When it comes to fishing in this game, the goal is to cast your lures into the river and catch fish that score you points. But be careful to avoid catching any river rubbish! The ultimate objective is to be the first player to catch either 10 points worth of fish if there are 2-4 players, or 7 points worth if there are 5-6 players.
Setting Up
To start, make sure to separate the River cards from the Tackle Box cards. Shuffle each deck separately. Then, depending on the number of players, deal out the following combination of cards:
| 2 | 5 | 3 |
| 3 – 4 | 4 | 3 |
| 5 – 6 | 3 | 2 |
After that, stack the remaining cards face down in separate piles in the middle of the playing area. Make sure to keep your cards hidden from your opponents by holding them in your hands.
Playing the Game

When it comes to starting the game, I’m always the last player to catch a live fish. It’s my turn now, and I have to make a decision. I’ll choose one of my lure cards and ‘cast’ it into the river. To do that, I’ll just place it face up on the discard pile next to the Tackle Box pile in the middle.
Now, it’s time for my opponents to take action. They need to check their hands and play a card face down in front of them. They have two choices:
- They can play a fish card that matches the color of the lure card I played.
- Or, they can play a riverrubbish card, like a boot, tire, can, or trombone.
But there are some rules they need to follow:

If you have one fish card that matches the color, you have to play it face down.

If you have more than one fish of the same color, you have to pick one of them and play it face down.

If you happen to have both a fish card with the same color and a river rubbish card, you have the option to play one of them face down. It’s up to you which card you choose to play. Just make sure you play one of them.

If I don’t have a fish of the same color but have a card that represents river rubbish, I can make a choice. I can either play the rubbish card face down or decide not to catch anything by saying “No Catch!” It’s totally up to me!

When it’s my turn to play, if I don’t have any fish cards that match the color or river rubbish cards, I just say, “No Catch!”
Note: If nobody can play a fish card or a river rubbish card, my turn ends right away. I’ll draw a new lure card from the Tackle Box, and then it’s the next person’s turn.
Once everyone else has either played a facedown card or said, “No Catch!”, it’s time for me to pick one of the cards without looking and show it to everyone.

If you pick a fish card, keep it face up in front of you as part of your “bucket”. The number of fish in your bucket will determine your score later.

When you pick a card and it turns out to be river garbage, you’re in a bit of a jam! Just put it in the discard pile next to the stack of cards from the river.
To finish your turn, grab a card from the Tackle Box pile to replace your lure. The person whose card you chose will have to refill their hand by taking a new card from the pile in the river. Make sure not to show the value of any face-down cards that weren’t chosen when you gather them back up.
The game keeps going, moving to the left, with the next player casting a lure following the same rules as before.
By the way, there’s a special kind of lure called Lunker Lures.

I’ve got an exciting fishing strategy for you! Let me introduce you to Lunker lures, the ultimate catchers of the biggest fish in the river. When you play a Lunker lure (rainbow) card, all your opponents are in for a surprise. They must choose and play (face down) the fish card with the highest number from their hand, regardless of its color. If they have multiple cards with the same highest number, they get to pick which one to play.
Don’t worry, you still have a chance to make your own selection from the face down cards. But trust me, your odds of catching a big fish are pretty high with this amazing lure!
Here are a couple of notes to keep in mind while playing. If the Tackle Box pile runs out of cards, don’t fret! Just shuffle the discard pile and create a new stack by placing it face down. And if the River pile runs out of cards, it’s time to make the most of what you have in your hand. You won’t be able to restock anymore.
Now, what’s the end goal? Keep playing rounds until one player catches enough fish to score a total of 10 or more points in a 3-4 player game, or 7 or more points in a 5-6 player game. It’s all about reeling in those points and being the top fisherman!
So, are you ready to cast your line and take your fishing game to the next level with Lunker lures? Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Let’s go!
If, by some twist of fate, every single player on the board exhausts all their River cards without triggering the end condition, then the victor will be the one who has gathered the most points along the way.
If you’re in the mood for a lengthier game, you can simply establish a higher point threshold before beginning the match.
Rules for 2 Players

Let’s play a game with a twist! We’ll follow the standard rules, but with a few changes. When you cast a lure, your opponent has to play one or two River cards from their hand. Here’s how it works:
- If your opponent has more than one fish card in a matching color, they have to play two of them face down and you get to choose one.
- If your opponent has both a matching fish card and a River Rubbish card, they have to play both cards face down and again, you get to choose one.
- However, if you have a single fish card in a matching color, you must play it, but you can never play just a single River Rubbish card.
When your opponent plays more than one card, it’s up to you to decide which one you want to catch. Your opponent can take back the card you didn’t choose. Then, it’s your opponent’s turn to play.
The goal is to be the first player to reach 10 points worth of fish. Good luck and have fun!
Advanced Rules

If you want to make the game more challenging, try adding one or more of these rules:
- If you catch river rubbish, it’s worth -1 point. Instead of discarding it, add it to your bucket. Keep in mind that these cards will count against your total at the end of the game.
- When a player reaches 7 points worth of fish, all players add the fish they have left in their hands to their buckets. If you’re playing with the river rubbish rule, remember to add those cards too. The player with the highest total wins.
- After choosing a card from the facedown options, all other players show their “uncaught” cards to everyone before taking them back into their hands.
