Hey there! I want to talk about an exciting game called “The Guardian.” The objective of this game is simple: as the hero player, your goal is to defeat the guardian and emerge victorious!

Before we dive deeper into the game, let’s take a look at the setup. You start off with the guardian, who you need to eliminate in order to win.

To get started, make sure you have all the necessary components, like the game board, the guardian figure, and the hero figure. It’s important to set up the game correctly, following the instructions provided. This will ensure a fair and enjoyable experience.

Gameplay

Now that everything is set up, it’s time to jump into the action! The gameplay revolves around strategic decision-making and a bit of luck.

Each turn, you have the opportunity to make moves and take actions. You can move your hero figure, collect resources, and level up your skills. As you progress, your hero becomes stronger and more capable of taking on the guardian.

But be careful, because the guardian won’t make it easy for you. Throughout the game, the guardian will try to hinder your progress and protect itself. It’s up to you to come up with a winning strategy, using your skills wisely and staying one step ahead of the guardian.

Victory!

The game continues until you successfully eliminate the guardian. Once you achieve this, you emerge as the victorious hero player!

Remember, “The Guardian” is not just a game of luck, but also one of skill and strategy. It offers an immersive experience that will keep you engaged and excited until the very end. So, are you ready to take on the challenge and become the ultimate hero?

    • First, you need to decide who will be the guardian player and who will be the hero player. This is an important choice that will determine your roles in the game.
    • The guardian player gets to choose their guardian, while the hero player gets to select their leader. If you’re new to the game, it’s recommended to go with the matchup of Grak vs. the King of War.
    • Once you’ve made your choices, the next step is to give the guardian player the guardian player mat and the hero player the hero player mat. Each player should also receive a reference card that shows the possible actions of their opponent.
    • Before you start playing, make sure to follow any unique setup instructions for the guardian you’ve chosen. You can find these instructions on pages 16 to 19 of the rulebook. For example, if you’ve chosen Grak, you’ll need to place the tribute token on the “0” space of the Grak player mat.
    • Lastly, don’t forget to put away the components for the guardians and leaders that were not chosen. You can store them back in the game box for later.

To begin the game of Skulk Hollow, position the Skulk Hollow map at the center of the table, between the players. Angle it so that the LAIR space faces the guardian player, while the KEEP space faces the hero player.

Next, place the chosen guardian board next to the Skulk Hollow map.

On the Skulk Hollow map, position the hero figures for the Sentinel and the selected leader on the KEEP space. Then, place the selected guardian figure on the LAIR space.

Afterward, gather all the power cubes, wound tokens, and remaining hero figures and place them near the Skulk Hollow map. This area will serve as the supply.

The hero player should place the unit cards for the Sentinel and selected leader in their play area. This will be their designated area for playing these cards.

I’ll explain the sequence of actions that take place at the beginning of the game. The hero player and the guardian player each have their own set of cards that they use to play. Here’s what happens:

First, the hero player mixes up the cards that they’re not currently using and creates their hero deck. They place the deck face down in their play area and make sure there’s enough space nearby for a discard pile. This pile is where the hero player will put the cards that they no longer need or want to use. It’s like a pile of cards that are out of play for now.

Next, the hero player draws a certain number of cards from their hero deck. How many cards they draw is determined by the hand size indicated on their player mat. These cards become the hero player’s starting hand. They hold on to these cards and use them to make their moves during the game.

Now, let’s move on to the guardian player.

The guardian player gathers all the cards for the guardian character that they’ve chosen. They mix up these cards to form the guardian deck. The guardian deck, just like the hero deck, is placed face down in the guardian player’s play area. Again, there should be some space nearby for a discard pile. The guardian player will use this pile to get rid of any cards they don’t need anymore.

Similar to the hero player, the guardian player draws a number of cards from their guardian deck. How many cards they draw is determined by the hand size indicated on their player mat. These cards become the guardian player’s starting hand. They hold on to these cards and use them to make their moves during the game.

That’s it for the setup! Now the game can begin.

In Skulk Hollow, you and your opponent take turns. The game starts with the hero player, and continues until one of you meets the win condition and wins the game right away.

The hero player always goes first in the game.

Both players have the same turn structure: a Main Phase and a Cleanup Phase.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

The Main Phase: Bursting with Action!

Hey there! Welcome to the Main Phase, where the real excitement happens. This is when I can really make things happen! I’ve got a bunch of options, so let’s dive right in.

