Okay, let’s get started! First, we need to set up the game board. Lay out the board and put each territory token in its respective territory. The map has a total of 24 territories, and they are divided into three Zones.

Keep in mind: There are 8 territories on the board that have cities. These cities have special benefits that I’ll explain in a bit. The city territories are North Hold, Rocky Wild, Lookout Ledge, Keyfort, Ravenfall, Castleburg, and Mammoth Bay.

You will also see some mountain ranges on the board. These mountains are impassable, meaning that no units can go through or attack from them. They act as natural barriers.

To start the game, take out the Traitor card from the special action deck. Shuffle the deck and then place the Traitor card at the bottom of the deck. The special action deck goes into the “Draw” area on the board.

Let’s get ready to play! We all sit around the game board, each of us picking a side. I pick a color and put all my unit markers in my reserve bag. To decide who goes first, we each draw a unit from our reserve bag.

The person who draws the unit with the highest rank becomes the Starting Player. The Cursed Land is worth 0 points, the Flag is worth 11 points, and the Spy Master beats the King.

Starting with the Starting Player, we take turns choosing territory tokens from the board until all the territories are evenly distributed. Each territory is controlled by one player during the initial setup. I place all the Territory Tokens in front of me since I control them.

It’s Time to Put Your Units in Place

When playing the game, make sure to place all of your units on the board in each territory you own. The unit markers are made so that only you can see which unit is which when it’s on the game board. You have to put at least one unit in each territory you have. At the beginning, you’re allowed to move your units around as much as you want.

You can only place one unit in each zone, and a maximum of three units per territory. The game starts once everyone has finished placing their units. The player who gets to start first is called the Starting Player.

The goal of the game is to defeat your opponents by capturing their Flag.

A territory is considered to be under your control when it only has your units in it. You get to keep the token of the territory as long as you control it.

After that, I divide the number of territory tokens I have in half, and round down. That gives me the number of action cards I draw from the draw pile.

Next, I place the drawn action cards face up on the table. Now comes the decision. I have to choose one card to play. When I choose a card, I perform the action written on that card. After that, I discard all the cards to the “Discard” area face up.

It’s always known how many cards are left in the draw pile. When the draw pile is empty, I shuffle the discard pile to create a new draw pile.

Here’s how it works: Move one of your pieces to a neighboring area. If there’s an enemy piece in that area, there will be a battle. You also get an extra move at the start of your turn for each territory you control that has a City.

Every turn, you’re guaranteed at least one move, no matter what your situation is in the game (unless you only have a Flag or Cursed Land, in which case you can’t move). This move is mandatory. Units can only move from one area to an adjacent area (except Scouts).

You can move your units to any neighboring area as long as it’s connected to the area they’re currently in.

Two units of the same color can’t be in the same area at the same time. Units of different colors can be in the same area, but only for fighting, and only until the battle is over.

Note: Each territory can hold up to three units, one in each area.

If your unit has a higher rank than your opponent’s unit, you win the battle. Your opponent puts their defeated unit in their reserve bag.

If your unit has a lower rank, then you lose the battle. You put your defeated unit in your reserve bag.

If your unit has the same rank as your opponent’s unit, both units are defeated. We each put our defeated unit in our reserve bag.

Cursed Land

When a unit attacks Cursed Land, the attacking unit is defeated and placed into the reserve bag. Only a Sorceress can attack and defeat Cursed Land.

Spy Master

Only the Spy Master has the power to defeat a King. When the Spy Master attacks the King, the King is defeated. However, if the King attacks the Spy Master, it’s the Spy Master who gets defeated.

The Flag

Any unit can seize a player’s Flag. If your Flag is ever seized, you can no longer draw action cards, even if you occupy multiple territories. The seized Flag goes to the player who captured it.

To recapture your Flag, you must capture your opponent’s Flag (which is still on the board) with one of your remaining pieces. If you succeed, you can place your Flag in any open zone on the board and keep your opponent’s newly captured flag(s) in front of you.

If I don’t have my own flag, I can’t control an opponent’s flag that I capture. When I capture an opponent’s flag, it goes to the player who has my flag.
