Getting Ready

Alright, let’s set up the game. First, place the board right in the middle of the table. Now, each of us will draw a random Character card. Take a look at your card and place it in front of you. In a two-player game, we will only use three Character cards: Carpenter, Cook, and Explorer. So, if we’re playing with just the two of us, choose one of those three cards randomly. Any Character cards we don’t use, we’ll put back in the box. Now, look at your Character card. It shows a special Invention. Once everyone has assigned their pawns, we can start resolving the Actions. We will go through them in the following order, focusing only on the Actions that have pawns assigned to them:

1. Threat Action

First, let’s deal with the Threat Action. Take a look at the card and discard the required resources (if there are any). Then, follow the instructions on the card. After that, discard the card and collect any resources or Determination tokens that are shown on it.

If you happen to gain any resources from the Threat Action, you should put them in the Future Resources space. Remember, you can only access these resources once all the Actions have been resolved. If you receive any Determination tokens, you can use them right away by adding them to your own supply.

If my exploration was successful, I get to draw the top Island tile from the stack. I then place it face up in the space on the Island where I chose to explore during the planning phase.

I need to take a look at the terrain type on the tile I drew. If it matches any of the terrain types listed on Invention cards, I have to mark those cards with a black marker.

If there is a Beast card icon on the tile, I have to shuffle a Beast card into the Hunting deck. If there is a Mystery icon on the tile, I need to check what it means on the Scenario card.