    • Play Card: Time to get strategic! I can play one card from my hand. This is where the magic happens, and I can use the power of my cards to make game-changing moves.
    • Prepare: Need some fresh ideas? No problem! I can discard one card from my hand and draw two new ones from the deck. Even if I don’t have any cards to discard, I can still take this action and grab two new ones.
    • Spend Power: Now, this is where things get really interesting. I can use my power cubes to take an additional action with one of my guardian or hero units. No need to play a card for this one! Just remove a power cube from one of my units, and boom, I’ve got a whole extra action at my disposal.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Did you know that as a hero player, you can use your power from a hero unit card to take a MOVE action or any other action that is available to your hero unit?

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I’m playing as the guardian, I can use one power from my guardian player mat to perform a MOVE action. I can move in any direction or choose from any other available action.

The cool thing is that spending power for additional actions doesn’t count towards my normal amount of actions. I can spend power to take as many additional actions as I want and can afford.

Now, let’s talk about the Cleanup Phase. This phase comes after I’ve taken all the actions I wanted to or when I no longer have any actions left. During the Cleanup Phase, I need to allocate power and refill my hand.

First, let’s talk about allocating power.

If you have any power cubes left on your player mat after using the GAIN POWER action, you need to find a home for them. You can put them on your guardian player mat or on any hero unit cards you have in play. It’s important to make sure all the power cubes are allocated properly. If there are any cubes left over that can’t be used, they should be returned to the supply.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If you’re like me, sometimes you find yourself with a bunch of power cubes and a few cards in play. But let’s break it down step by step, shall we?

Let’s Start with the Cleanup Phase

At the end of the Main Phase, I have four power cubes in my pool. Currently, I have the King of War, the Sentinel, and an Archer in play. Now, during the Cleanup Phase, I need to decide where to allocate these power cubes.

The choice is clear for the King of War and the Sentinel. They deserve some power cubes, so I give one to the Sentinel and two to the mighty King of War. But, unfortunately, the poor Archer can’t hold any power cubes. So, the remaining cube goes back to the supply, waiting for another hero’s fate.

    Refill Hand

Now, let’s talk about replenishing my hand. From my deck, I draw cards until my hand is full. Remember, each player’s hand size is indicated on our player mat. But there’s a special case: if I already have cards in my hand equal to or more than my hand size (thanks to the PREPARE action), then I only draw one card instead.

When I run out of cards in my deck and need to draw a card, I have to shuffle the cards from my discard pile to create a new deck. But if I don’t have any cards in my deck or discard pile, then I can’t draw or take the PREPARE action.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

For example: Grak has a hand with five cards. When it’s my turn as the guardian player, I also start with five cards. I can play one card to use the GAZE action. Then, I can take the PREPARE action by discarding one card and drawing two more. Now I have five cards in my hand and I have used all of my actions. During the Cleanup Phase, I only draw one card because my hand is already full.

    My Turn as a Hero

As a Foxen hero, I have a special connection to the same power that once belonged to the guardians. Although I may not have as much of it, I am still called to perform great deeds and I am honored as the best among my clan.

Even before I catch sight of the guardians on the horizon, I can feel the truth in the ancient stories.

    Using Cards in the Game

When it comes to the hero deck, there are two types of cards: unit cards and order cards.

    Unit Cards

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When you want to bring new Foxen heroes into the game to help defeat the guardian, you play unit cards. To do this, you place the unit card face up in your play area and take the corresponding hero figure from the supply.

The unit card has an icon in the upper left corner that matches the symbol on the hero figure. Put the hero figure on the Skulk Hollow map, either in the KEEP space or any TOWN space. Just make sure the space isn’t already occupied by the guardian.

You can have as many hero units as you want in a single ground space on the map.

The unit cards stay in play until the hero unit is defeated. When that happens, you discard the unit card and return the hero figure to the supply.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Order Cards: Giving Orders to Hero Units

Order cards are a way for me, as the hero, to direct my hero units on what to do during the game.

When I play an order card, I can choose one of the actions listed on the card for any hero unit of my choice. It’s important to remember that I can only choose one action from the card.

However, not all actions can be taken by all hero units. For example, Knights can’t perform missile attacks, and Archers can’t leap or make melee attacks.

