To start the game, put all the letter tiles in the pouch or mix them up face-down next to the board.
Next, each player will draw a tile to see who goes first. The player with the letter closest to “A” gets to start. If someone draws a blank tile, they automatically go first!
If both players draw the same letter, just draw again until someone gets a different letter. Then, put all the tiles back in the pouch and mix them up again.
When we play this game, each of us gets seven new letters. We put these letters on our racks.

Finally, we need to agree on which dictionary to use if there’s a challenge.
All words labeled as a specific part of speech (including foreign words, archaic words, obsolete words, colloquial words, slang words, and so on) are allowed. The only exceptions are words that are always capitalized, abbreviations, and standalone prefixes and suffixes. We also can’t use words that require a hyphen or an apostrophe.
How to Win
We need to form words on the gameboard using the letters on our racks. Each letter has a different value.
On the gameboard, there are special squares that can increase the value of a letter or a whole word. The player with the highest final score wins the game.
How to Play
When it’s my turn, I start by combining 2 or more of my letters to make a word. I can place this word on the board either across or down, as long as one of the letters is on the center square. I can’t make diagonal words, though.
Since I’m using a special “premium square,” the score for my first word is doubled. After I place my word, I count up the points and announce my score for that turn.
Once I’ve finished my turn, I draw new letters to replace the ones I used. I always need to have 7 letters on my rack, as long as there are enough tiles left.
Then it’s the next player’s turn to go, starting to the left of me.
Now, it’s each player’s turn to add one or more letters to the words that are already on the board, creating new words of their own.
When I play Scrabble, I have to make sure that all the letters I play on my turn are placed in one row either across or down the board. It’s important that they form at least one complete word. And here’s the tricky part – if my letters touch other letters in nearby rows, those letters have to form complete words too, like in a crossword puzzle. I get points for all the words I create or change during my turn.
So how can I make new words? Well, there are a few ways:
- I can add one or more letters to the letters already on the board.
- I can put a word at a right angle to a word already on the board. The new word has to use one of the letters already there, or add a letter to it.
- I can place a whole word parallel to a word that’s already been played, so that the letters next to it also form complete words.
Once I’ve played a tile and scored points for it, I can’t move it or replace it. That’s against the rules.
Blanks
Hey there! Let’s talk about how blank tiles work in the game. They’re pretty neat because you can use them as any letter you want. But don’t forget, if you play a blank tile, you have to say what letter it represents and it has to stay that way for the whole game.
Now, let’s move on to exchanging letters. If you want to change some or all of your letters, you can do that on your turn. Here’s how:
- Put the letters you want to get rid of face down.
- Take the same number of letters from the pouch.
- Put the letters you got rid of back into the pouch.
Just keep in mind, you can only exchange tiles if there are 7 or more tiles left in the game.
Alright, let’s talk about ending the game: The game comes to an end when one of two things happen: either all the letters have been drawn and a player uses their last letter, or if all possible plays have been made.
The Scoring System
I’m the scorekeeper and I’ll tell you how to keep score in Scrabble. After each turn, you should write down the score for each player on a scorepad or piece of paper. It’s important to keep track of each player’s score, so make sure to enter it after every turn. The value of each letter is shown by a number at the bottom of the tile. If a tile is blank, it’s worth zero points.
To calculate the score for each turn, you need to add up the values of the letters in each word that was formed or modified on that turn. You can also earn additional points by placing letters on premium squares.
There are two types of premium letter squares on the board. The blue square doubles the score of a letter placed on it, while the green square triples the letter score. These squares can really elevate your score if you use them wisely.

The game comes to an end when all the letters have been drawn and one of the players uses their last letter. Alternatively, the game can also end when all possible moves have been exhausted.
