Alright, so here’s the deal: Stop Thief! is a super exciting game that will keep you on your toes. The objective is simple – you need to catch a pesky thief who’s up to no good. You and your fellow detectives will work together using your wits and cunning to apprehend this sneaky criminal. Let’s go over the key details to get you started.
Components
First things first, let’s take a quick look at what comes in the box:
- A game board, which represents the city you’re trying to protect
- A Thief pawn, representing the elusive criminal you’re after
- Detective pawns, which represent you and your fellow crime solvers
- Cards with different locations and special actions
- Radar tokens, used to track the thief’s movements
- Money tokens, because let’s face it, detectives need to get paid too!
- Other tokens and markers to keep track of various game elements
Gameplay
Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s talk about how the game is played. The gameplay follows a series of turns, where each player takes actions to gather clues and narrow down the thief’s location. The player who manages to capture the thief wins the game. Here’s a breakdown of the different actions you can take:
- Move – You can move your detective pawn to different locations on the board. This allows you to gather clues and potentially spot the thief.
- Search – When you reach a location, you can search for clues. This is where the cards come into play. You’ll draw a card and follow the instructions to gather information.
- Use Special Action – Some cards have special actions that you can take. These can be super helpful in catching the thief or gaining an advantage.
- Scan – Using your trusty radar tokens, you can scan adjacent locations to see if the thief is nearby. This can help you narrow down their possible hiding spots.
- Trap – If you’re confident you’ve found the thief’s location, you can set a trap to catch them. But be careful, if you’re wrong, the thief will escape!
Beware the Thief
Now, it’s important to keep in mind that the thief is no dummy. They’ll try to evade your every move and make their escape if you’re not careful. The thief has their own set of rules and actions that they can take, so you’ll need to stay sharp and outsmart them at every turn.

Let the Game Begin

Hey there! Let me tell you about how the game works. It’s pretty simple, so don’t worry!
First off, we’ll need to go around the table clockwise. That means each player takes a turn in the order that the table goes. It’s important to take turns so that everyone gets a chance to play.
Okay, so when it’s your turn, there are three steps that you need to do. Let me break it down for you:
- Step 1: Take a card – You’ll need to draw a card. This can be really exciting, because you never know what you’re going to get! It could be a good card that helps you, or maybe a card that makes things a bit more challenging. It’s all part of the fun!
- Step 2: Play a card – Now that you have a card, it’s time to play it. You can choose to play it on yourself or on another player. Just remember, the goal is to try and get rid of all your cards, so you’ll want to make smart choices about where you play them.
- Step 3: Draw a card – After playing a card, you’ll need to draw a new one to replace it. This keeps your hand full and ensures you always have something to play. It’s a cycle that keeps the game going!
So, that’s how it works! Pretty straightforward, don’t you think? You’ll have a blast playing and strategizing with your friends. Have fun!

- Let’s Solve the Mystery
- Time to Make a Move
- Catch the Culprit (if you want to)
Ready to Solve the Case
Are you ready to crack the case? All you need to do is hit the “GET A CLUE” button on the app. Once you press it, the app will make a sound that everyone can hear. That sound is your cue to start sleuthing and figure out where the thief is hiding. Don’t worry, the clue isn’t a secret. If someone missed it, they can listen to it again.
How the Thief Moves (in the standard game):

In this game, I am the thief. My aim is to navigate the crime scene and escape undetected. To do this, I must follow a set of rules:
- Start: I always begin on a crime scene space.
- Movement: I move from one numbered space to the next along a footprint path. I can skip over the unnumbered circles.
- No Return: I cannot go back to the space I just moved from on the previous turn.
- Stay or Move: I can choose to stay in the same space for a turn.
- Doors and Windows: If I move onto a door or window space, I will automatically go through it to the next room or outdoor area on my next move. I won’t open a window and then go back inside.
- Subway: If I come across a subway space, it sounds like any other outdoor space. I can walk on it like any other numbered space, but I cannot take the subway.
These rules help me navigate the crime scene strategically, thinking about each move and avoiding detection. It’s a challenging game, but by following the rules, I can make my escape successfully. Are you ready to catch me?
To start off, I have a fascinating observation for you. It turns out that if a thief returns to a crime scene, they’re bound to rob it again. And even if they move on to a different scene, they continue their spree. I guess you could say it’s a crime spree!
Crime Spree!
Now, here’s something interesting. Sometimes, the sound clue gives away that the thief has managed to strike yet another crime scene. It’s like they just can’t help themselves!
In such instances, you get an extra reward for catching this dastardly criminal. Yep, you’ll get $1,000 from the bank, and it goes straight onto your thief card as a bonus.
II. Play a Card
Alright, let’s get into the action. It’s time to play a card from your hand and lay it down on the table. Now, here’s the fun part: you get to move a certain number of spaces, as indicated by the card.
But wait, there’s more! Some cards have special powers that you can use before, during, or after your move. The best part is, you don’t have to move the full number of spaces if you don’t want to. And, of course, you’re not obligated to use the special power either.
When you play a card from your hand, it stays on the table until you can pick up your movement cards. Usually, this happens when you use another one of your movement cards.
Here are the rules for how investigators can move:
- Investigators have to follow the footprint paths and use all the spaces, including the unnumbered circles. The only exception is that investigators can’t go through or onto a window space, unless there’s a special effect that lets them do so.
- Investigators can move through spaces that are already occupied by another investigator, but they can’t end their movement on a space where there’s another investigator.
There is one exception: more than one investigator can be on the subway spaces.