    Available Hero Actions

As the hero player, I have several actions at my disposal:

    • Move
    • Leap
    • Melee Attack
    • Missile Attack
    • Gain Power

    Move: Change Position

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I want to make a move, I can use this action to move one of my hero units from where it is to a nearby space. The arrows on the card will show me which directions I can go. It’s important to consider that the arrows are shown from my own perspective, based on how the Skulk Hollow map is set up. I can only move one space at a time.

    Leap

Hey, have you ever thought about taking a leap? You know, that big jump into the unknown that both excites and scares you at the same time? Well, let me tell you, it can be quite an adventure!

Picture this. You’re standing at the edge of a metaphorical cliff, looking down into a vast expanse of possibilities. The wind is rushing through your hair, and your heart is pounding in your chest. It’s a moment of decision. Do you stay safely on solid ground, or do you take a leap and see where it takes you?

Now, I understand that taking a leap can be intimidating. After all, you’re stepping into the unknown, where anything can happen. But let me assure you, that’s the beauty of it. It’s in those moments of uncertainty that we find our truest selves, that we discover what we’re truly capable of.

Think about it. When you take a leap, you’re opening yourself up to new experiences, new people, and new opportunities. You’re giving yourself the chance to grow, to learn, and to challenge yourself in ways you never thought possible. And that, my friend, is where true growth happens.

Of course, taking a leap isn’t always easy. It requires courage, it requires vulnerability, and it requires trust in yourself. But let me tell you, the rewards are more than worth it. The sense of fulfillment, the joy of pushing beyond your comfort zone, and the personal growth you’ll experience – these are all priceless.

So, my dear friend, I encourage you to take that leap. Embrace the unknown, embrace the adventure, and trust that you have what it takes to soar. It won’t always be easy, and there might be bumps along the way, but remember this: the journey is just as important as the destination.

So go ahead, take a leap. Because in the end, you’ll never know how far you can fly until you spread your wings and leap into the great unknown.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Leap is an incredible ability that allows me to traverse the guardian itself in unique ways. Let me explain three different ways I can do this:

    • If I find myself at the guardian’s ground space, I have the option to attach myself to the lowest location on the guardian. You can easily identify this spot by looking for a large arrow. Some guardians even have multiple lowest locations, giving me more choices!

Now, I must mention that each location on the guardian board only has a limited number of figure slots. If all of the figure slots at a specific location are already occupied, I won’t be able to leap to that spot. It’s important to keep this in mind while planning my moves.

Aha! Here’s an interesting twist: when the DOUBLE LEAP card is played, I have the chance to make two consecutive leaps! I can choose to leap twice with a single hero unit, or I can have two different hero units each make their own leap. It’s a bit of a limitation, though, as no action can be taken between these leaps. But it’s a risk I’m willing to take for the chance to move strategically!

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Example: I need to move the Sentinel figure from the STOMP location to the THROW location on Grak, so I’ll use a LEAP action.

    Close-Range Attack

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

I’m gonna talk about melee attacks and how they work in the game. When you use a melee attack, you’re basically using a hero unit that’s connected to a specific location on the guardian to deal some damage.

Here’s how it works: you place a wound token on an empty wound space at the target location. It’s like a mark that shows the guardian has taken some damage. But, there’s one thing to remember – if there are no empty wound spaces at that location, your melee attack won’t do anything. It’s gotta have a place to leave its mark!

Now, not every hero unit can do a melee attack. Archers, for example, can’t do it. They just don’t have the right action icon on their hero unit cards. So, if you’re an Archer, you’ll have to find another way to attack.

Now let’s talk about missile attacks.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I use a missile attack, I can cause damage to any part of the guardian. I just need to place a wound token on an empty wound space in that location. It’s a powerful move that can turn the tide of battle in my favor.

But there are some rules I need to follow when using this ability. Heroes with the FIRE ability need to be located on the surrounding ground spaces to launch their missile attack. On the other hand, heroes with the HURL ability must be on the guardian’s ground space to unleash their attack.

Unfortunately, not all hero units can use this action. Knights, Rogues, and leader units don’t have the corresponding action icon listed on their hero unit cards, so they are unable to perform missile attacks.

    Power-Up

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I play a card that allows me to gain power, I get a certain number of power cubes. These cubes come from the supply and go into my pool on my player mat.

During the Cleanup Phase of my turn, I can distribute these power cubes to the empty power spaces on my hero units.

Once I allocate power cubes to my hero units, I can use them to take extra actions with those units in the future. I can never give a hero unit more power cubes than it has power spaces on its card. Some hero units, like Knights and Archers, can’t hold any power cubes at all.

