Greetings, fellow gamers. Today, I’m here to guide you through the amazing world of Terraforming Mars: Prelude. So, let’s dive right in and discover the rules of this extraordinary game.

As you’ll probably guess from the title, Terraforming Mars: Prelude serves as a prelude to the main game. It adds an extra layer of excitement and strategic depth to your overall gaming experience. Are you ready to take your Mars terraforming skills to new heights? Let’s get started!

Understanding Prelude

So, what exactly is this Prelude all about? Well, it’s an expansion pack for the Terraforming Mars game. It provides players with new cards that enable them to jumpstart their Martian endeavors. These special Prelude cards give you a boost right at the beginning of the game, allowing you to establish a strong foundation for your future actions.

Here’s the really cool part. Each player gets to choose four Prelude cards from a total of seven available options. These cards grant you unique abilities, resources, or even extra production. Think of them as your secret weapons, giving you an edge over your opponents from the very start.

How Prelude Works

Let me explain how this all fits together. At the beginning of the game, after drawing your initial 10 cards, it’s time to choose your Prelude cards. You can see the seven options laid out before you – each with its own advantages and quirks. It’s like being a kid in a candy store!

Take a moment to carefully consider your choices. This is a crucial decision that will shape your strategy for the rest of the game. Imagine the possibilities! Which cards will complement each other and maximize your gains? This is where your tactical skills come into play.

Once you’ve made your selections, you get to play them right away. Each card will provide you with immediate benefits. Whether it’s additional income, extra resources, or an improved ability – your chosen Prelude cards will give you a valuable boost right from the start.

The Benefits of Prelude

Now, you might be wondering, “What’s in it for me? How will these Prelude cards help me win the game?” Great question!

By carefully selecting your Prelude cards, you’ll be able to optimize your strategy and accelerate your progress. These cards give you an early advantage, allowing you to generate extra income, establish a powerful engine, or jumpstart your Mars terraforming efforts. They set the stage for your subsequent actions, shaping the way you approach the game.

Remember, while Prelude cards can be a game-changer, they’re not a guaranteed path to victory. A wise player must adapt and explore various options to build a solid strategy. Keep an eye on your opponents, and be ready to adjust your course if needed.

When you’re setting up the game, you mix the 7 project cards into the main project card deck and the 5 corporations into the corporation deck. This little icon down here at the bottom left of the cards shows that they’re from the Prelude expansion. The remaining 35 Prelude cards get shuffled into their own deck, and these are the only ones we use when we talk about Prelude cards.

Here are some variations you can try: Each person gets 1 corporation card from Prelude and 1 from the other corporations. If you don’t want to use the Prelude cards, you can still use the 7 project cards and the 5 corporations in the game.

Prelude Cards

Hey there! So, when we start setting up the game and dealing the cards (which happens in the main game), each player also gets 4 special cards called Prelude cards. Now, here’s the cool part – you get to choose 2 of these Prelude cards to keep, along with the corporations and project cards you choose during step 6. And guess what? These Prelude cards won’t cost you anything.

Once all the corporations have been played and everyone has paid for their cards during step 7, there’s a little extra round called step 7b. In this round, each player gets to play their pair of chosen Prelude cards in the order that they were picked. But don’t worry, you don’t have to hold on to your other 2 Prelude cards – just discard them. Easy-peasy, right? Oh, and these Prelude cards, they work just like green cards and stay in play for everyone to see their special tags.

Alright, after this little Prelude card extravaganza, we kick off the action phase with the first player during step 8. By the way, did you know that the whole setup we just did is actually considered part of generation 1? Pretty neat, huh?

The Power of the Wild Tag

Hey there! Have you ever heard of the wild tag in Terraforming Mars? It’s a special ability that can really change the game. Let me tell you all about it!

So, here’s how it works. When you play a card with the wild tag, it’s like you have a blank canvas. You get to choose any tag you want for that card. Pretty cool, right? This means that when you take an action, you can use the wild tag to give your card the ability you need in that moment.

But hold on, there’s more! The wild tag doesn’t count towards awards, so you don’t have to worry about that. It’s there solely for you to use strategically. For example, let’s say you’re aiming for a milestone. You can use the wild tag on a card to claim that milestone and move closer to victory.

Now, you might be wondering why the wild tag doesn’t trigger when it’s played or put into play. Well, that’s because it’s all about giving you flexibility and control over your actions. It’s like having a secret weapon up your sleeve!

Remember, the wild tag in Terraforming Mars is a game-changer. It allows you to adapt to different situations and make strategic moves. So, next time you play, don’t forget to harness the power of the wild tag and take your game to the next level!

Playing Solo with Prelude: A Limited Time to Terraform

When I use the Prelude cards during a solo game, I have a tight deadline of only 12 generations to complete the terraforming process. It’s a race against time!

I mark the final generation, generation 12, with a special gold cube to keep track of my progress.

TR Solo: A New Challenge for Solo Players

Are you ready for a new challenge? This exciting solo variant can be played with any expansion. The goal is no longer to complete the global parameters; instead, I strive to achieve a Terraform Rating (TR) of 63 in just 14 generations. If I choose to use the Prelude cards, I only have 12 generations to reach my target.

To keep track of my progress, I mark the TR track with a gold cube at the 63 mark.

In TR solo, there’s an additional standard project called BUFFER GAS. It costs 16 M and grants 1 TR. This new project gives me more options to boost my TR. All other rules remain the same as in a normal solo game.