Hi there! Let me explain a few important things to you about moving around in this game. It can be a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite straightforward.
So, when I’m playing as an investigator, I have the option to move onto a subway space. And here’s the cool part – I can then move to any other subway space on the board completely for free! It’s like a teleportation power, but just for subway spaces. Pretty neat, huh? Once I’ve made this move, I stop moving and can’t go any further.
Sometimes, certain thief effects may come into play and put some restrictions on where I can move. They might limit the number of spaces I can move onto or even specify the type of spaces investigators like me can access. Gotta be careful of those restrictions!
So, now you’re all set! Remember, if you have any movement cards with special effects, you can still use those effects even after moving to a new space. Just keep these rules in mind as you navigate through the game, and you’ll do great!
Let’s get to know the gameboard!
When you hear a certain sound, it means the thief has moved to a new space:
If you hear an alarm, the thief is at the crime scene.
If you hear footsteps, the thief is inside a building.
If you hear a muffled speaker, the thief is in the subway. (In the standard game, the subway is treated as a regular outside space).
If you hear a creaky door, the thief is at a door.
If you hear breaking glass, the thief is at a window.
If you hear hubbub, the thief is outside a building.
If you hear hold music, it means the thief has stayed still.
The unnumbered circle spaces are only used by investigators – thieves skip over them.
Remember: Thieves and investigators can move in either direction on the paths, regardless of which direction the footprints point.
III. Try to Catch the Thief (optional)
If you want to catch the thief, you can try to make an arrest on the space you’re currently on or any nearby numbered space. Just click the attempt an arrest button on the app. Everyone will know which space you’re trying to catch the thief on.
Share the number of the space you believe the thief is hiding on and enter it in the app. The app will then let you know if you guessed correctly or not.
- If you guess wrong, you’ll have to pay $1,000 to the bank. If you don’t have any money, nothing happens. After that, play will resume as usual, with the next player on your left taking their turn.
If you’re correct in your deduction, the thief is apprehended. You receive the specified reward money from the thief card and any extra money if they committed multiple crimes. If the thief card has a “When Arrested” effect, that effect is executed. You’ll need to make any necessary decisions for the “When Arrested” effect.

If I were an investigator in this area, I would have two options for making an arrest – either on space 333 or space 324 (but definitely not on 332 because it’s not adjacent).
New Round, Fresh Start
So, once I successfully make an arrest, and if the game isn’t over yet, the player sitting on my left will kick off the next round. The investigators can continue from their current spots on the board. Oh, and don’t forget to discard the card of the thief we caught and reveal a brand-new one.
Game Over, but Winner Found
The game doesn’t go on forever, you know. The first player who amasses enough cash to escape this mediocre gig is the ultimate winner. They can happily retire from this life of chasing thieves.
Welcome to the World of Difficulty Settings!
Since way back in 1979, technology has taken some serious strides forward. Back then, the Crime Scanner – even though it was chunky and clunky – was considered revolutionary. But now, we’ve gone leaps and bounds beyond that. We’ve condensed all that capability into a nifty little app that does so much more than its predecessor.
With this amazing app, we can keep updating the game even after you’ve got it in your hands. That means we can introduce brand new ways for you to play – and trust me, there are plenty of them. This clever app will fill you in on all the different ways you can enjoy the game and give you the lowdown on how to master each one.
