for it in the upper right corner.

If you have previously resolved an encounter card that told you to “commit to next encounter,” you will reveal just one card. It doesn’t matter if there are other effects or changes – you must resolve the encounter. Resting instead of resolving is not an option. If you are unable to perform the exchange on a committed encounter (because you don’t have the necessary resources), you must discard it.

After you rest or have an encounter, move the token on your time resource bar based on the time value of the chosen encounter card. This shows how much time you spent. Then, put the card in the discard pile. For example, if you had 5 time and encountered a card with a time value of 2, you now have 3 time remaining.

If your available time reaches zero, that means your preparations took too long and the monster ambushed you. You will go directly to the Ambush Step of the Combat Phase.

End of Phase

If you were not ambushed in the Exploration Step, you will go back to the beginning of the Travel Phase and repeat the sequence: Preparation Step – Decision Step – Exploration Step. This will continue until you decide you are ready for combat or the monster ambushes you.

A game in progress

Combat Phase

Step 1A: Ambush Step

First things first, let’s see what monster awaits us in this level. If we haven’t revealed it yet, it’s time to do so now. I’ll roll a six-sided die and grab the monster marked with the number I rolled from the monster sheets for this level. This monster will be my opponent in battle.

Next, I need to reset the token on my time resource bar. I’ll move it to the space that corresponds to the Level icon for the next level. For example, if I’m currently on level III, I’ll move the token to the “IV” space. If I’m facing the final challenge on Level IV, I’ll remove the token from the Time resource bar. This means I’ve reached the end of my journey and it’s time for the ultimate showdown.

When you find yourself in a challenging situation with no time left, it’s called an ambush. In an ambush, the monster you’re facing may have a special effect that will come into play. After resolving the ambush effect, you’ll proceed to the Battle Step.

Remember: Even if you reveal the monster during the Travel Phase, it doesn’t prevent an ambush from happening. If your available time reaches zero, you will always be ambushed.

Not all monsters have Ambush effects. In some fortunate cases, there will be a “-” symbol, indicating that there is no effect. You got lucky and can proceed to the Battle Step without any hindrances. Knowing in advance that a monster won’t ambush you can give you more time for preparation, as you won’t have to worry about that threat.

Step 1B: Trickery Step

If the monster for this level hasn’t been revealed yet, reveal it now. Roll a six-sided die and select the monster sheet that matches the number you rolled from the sheets of monsters for your current level. Place the sheet on the table.

In your play area, you’ll find the monster you need to defeat. This is the monster that you’ll be going up against.

To start, reset the token on your time resource bar to the space that matches the level icon for the next level. For example, if you’re on level III, you would reset it to “IV”. If you’re on the final level (Level IV), remove the token from the Time resource bar. Congratulations, you’ve reached the final challenge of your journey!

Now, you have a choice. You can try to trick the monster and avoid a fight altogether, but it will cost you some trickery points. The trickery cost is listed on the monster sheet, but not all monsters can be tricked.

If you decide to pay the trickery cost, go to the Hunger Step. Keep in mind that if you choose this option, you won’t receive any rewards. On the other hand, if you choose to fight the monster, proceed to the Battle Step.

Battle Step: Confronting the Monster

Now comes the time to face the fearsome creature head-on. This is where the real struggle begins, as you engage in a series of combat rounds until either you emerge victorious or find yourself too exhausted to continue. During each round, you and the monster will take turns, with the monster leading if you’ve opted for Hard difficulty.

Begin the battle by placing a token on the starting position of both the Armor and Wound trackers on the Monster Tracker.

Remember: Keep in mind that there may be specific conditions in play that can alter the standard rules of combat. Make sure to have any active condition cards within reach to remind yourself of their effects.

My Turn to Play

When it’s my turn in combat, I get to make a choice. I can choose one of the following options:

  1. Attack with my Weapon
  2. Take an Action
A. Attack with Weapon

If I want to attack using my weapon, I need to spend the effort shown on my weapon sheet. Then, I apply the result of my attack. This can either cause wounds or break the monster’s armor.

If I inflict wounds, the attack power determines how many wounds I can cause. I move the token on the Monster tracker one space for each wound I inflict. If the token reaches or exceeds the Health value shown on the monster sheet – I have defeated the monster!

When facing a monster, it’s crucial to remember that any armor it has must be broken before you can hurt it. This means that you must focus your attacks on the monster’s armor first. The armor is represented by a tracker on the Monster tracker, and you move the token across the tracker to break the armor. Once the armor resource bar reaches the number specified on the monster sheet, you can start inflicting wounds on the monster through your weapon attacks and actions, unless stated otherwise.

