Game Setup:

Before embarking on your mystical adventure, you’ll need to prepare the game. First, lay out the 20 forest cards face-up in a neat grid. Each card features a unique combination of spirit stones. Then, shuffle the 90 spirit stone tokens and place them within reach of all players. Finally, make sure each player has a handy dandy collection bowl to store their gathered spirit stones.

Gameplay:

Now comes the fun part: playing the game! The youngest player goes first, and then play proceeds clockwise. On your turn, you have two options:

1. Gather all spirit stones from one forest card: To do this, simply choose a forest card with some spirit stones on it, and collect all of the spirit stones depicted. Be careful, though! Once you’ve taken the stones, that card is removed from the game. Choose wisely!
2. Refresh the forest: If you’re not quite satisfied with the available options, you can refresh the forest. Simply pick up any three forest cards and replace them with three new ones from the deck. Remember, though, you can only do this once per turn.

The game continues in this manner until all the spirit stone tokens have been collected or a certain number of rounds have been played.

Scoring:

Now, let’s talk about how you earn those precious Spirit Points. At the end of the game, you’ll gain points based on the types of spirit stones you have collected. Here’s the breakdown:

• Each unique colored set of spirit stones is worth 5 points.

Getting Started

To set up the game, start by shuffling the 48 spirit tiles. Once shuffled, deal them face up in four rows of 12 tiles, creating the forest in the center of the table.

Next, shuffle the 14 favor tokens. Take eight of these tokens and place them face down on top of the spirit tiles in the forest. You can refer to the example below for guidance. Keep the remaining six favor tokens aside – you won’t need them for this game.

Finally, distribute three gemstones of the same color to each player if there are only two players. If you’re playing with three or four players, give two gemstones of the same color to each player. These gemstones will be used during the game.

The player who most recently went hiking in a forest will be the first player. Take note of who that is, as they will start the game.

How to Play the Game

When I play Spirits of the Forest, the game goes on for multiple turns. Every turn, I get to collect tiles, examine favor tokens, and place gemstones. It’s a fun and exciting adventure!

After I finish my turn, it’s your turn to play. Then, the game will continue, with each player taking their turn in clockwise order around the table.

Collecting Tiles

During my turn, I have the option to collect tiles from either end of the forest. I can choose one of the following actions:

If I run out of gemstones in front of me, no worries! I can just slide one of my gemstones from one tile to another on the table. But here’s the catch – the destination tile can’t already have a gemstone on it. Makes sense, right?

So, when I place my gemstone on a spirit tile, I’m basically trying to reserve that tile for my future turn. And guess what? If I manage to collect that reserved tile on a future turn, I not only get the tile, but I also get my gemstone back. And hey, I can use it again on that same turn or save it for later turns. Just a heads up: I can only place or move one gem per turn. Gotta keep things fair and square, you know?

You and your opponents keep taking turns until all the tiles in the forest have been collected. Once that happens, it’s time to tally up your points. First, reveal any favor tokens you’ve collected. Then, count up your nature points:

When it comes to the game, I have an important rule to share with you. It’s all about the spirit symbols and how they can earn you some nature points. You see, if you have more spirit symbols for a particular spirit than anyone else, you get to score nature points. The number of nature points you score is equal to the amount of spirit symbols you have.

But what happens if there’s a tie? Well, in that case, all the players who are tied for the most spirit symbols for a spirit get to score some nature points. Just like before, the number of nature points you score is equal to the amount of spirit symbols you have.

Power sources are scored in the same way as spirits. You count the number of power source icons you have for each of the three power sources: Fire, Moon, and Sun. This includes any power source icons on favor tokens you’ve collected.

If you have more power source icons for a particular power source than anyone else, you score nature points equal to the number of icons you have. The other players score no points for that power source.

If there is a tie for the most power source icons for a particular power source, all tied players score nature points equal to the number of icons they have.

If you don’t have any power source icons on your spirit tile, you’ll lose three nature points. But don’t worry, the favor tokens you have don’t count for this calculation.

The player who has the highest number of nature points is the winner.

If there’s a tie, the player who has the fewest tiles compared to the other tied players will be the winner. And if there’s still a tie, then all the tied players will share the victory.