I can’t use the GAIN POWER action with my hero units by spending power. It’s not an action they can take, because their hero unit cards don’t have the corresponding action icon.

Example: I play a special card that lets me get two power cubes. I take them from the pile and put them on my mat. Later, when it’s time to clean up, I give one cube to the Princess of Tactics and one to the Sentinel.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Once I have assigned power cubes to my hero unit, I can use them in future turns to perform actions with that hero unit for free.

    The Turn of the Guardians

Many years ago, a group of wizards came together to face a challenge that even the gods would find difficult: the creation of life itself!

They used their most powerful magic to gather materials and shape them into golems and servitors that would bring their visions to life. These creatures eventually became known as the guardians.

    Ratings for Complexity

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When you play as a guardian in the game, each guardian has its own unique abilities and goals. Some are easier to play than others, so it’s important to check the complexity rating indicated by the number of stars next to the guardian’s name on their player mat. This rating tells you how difficult the guardian is to play.

If you’re just starting out as the guardian player, I recommend choosing Grak. Grak has a more straightforward playstyle compared to the other guardians, making it a good choice for your first game.

    Action Limits

Each guardian player mat shows the action limit for that guardian. This limit determines how many actions you can take on your turn. The number of actions allowed varies between guardians. Additionally, most guardians can spend power to take extra actions.

    General Guardian Actions

    Move

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When I play the card to take the MOVE action, I can move the guardian from where it is currently to a nearby space. The arrows on the card show which directions I can choose to move.

I need to look at the arrows based on my own viewpoint as the active player, in relation to the Skulk Hollow map.

    Increase Power

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Let me tell you about gaining power in this awesome game. When I play a card that says “Gain Power,” I get to collect some power cubes!

These power cubes come from the supply and are placed on my player mat. Later, during the Cleanup Phase of my turn, I can use those power cubes to fill up any empty power spaces on my mat.

Once I’ve allocated my power cubes, I can spend them on future turns to do cool things with my guardian. It’s like having extra actions!

But here’s the thing: I can’t spend power to take the “Gain Power” action. It’s not an option for me. And some guardians don’t even have power spaces, so they can’t collect or use power cubes. Bummer, right?

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Example: When it’s my turn to play as Tanthos, I choose a card with the GAIN POWER action. I add one power cube to the pool on my player mat. Later, during the Cleanup Phase, I decide where to allocate the power cube on my mat, so I can use it in a future turn.

    Taking Damage

    Hurting the Leader

If the leader is grouped with another hero unit, they are untouchable – none of the guardian actions can hurt them or have any effect on them.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Finding the right hero unit to use in Skulk Hollow can be a bit tricky. There are certain rules you need to keep in mind when deciding which hero unit to choose. The leader is an important character in the game. It cannot be targeted by certain abilities like Grak’s GAZE or SWING. However, other hero units can be affected by these abilities. For example, Grak’s STOMP affects the other hero unit but not the leader.

Similarly, when the leader and another hero unit are attached to the same location on the guardian, there are certain abilities that cannot target the leader. For instance, Grak’s THROW cannot target the leader, but it can affect the other hero unit. Apoda’s SIZZLE or SLAM can affect the other hero unit, but not the leader.

Understanding these rules and limitations is crucial to making strategic decisions and maximizing your chances of success in Skulk Hollow. By considering these factors, you can choose the right hero unit for each situation and make the most out of their abilities.

Why Wounding Hero Units Can Be a Game-Changer

Let’s talk about something that often goes unnoticed – the power of wounding hero units in video games. You might think that defeating them would be the most logical course of action, but let me tell you, it’s not always that simple. In fact, wounding hero units can be a game-changer in more ways than one.

Firstly, let me explain what a hero unit is. In video games, a hero unit is a special character with unique abilities and strengths. They are often the centerpiece of a player’s strategy and can turn the tide of battle in an instant. These hero units are typically difficult to defeat, requiring a specific approach and tactical thinking.

Now, the interesting part comes when you wound a hero unit instead of fully defeating them. When you wound a hero unit, you weaken them, but they still remain on the battlefield. This creates a dynamic and strategic challenge for both the wounded hero unit and their opponent.

Here’s why wounding hero units can be a game-changer. When a hero unit is wounded, it forces the player controlling them to make tough decisions. They must consider whether to retreat and heal, risking their absence from the battlefield for a period of time, or to continue fighting while being weakened. This adds a layer of complexity to the game and requires careful thinking.