It’s important to note that some monsters have additional costs associated with attacking them using weapons. These costs don’t apply when you use your skills to inflict wounds. So, be aware of any extra requirements or sacrifices that may be necessary when using weapons against certain monsters.

Keep in mind that certain effects can modify the monster’s Health and Armor values, either increasing or decreasing them. This can change the target numbers on the armor and wound bars, affecting when you can start inflicting wounds or defeat the monster.

B. Take an Action

If you want to do something, you can choose from the options available to you. These options can come from your reference sheet, your character sheet, your skill cards, or unique choices given by the monster. Right now, you can take actions labeled as “combat actions” or “general actions,” but not “travel actions.”

Some combat actions let you hurt the monster without using your weapon, and they may even bypass the monster’s armor! If a skill causes wounds or breaks armor, use the instructions above to keep track of them using wound/armor trackers.

Monster Turns

During the monster’s turn in combat, you’ll roll a six-sided die to determine what the monster will do. Look at the combat actions table on the monster sheet and use the monster effect that matches the die roll.

Some skills and abilities will let you change the monster’s rolls or reduce the effects of the monster’s attacks. Remember that no matter what changes you make, the roll result can’t go higher than 6 or lower than 1. If you can’t use a monster effect, use the alternative effect instead (it’s listed in brackets). If there’s no alternative effect, nothing happens.

If a monster effect would cause you to gain a condition that you already have for the next level, just roll the dice again. If it would cause you to immediately gain a condition that you already have, the condition will last longer according to the time listed. However, if one of your skills allows you to ignore a specific type of monster effect, then nothing happens when that action is rolled during combat.

If a monster effect causes you to lose time, simply adjust the token on your time resource bar – you will have less time in the next level. But if you are already in level IV, spend an equal amount of small effort instead.

Battle Outcome

There are two possible outcomes of the Battle Step:

  1. If the token on the wound tracker reaches the same number as the monster’s health, that means you have defeated the monster and emerged victorious. Now you can move on to the Rewards Step.
  2. If you can’t spend effort, it means you’ve lost the game and fallen into the catacombs.

Step 3: Rewards Step

Defeating the monster will reward you with resources listed on its sheet. You’ll also draw two cards from the skill deck, keeping one and discarding the other.

If you trick the monster, you won’t receive any rewards or new skills.

Step 4: Hunger Step

After defeating the monster, you must eat food equal to its level, which is your food requirement. Each food you eat will give you one small effort.

If you can’t or don’t want to meet the food requirement, you have to use effort. For each food you don’t eat, you spend one small effort. If you don’t have enough effort to cover the uneaten food, you starve and the game is over.

Tip: If you still have enough effort left, you can choose to eat less than the required amount of food. This way, you can save the extra food for a more critical moment later on.

Example: Let’s say you defeat the Level 3 Minotaur with your Huntress, Kira. She needs to eat 3 Food, but she only has 2. She decides to save one for the final level and only eats 1 Food. By eating it, she regains 1 small effort.

Since she ate 2 less food than required, she loses 3 small effort (one for each missing food).

End of Phase

How to play Unbroken Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Congratulations, you win the game if the monster you just defeated was level IV! You managed to escape from the dreadful catacombs! But if the monster was at a lower level, don’t worry, there’s still more to come. Before you move on to the next level, make sure you’re prepared by following these steps:

1. Put tokens on your character’s ability bar equal to the level you’re about to start. For example, if it’s level II, place two tokens on the character sheet.

2. Remove any active conditions you currently have and put them back in the condition deck. Move any new conditions that you acquired during combat next to your character sheet. These new conditions will be active in the next level.

3. Remove the defeated monster from the game.

End of the Game:

The game will end in one of two ways:

– You win if the monster you defeated was level IV.

– You continue to the next level if the monster was at a lower level.

When you play the game, you encounter a series of challenges and make decisions that will determine your outcome. Let’s take a closer look at the different scenarios and how they impact your score.

There are two ways you can reach the end of the game. The first is by defeating the final monster in level IV. This victory will result in a high score and a feeling of accomplishment. The second way the game can end is by running out of resources, specifically effort. You cannot spend effort when it’s required during combat or when you’re hungry. If this happens, it’s game over. You will be defeated, either in combat or by starvation.

If you manage to win, your final score is calculated based on the resources you have left. Each resource, except for small effort, has a point value. The more resources you have remaining, the higher your score will be. Make sure to strategically manage your resources throughout the game to maximize your chances of victory and achieve a high score.
