Hello! Today I want to talk about a fun game called “Name the Robot.” In this game, you’ll get to know different robot characters and try to remember their names in order to collect cards. The goal is to gather as many robot cards as possible to win the game.
How to Set Up the Game

Alright, here’s the deal. We’re gonna shuffle the deck and hand out the cards face-down to everybody. If there are any extra cards, keep ’em away for now. You’ll want to create a pile with your cards facing down in front of you. And remember, no peeking!
Let the Game Begin
So, we’ll be playing Thing-a-ma-Bots in rounds. Whoever has a first name closest to “A” gets to start, and then we’ll go around in a clockwise direction.
On your turn, you grab the top card from your pile and flip it over, placing it in a center pile for everyone to see. Make sure you don’t sneak a peek at your card while flipping it – it’s only fair if we all see it at the same time.
Depending on the card you flip over, you’ll need to take one of the following actions:
New-bot

Hey there! So, you’ve got yourself a brand new robot card. It’s time to give it a cool name! You can get creative and come up with any name that tickles your fancy. It could be a regular name like “Jane” or “Billy,” or maybe something wild like “Freaky Fido” or “Steam Machine.” Heck, you could even go for some silly nonsense names like “Siskamella” or “Wartabulous”! The choice is yours!
Remember, once you’ve picked a name, make sure to say it out loud for everyone to hear and remember. Now, let’s keep the game going! Each player takes their turn and comes up with brand new robot names. The fun never stops!
Same-bot

If you have a card that matches a robot already in the middle, and you can remember its name and say it out loud, you win the pile. Put all the cards next to your pile of cards that you are playing, so that everyone can see them.
When you have a pile of cards that you have won, put them on top of your pile. The next round starts with the player on the left of the person who played the last card that everyone can see.
Important:
Each round, the robots have different names. They don’t keep the same names from one round to the next. (See Variations for a different way to play).
Thing-a-ma-bot
Once a robot is on top of your pile of cards that you have won, it loses its name and becomes a “Thing-a-ma-Bot”.
If you see a card in the center pile that has the same image as the top card in someone’s Wins pile, you can steal their entire Wins pile if you shout “Thing-a-ma-Bot!” before anyone else does. You have to add the stolen cards to the bottom of your own Wins pile.
Some things to keep in mind:
- If you shout “Thing-a-ma-Bot!” first, you only get the other player’s Wins pile, not the cards in the center pile. To get the cards in the center pile, you have to correctly name a robot that has been mentioned during that round.
- If the top card in your Wins pile matches the top card in the center pile, you have to shout “Thing-a-ma-Bot!” before anyone else does to protect your cards from being stolen.
Ties (Thing-a-ma-Jinx)
If we both say the right robot name or “Thing-a-ma-Bot!” at the same time, we’ll split the cards evenly. Any extra cards will be set aside and not used.
Slips (Thing-a-ma-Oops)
If I say the wrong name or call out at the wrong time, I have to give up one card from the bottom of my Wins pile. That card will be set aside and not used.
Forgotten Names (Thing-a-ma-Duh)
If none of us can remember the name of a robot, but we all agree it has already come up before in this round, we’ll move the middle pile of cards to the side where we can all see it. Then we’ll start a new round.
The top card in the middle pile becomes a Thing-a-ma-Bot. The first person to shout “Thing-a-ma-Bot!” during the next match will win that pile.
End of the Game
Once one of us runs out of Play pile cards, the game is over. Remember, don’t include any leftover cards from the other Play piles. After that, it’s time to tally up our Wins piles and see who has the most cards. That player will be crowned the winner!
Variations to Consider
Before we start playing, we should decide if we want to mix things up with these different versions:
Same Name Game: Once we give the robots their names, we have to stick with them for the entire game.
Thing-a-ma-Body: Instead of coming up with names for the robots, we can use body gestures or sounds. We could clap our hands, pat our heads, or even stick our tongues out.
Younger Players (3 or more): If we have little ones playing with us, we can modify the rules. If a card is “Same-Bot” or “Thing-a-ma-Bot,” the person who played the card doesn’t shout but instead decides who wins.
