The Objective

Game Setup

Before we begin our journey, let’s set up the game. Each player starts with a deck of cards representing their expedition team. These cards can be used to move along the game board, acquire helpful tools, or overcome challenges. Shuffle your deck, and draw a starting hand of four cards.

Gameplay

How to Play

Phase 1 – We Play Cards

Now, in this phase, we have two options: we can either (A) use the cards in our hand to move our playing piece or (B) buy a new card to add to our expedition.

Here’s the catch, though: each card in our hand can only be used once per turn. So, first, we should play the cards we want to use for moving. Once we’re done with that, we can use the remaining cards to buy ourselves a shiny new card.

A. Movement

If you’re on a quest to find El Dorado, you’ll encounter various terrains: landscape, rubble, and base camp. Each type of terrain has different requirements you must meet to advance.

Let’s start with the landscape spaces. When you come across one, you need to pick a card from your hand and place it above your expedition board. Most cards have a power value, which determines how far you can move. If the power value is high enough, you can move one or more spaces of the same type next to your current position. You can even play another card to make an extra move.

There are two requirements for playing a card:

The symbol on the card must match the color/symbol on the space you want to move to.

When playing the game, there are a few rules to keep in mind regarding the power value of the card and the landscape space. First, the power value of the card must be equal to or higher than the power of the space. If both conditions are met, you can move onto that space.

If you have some power left over, you can use it to continue moving to the next space. However, you must first subtract the power you’ve already spent from the played card’s power value. Remember, you can stop moving at any time, but if you do, any unspent power is lost immediately.

It’s important to note that you cannot combine multiple cards to move onto a landscape space with a high power value. So be strategic in choosing your cards and planning your moves.

Now let’s talk about special spaces in the game. These spaces have unique rules or effects that you should be aware of. Pay close attention to these special spaces as they can greatly impact your game strategy.

To get to a rubble or base camp space, just play any cards from your hand. The number of symbols on the space tells you how many cards to play. It doesn’t matter which cards you use.

When you use cards to advance on a base camp space, those cards aren’t just thrown away. No, they’re taken out of the game completely. You won’t be seeing them again in this match.

Hint: Do you want to improve your deck and make it more efficient? A great way to do that is by eliminating weak cards. This will make your expedition “lean” and ensure that you consistently draw your best and most powerful cards.

Important: Remember that you cannot move onto mountains (black) or spaces that are already occupied by other players.

B. Get New Cards

Are you ready to add some new cards to your deck? You can buy one card per turn, regardless of whether you have moved or not.

Cards that have a coin symbol on them are valued based on their power. The value of all other cards is equal to % a coin each. Feel free to play as many cards as you want and add up their values. This total amount is the money you have available to spend on the new card.

When you’re playing the game, you can pick a card from the market board that fits your budget and place it face up in your discard pile. But here’s the catch: you can’t use that card or add it directly to your hand during this turn. Instead, it will be mixed in with the rest of your discard pile and eventually end up in your draw pile.

So, how do I get the other expedition cards?

Right at the start of the game, you have the opportunity to choose from 6 different piles of expedition cards on the market board. Once all the cards in a pile have been sold (all 3 of them), you unlock the ability to grab the cards next to the market board.

If there’s at least one empty spot on the market board, you have the freedom to choose any expedition card that matches your budget. Even if it’s not currently on the market board, you can still snatch it up. If the card you choose belongs to one of the piles next to the market board, just put the entire pile in the empty spot.

Whenever there’s an open spot on the market board, you can grab any unclaimed expedition cards that are still available.

Unique Cards: Things

When you come across cards with a crossed-out symbol, those are item cards. These cards can only be played once per game. Once you’ve used an item card, you need to remove it from the game, not just put it in your discard pile.

There’s one exception: If you play an item card without using its function, like passing a space with rubble or using it as a coin, you should place it above your expedition board after playing it and then put it in your discard pile.

Phase 2 – Discard Played Cards

When your turn is over, remember to put all the cards you’ve placed above your expedition board during phase 1 (excluding any cards that were completely removed from the game) face up on your discard pile.

If you still have cards in your hand, like experts or items, you have a choice to make. You can keep them for your next turn or discard them. It’s up to you to decide for each card individually.

Phase 3 – Draw Cards

Now it’s time to draw some cards. Take cards from your draw pile until you have 4 cards in your hand.

Uh-oh, your draw pile is empty. Don’t worry! If you don’t have enough cards in your draw pile for your next turn, you can draw as many as possible. Then, shuffle your discard pile to create a new draw pile and continue drawing the remaining cards you need.

After you’re done, it’s time to pass the turn to the next player in order.

Blockades

Blockades are like obstacles that get in your way. When you come across a blockade, you need to overcome it by meeting its power requirement, which is the number of symbols on the blockade.

To overcome a blockade, you play cards just like you would for movement. Once you’ve successfully overcome a blockade, you get to keep it. You can use these blockades as tie breakers at the end of the game. Once a blockade is removed, all players are free to enter the spaces that were previously blocked.

Blockades work the same way as other spaces on the board. For example, if you have a Discoverer card with a machete 3 power, you can use it to fulfill the machete 1 requirement of a blockade, and then continue moving onto an adjacent green field if there is one.

End of the Game

When you reach one of the 3 finishing spaces in the game, it’s time for the final round. Place your playing piece on El Dorado to free up the finishing space. In this round, each player that is still in the game will take their final turn. Once everyone has taken their turn, the game is over.

If you are the last player to reach a finishing space in a round, the game ends immediately. You become the winner!

If the final round has multiple players reaching El Dorado, the player who has collected the most blockades wins the game. If there is still a tie, the player with the highest power blockade becomes the ultimate winner.