On the other hand, wounding a hero unit also presents an opportunity for the opponent. It gives them a chance to capitalize on the wounded state of the hero unit and launch a counterattack. This can potentially turn the tide of the battle in the opponent’s favor, creating a thrilling and unpredictable gameplay experience.

But it’s not just about the gameplay mechanics. Wounding hero units can also create emotional connections between the player and the character. When a hero unit is wounded, it evokes a sense of vulnerability and the desire to protect and nurture them. This adds depth to the player’s engagement with the game and makes the experience more personal.

In conclusion, wounding hero units can be a game-changer in video games. It introduces strategic challenges, creates thrilling gameplay moments, and fosters emotional connections. So, the next time you encounter a hero unit in a game, don’t be too quick to defeat them. Consider the impact of wounding them and embrace the new possibilities it brings.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

So, here’s the deal: when the guardian attacks one of my heroes, it places a wound token on the hero’s card. Each hero has these spaces, you see, and if they’re all filled up with tokens, that hero is out of the game.

Now, here’s something important: if the leader hero gets eliminated, the game is over and the guardian player wins. No questions asked.

When one of my heroes is eliminated, their figure goes back in the pile, and any power cubes they had left also go back in the supply. The hero’s card, well, that goes in my discard pile. Simple as that.

But wait, how can I hurt the guardian?

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

When a hero attacks the guardian and causes damage, they place a wound token on an empty space in the guardian’s location.

If all the spaces in that location are now filled with wound tokens, the guardian’s ability for that location is disabled and the guardian player cannot use it.

If all the spaces on the guardian board (all the locations) are now filled with wound tokens, that means the guardian has been defeated and the hero player wins immediately.

    Hero Powers

Many heroes have special abilities that allow them to perform unique actions while fighting the guardian.

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

    Mount

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If you’re playing with a hero unit that has the MOUNT ability, something cool happens when they step into the guardian’s ground space. They get to take a free LEAP action right away. Pretty neat, huh?

    Dash

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

So, here’s the deal: when a hero unit has the DASH ability and decides to take a LEAP action, they have the option to attach themselves to any guardian location, which is pretty cool. Usually, you can only attach to a location that’s connected to where you are, but not when you’ve got that DASH ability. You can do this whether you’re leaping from the guardian’s ground space or from any other spot on the guardian.

    Fire

How to play Skulk Hollow Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Hey there! Let’s talk about a cool ability called FIRE and how it works with hero units.

So, when a hero with the FIRE ability is hanging out in a ground space next to the enemy guardian, they can do something awesome. They can take a MISSILE ATTACK action and BOOM – deal one wound to any part of the guardian. Pretty cool, huh?

    Oh, and check this out…

If you have a hero unit with the HURL ability, something cool happens when they’re in the guardian’s ground space. They can take a MISSILE ATTACK action to deal a wound to any part of the guardian. It’s like they’re throwing a missile at the guardian! How awesome is that?

But don’t worry if your hero unit doesn’t have the HURL ability. They can still attack the guardian and inflict wounds in different ways. There are many ways to be a hero, after all! Each hero unit brings its own unique abilities and strategies to the battle. So even without the HURL ability, your hero can still make a difference.

A hero who possesses the RECALL ability can spend one power to allow me, the hero player, to look at the cards in my discard pile. I can choose one card and put it back into my hand.

At the end of the game, it’s an instant victory for one player if they meet any of their win conditions!

Here are the win conditions for each player:

    – I, the hero player, win by defeating the guardian. The guardian is defeated once all the wounds on the guardian board are filled with wound tokens.

    – The guardian player wins by defeating my leader or fulfilling the unique win condition of their chosen guardian. My leader is defeated once all the wounds on their unit card are filled with wound tokens.

There are also player handicaps that can affect the game.

So, if you’re new to the game, you might feel like you’re not quite on the same level as those who have been playing for a while. It can be tough to compete against more experienced players. But don’t worry, there’s a way to even the playing field!

When you’re setting up the game, you have the option to give yourself up to six ancient relic tokens. These tokens are a powerful tool that can help you out during the game. You can spend a token to take an extra action on your turn. It’s like getting a bonus move!

Once you spend a token, it’s gone for the rest of the game. So, you’ll want to think strategically about when to use them. But don’t worry, you can always save them for a crucial moment. Just remember, the more tokens you spend, the fewer you’ll have left. Use them wisely!
